I had friends laugh at me saying I was carrying too much on a day hike until one borrowed a layer because they were chilly, took care of blisters on another and filtered water for one who ran out. They now get it and beefed up their day kit.

I’ve been hiking a lot this season in the Wasatch mountains in Utah…shocked how many “hikers” I see, literally on every hike, that don’t even have water. A pregnant women last week with her partner- no water, simple pack , or hiking shoes. Great video!
@BackcountryExposure11 ай бұрын
Yes, I think that has a lot to do with the close access to so many trails, five minutes from home. Easy to get out, and not know what should be taken with. Likely cause they don't own any of the gear.

Gear videos are always great. It’s always good to take account of what you’ve got, what you may not ever use, what might be better to use etc.

Thanks to you I have a Waymark EMBR and a WM Ultralite bag. Love them both. Great tips on the day items. I bring an emergency bivy because I once found a hiker soaked to the bone and shivering on a rock. Your entire family seem like great people. Rock on, Devin!

Great video!!! I love my day hikes and always prepare for the unexpected changes. I always add my Dyneema tarp and headlamp for the event of something going sideways and getting stuck out in weather or overnight.

Awesome hike with your wife. I love that trail. Such a beautiful area. Looks like the early snow is staying in the area too. Nice packing job and gear selections. Keep it up and you might start having a heavy pack like me. LOL. Cool video. Glad you got to hike on eclipse day. Take care.

Nice video - I think #1 could have been some form of communication. If it's a smart phone, confirm you'll have reception. If its a Satellite system like your ZOLEO confirm it's active and fully charged. FYI, I carried a ZOLEO on my AT Thru Hike this year and it was terrible so I sold it as soon as I got home.

We saw a total eclipse a few years back. Very cool/weird experience. It was like twilight then dark for a few minutes, but no long shadows. All the birds got quiet, and the crickets started chirping. My dog curled up and laid down. Then the sun was back out.

Great list. I always carry a bandana as a handkerchief, a family sized first aid kit, a small Swiss Army knife and an extra pair of gloves especially in the cooler months. I try to carry and cover the ten essentials list on every hike. And of course extra snacks!

Food, water filter, at least a fleece along with a tarp tent, headlamp. Lots of things can happen if you are out for “just” a day hike under prepared. I see people with just a water bottle and cringe
@WolfPackM98c11 ай бұрын
@@techguy9023Ironically, the people out there with just the essentials are probably more experienced. You really don’t need all that unless you’re the type to carry a bug out bag to drive to the grocery store
@BackcountryExposure11 ай бұрын
@@techguy9023a lot of people either don’t know any different, or are just choosing to carry less. This mountain we were on is notorious for a lot of rescues from people being unprepared. A lot of people just get “lucky” carrying little to no proper gear.

I love your videos. I was wondering what the best resource is to find overnight hikes for beginners so I could do a gear shakedown. Want to start overnight backpacking. I am in Southern Utah but would love to also do some Uintah Mountan hiking and camping also. It’s hard to find local overnight hikes in my opinion because you don’t know if camping is allowed
