Community - Culture - Character: They live in the brand, doesn't matter if that brand is selling bars, wheels or frames or selling t-shirts, what the brand gives back to the community is what matters and Back Bone gives alot, and for many, Back Bone is BMX. This is evolution, and personally I think it sounds radder for BMX, not being tied to inventory costs, small margins and a diminishing piece of the pie means more rad shit for us all to enjoy. Always Building.

I’ve been a huge fan of backbone bmx since the early 2000s, road tripping to Canberra to check the shop out, and ride ACT, Awesome to see where it’s been, to now where it’s going! Bmx does need more apparel, and most stores are overseas which makes it expensive to get here in Aus, Can’t wait to see what’s next for backbone! This is awesome!

An issue I'm constantly hearing over the past 2 years is that BMX pricing in Australia has gone through the roof. When we look at the price gouging investigation of Coles and Woolworths I often hear comments from people who feel Australian bike shops having raised their prices in a similar fashion; unfairly too high for the current market. Personally, I don't strongly agree with that and "all the bike shops in Australia are price gouging right now" comments I hear but when I see restocked items' prices make incredible leaps, I do have to question what is going on in the background. Sometimes it feels like someone is taking too much of this pie you speak of, Tyson.

Hey Kirk, I will give you one example here (which no one will talk about) but f**k it, people need to understand. Right now, on our site, you can buy an S&M CCR frame for $1100 AUD. We buy that frame for $900 AUD. Then add GST ($90) onto that. Then add shipping. Now take off $110 for the GST we have to pay for tax when we sell it. Now ship that frame to anywhere in the country for $19 (which if I was to send that to anywhere, it's going to be costing me ($40 - $120). We made more off S&M frames we sold them for $600 (12+ years ago), then what we do now selling them for $1100 or $1200. In reality, a S&M frame should be about $1500 to the customer + whatever the freight to the customer should actually cost. It used to be $3000 for a 40ft container to be shipped over from Taiwan to the distro. It's now somewhere in the neighbourhood of $20000. For one cubic meter of USA to Aus, shipping is up 10x as well. When you think about what that does to the cost of each item, it's pretty dramatic. Prices are unbearably low in BMX shops. Customers aren't willing to pay that much (and fair enough!), and so it's a race to the bottom scenario, to hold onto market share. I am not willing to play that game anymore. Price gouging might be a thing with billion dollar companies like Coles and Woolies, but for small businesses like BMX, it's the other way around. Hope that makes sense and gives you some clarity.

@@BackBoneBMXOfficial Very much appreciate this reply. While I do have a small understanding of how shipping container costs have risen and eaten up a lot of the profits that were once available in BMX, your average person buying a new bike doesn't know this and some feel are being blatantly ripped off. Chris Moeller and Brant Moore did a great interview about this subject not so long ago that I have favourited and often link to people who question the rising costs of BMX parts/bikes. Unfortunately, it often doesn't sway their mind. I sometimes assume this is because they didn't actually watch the interview and just stuck to their uneducated opinion. That aside, all the best moving forward with your apparel business!
