Of course you can use a metal spatula. The sooner you scar up the bottom of the pan, the worse it starts sticking, and the faster you have to replace the pan. ;-)

Do you bring another pan with you or is the fry bake what you use to boil water as well?

Depends. But the Alpine Deep is plenty big to just boil water too. That's what I typically do.
