Flying in Alaska continues to stun at every turn, but we finally experience it up close via an awesome bush runway to explore an abandoned mine, and end up shooting an unexpected circling approach to minimums at 4am.

Enjoying this series. Lived 5 yrs in Sitka. It's where the ceremonial transfer of sovereignty of Alaska from Russia to the USA occurred on Oct 18, 1867 (Alaska Day). Hope you got to tour the town a bit.

4:51: No, I do not need to imagine growing up with all of this, because I actually did. I have many fond memories flying with my dad in and round Anchorage, Homer, and Seldovia when I was young. It inspired me to get my pilot's license. However, after 18 years of flying, I have yet to make the trip back to the Last Frontier in my own plane. For years, I've been saying, "Maybe next year." This series is making it difficult for me to say that again. Thank you for sharing. I am also looking forward to seeing your trip to Grand Cayman, but I suppose that will be in your next "Season" (so to speak.)

The river is the Copper River, great, world class salmon. The mine was the Kennecott Copper Mine. Athabaskans hunted here for decades. In the '70's, when I lived just west of there, between Chitina and Kenny Lake, it was a ghost town. Good to see life again.

I don't want to be "that" guy but when I was training for my private the instructor would pull my throttle and ask "where are you going to land?". I know you don't always have a choice but when you're sight seeing I just couldn't think "where are you going to land?". Having said that, great video and I don't question your skills as a pilot so I would be interested in your response. Thanks and keep on flying.

Yeah, pretty casual approach to the safety of his passengers. Stupid, in fact. Survival in ice-laden water up there is about 3-5 minutes, if you get out of the plane. I hope you discuss these factors with your passengers so they have a say in these antics.
