Backbiting, known as ghibah in Islam, is the act of speaking ill of someone behind their back. The Qur'an and Hadith emphasize its severity, with Allah condemning this act as a grave sin. Allah says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12), "Do not backbite one another." The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also warned against it, stating that backbiting is like eating the flesh of your dead brother (Sahih Muslim). Backbiting harms both the speaker and the person being talked about. It leads to the spread of false information, division, and discord in the community. Muslims are advised to guard their tongues and speak only what is beneficial. Repentance is key for those who engage in this sin. In Islam, it is vital to maintain respect, kindness, and good character towards others, refraining from hurtful speech.
