The big difference between what Josh does and QA is that he gets to pick what idiotic task he wants to spend ungodly hours on. And if he doesn't like it he can just abort and it'll never see the light of day. He also only needs to do it once, and no matter the outcome, that's it. He basically gets to go out with a sledgehammer and break stuff. In QA on the other hand you get a task to test something, then you have to document it & report your findings in detail, go back and test edge cases, and later re-test the whole thing to make sure it's fixed... Nowhere near the freedom and creativity he has with his content.

Having been introduced to Hydroneer through Josh's videos, I have so much more appreciation for his insane antics. That pile of dynamite at South Hope alone would've made me rage quit. Every time you want to put something down, you need space for the object. If you don't have space, it goes red and translucent, and your character makes this confused 'huh?' every single time. That sound will drive you insane if the dripping water doesn't get to you first. Just the knowledge that Josh put down that many barrels and managed to get them into a coherent pile will make even those most dedicated to the intended experience feel their soul wither a little bit.

with the fish cubes in the bucket, my guess is that that game probably attaches them to the bucket by looping through an array of everything in the bucket and saying "the bucket moved by this much in this frame, so also move everything in this array by that much one by one before advancing to the next frame". theres just so many damn items that it takes forever
@Krakenfall2 жыл бұрын
Yeah probably. Then everything in the bucket would continue to be rendered and get updated through nested calculations based on the location of the bucket. I bet there's a way to keep the texture of the cube on the bucket surface as a child of the bucket (have an array positions + texture id of contents in the bucket) and then unload the cube objects. Make little proxies inside the bucket and respawn them when removed. I wonder how they actually fixed it

@TwiliPaladin2 жыл бұрын
22:13 Putting an item in the bucket only makes it "part of the bucket" in the sense that the game will no longer do collision checks for that item. When the bucket moves, it still updates the location for all items in the bucket. That's why the frame rate got so much better once all the cubes were in the bucket, then died again once the bucket was moved.

Speculation on my part, but my guess on why the bucket is causing fps issues is just that there's So Many cubes that are inside the bucket, and the cubes each have their own bit of data for sell price, when the game "thinks" about the bucket while the player's holding it, it's also "thinking" about every single cube connected to it? Even though they may not be part of physics calculations, they're still, like. Actively being "processed" by way of the player holding them? But again, just speculation on my part.

I'm pretty sure they patched already, but as a software developer myself I would say the physics are likely disabled (20:00), because the framerate was much worse when way less cubes were moving towards him with the magnet than in the bucket, however, there is till the transform global vector of each cube probably being updated at every frame in there. If they could kill the instance and just add it to a map of the bucket's object, then it should get rid of that (of course, re-spawn if the cube turns)

Hey Krakenfall, you do play games sometimes? I suggest you try out Deep Rock Galactic. Basically you get sent out to a procedurally-generated cave system (which makes the game interesting) and you have to do a mission with your team. You’ll probably be most interested in the mission type “on-site refining” where you have to place pumpjacks and manually connect pipes. As engineer you have to place platforms for teammates, as gunner you can place permanent ziplines for everyone to use, as driller you have titanium drills to carve tunnels and dig faster. You have to fight off enemy waves/swarms while doing the mission objective. The game has some problem-solving that you might like, a great gameplay loop and the most friendly community (no toxics at all). Please, try the game out! It’s really good. . .

My guess for why the bucket of cubes lags is that the cubes are all still separate objects despite being tied to the bucket, and that every time the bucket moves, the transforms to position and angle of the bucket get applied to each cube individually.

View-based culling, I think is the rendering process you're looking for. Anyways, the bucket probably lags because, while the cubes aren't being individually moved, meaning not as much lag as with the staff, it still is moving them all. There is a difference between doing something because you want to and doing something because that is your job. If he is doing this he can just get up and walk away if he gets bored but if it is his job he _has to do it_ and can't just stop because he doesn't feel like going any farther. Likewise he spends hours and hours doing these things when in QA you find the glitch/unwanted interaction, figure out how to replicate it and report it and then that is job done, move on. Also he mostly does this to EA games which means he likely would not be allowed to make videos about breaking the fuck out of games he works QA for. A whole slew of "nope, don't want that" is basically why he doesn't want to do QA as a job. He does content creation instead which happens to provide free QA (or QA for the low-low price of a single copy of the game in the case of ones where hey ask him to play it). As it is it is a win-win.

22:07 the objects are still in the world. this is not a fake mesh on top simulating a billion cubes. the engine even if optimized to not render them still has to update the position of each one when the bucket moves.
@Krakenfall2 жыл бұрын
Yep. I was saying in another comment I was expecting the objects in the bucket to be proxies with texture coords stored on the bucket object. That way no scripts would run and the only calculation would be the position of the texture. I wonder what they actually did to solve it
@BleachWizz2 жыл бұрын
@@Krakenfall it could be. Even so the texture position on the global world needs to be recalculated. So it keeps the position of the cubes relative to the bucket, so it doesn't try to move them independently, but at the time anything bumps into that bucket, a million cubes will update. This problem kinda carry aways to other places like "oh but they don't need to calculate it again when it changes" but then you need to calculate it before sending to the GPU, because it HAS changed and you don't know where it is, because it's based on the bucket's position... The real only way to solve this is deleting the cubes, saving a number and replacing them with 1 visual object...
