(Spoiler alert) Who knows how it went down for real but the character that was the boyfriend was a damned fool. Saw a bear print and said nothing. Didn’t bring the cell phone or a map or anything. Didn’t turn back upon seeing a recent kill. One thing after another. Forgot his axe and other things to boot knowing a bear was in the area. Just woefully unprepared. Anyone knows better. Anyone. Planking on the ground doesn’t work with black bear btw. Only brown and I wouldn’t do that. I’d bring a big ass shotgun and bear spray and wouldn’t sleep in a friggin tent ever. Just a cabin.

100% agree with everything you said, with the flat-out refusal of the map being the most egregious

It's called a Tent Burrito. MANY a hiker has been mailed to death while sleeping in a tent

Just watched this. Still shaking when the credits rolled. YIKES! That bear attack sequence was more horrifying than anything I’ve ever seen in any horror movie (and I’ve seen A LOT.).

Got twist on movie what if the guide the couple meet & ate fish with was tracking them & leaving food near their tent lure bear. He would be financially motivated trigger fear drum up business. He did replied male lead question, "What is cost?" Guide replied, "Don't know cost but can tell you what they pay me." Plus he demonstrated he willing break rules by fishing when it's against rules. Plus at end female happens find her way back canoe leading her to her car & tour guide with fresh ground paid clients.

As a naturalized citizen of the Nick Nation, I endorse the name change. I have actually seen Backcountry 3 times, with the last time being only a few weeks ago. I really liked this one too, and felt like the bear was handled really well, and in particular the brutality of the mauling. In the tent there are a lot of quick cuts that I felt were not as effective as the moment that we are left inside the tent with the girlfriend unable to see what exactly is happening, but can hear the effects of the mauling. I think letting viewers fill in the imagery of that event themselves based on the sounds of the attack was an excellent choice, because, unless they had the resources to create a Revenant level bear attack, any bad cgi or janky bear animatronics would have completely diminished the impact of the scene. Also the practical effects of the outcome of the mauling, were also really well done, and drove home the brutality of that attack. Anyway, that was a long-ass comment, sorry about that.

Don't apologize lol, I enjoyed reading it! I completely agree. I didn't want to get into it in the video, but the mauling was my favorite scene. As you mention, the lack of budget could've been a huge negative and tanked the movie in its most pivotal scene. But the creativity and what isn't shown actually becomes a major positive. The practical effects are absolutely brutal.

By the way, I found your review because most of the others were 10 minutes or longer, which I think is 5 or more minutes longer than necessary unless someone is overly ranting or giving away more than should be given, so I though I’d let you know in case there are more like me out there not looking to watch too much of a movie in the fucking review for it. Lol Keep up the solid, highly entertaining reviewing. I’ll be on the lookout for more.

Hey thanks for all the feedback, I really do appreciate it. I try to keep my reviews under 5 minutes and to keep footage that spoils the movie out when editing, so I'm glad to hear that's what people want. Did you check out the movie yet?

Exact same reason I chose this review too. 17+mins? Not a chance. 5 is just right. Well done goldilocks. Well. Done.

The movie is a beautiful slow burn but absolutely savage. Almost unwatchable during the attack scene. It’s so realistic. I also work outdoors (and at night) in Northern Alberta. I also happen to know someone who was on the scene when a woman was killed on a work site by a predatory black bear. Her entire crew of men (like 6 or 8 of them) couldn’t save her despite their best efforts for almost 2 hours. An entire fire fighter crew also came on the scene and hit the bear with a fucking water cannon. It wouldn’t back off this poor woman. I can only imagine what the people trying to save her witnessed and went through seeing that, let alone what she went through. Apparently there was improper storage of garbage and cigarette butts and coffee cups as well as not taking seriously enough the sightings and warnings signs in the area. This movie is based on that exact type of predatory black bear. It’s terrifying and not taken seriously enough. I thought the movie did a great job of highlighting all the errors people so easily and carelessly make as well as the reality and devastating seriousness of the attack. Great movie, just hard to watch at certain points.

Found this review REALLY entertaining. Even actually lol’d a few actual lol’s. Can’t say yet whether or not the review is true yet, but will comment after watching to share whether it lives up to its decent review or not. Don’t worry; I’m pretty fair and unbiased. If I just don’t like it for personal reasons I can disassociate my opinion vs what it would be if my mood or taste happens to differ from yours or not, so I won’t hold your opinion to my own unless the cinematography/writing/acting are part of said opinion. Either way, thanks for the giggles. Make more reviews like this and you’ve got yourself a decent career ahead of you sitting on your ass and eating popcorn. Cheers!

Take comfort in the fact as real as the bear attack and mauling looked and what an outstanding job they did at makings it as real and disturbing as possible, thay still screwed up the black bear’s behavior. 1: they don’t make grizzly roars and growls 2: they are actually extremely quiet, especially when stalking you. So if it happened in real life just like that, Alex wouldn’t have even noticed the bear stalking their tent if he hadn’t unzipped it and looked out. They wouldn’t have noticed it until it was already by the tent nosing around. 3: the attack itself would have also been silent, save for the couple’s screaming.

Interesting! I honestly know nothing about bears, so all that info is fascinating. I guess they took some creative liberties to make the story work

@@HorrorFlickswithNick yeah, they’re all different too, just like any animal. They got different personalities and attitudes, but when it comes down to it, in general they’re just shy. I’ve been around a lot of them and they mostly just bolt if they see me. Doesn’t mean I trust any of them around a child, a pet or livestock, because once they get easy pickings, they don’t stop. All in all, fascinating creatures. They’re my favorite forest animal.

Backcountry definitely made me more scared of bears than I was, having grown up in a town where it's probable to just run into them on a back street. The Bear scene itself was amazing, but I didn't enjoy any of the rest of it like you did, from the pacing to characters. I did a review of my own on the movie, if you want to check it out, but it's always interesting seeing how different people feel about movies :)

If you want a good bear movie watch The Edge, The bear in that movie is an actual real bear in the movie, he’s a tame bear in real life but in the movie he plays a wild bear.

Hey Nick, are you sure that all the stock footage for this video was obtained legally? What about that clip from the office? Seriously asking. I've noticed you don't have "educational" or "satire" in your tags, so I've reported you're video already just to be certain.
