Honestly, each one is going to have their own strengths and weaknesses. I like that Caltopo has a lot of the legacy map layers which helps with some of the planning aspects. So those are nice to reference. The organization and route building within OnX is currently my favorite though. It's also nice that when you download your offline map, all the layers are downloaded with it.

Right now the only big difference is the elite gives the private lands layer info. I would expect that as they continue to develop features, more features will be added to the Elite option.

What is are the main benefits of OnX over AllTrails? Is it mainly just interface or are there specific features that AllTrails doesn't offer.

I switched to OnX because the distances on AllTrails can often be quite inaccurate. We planned a 4 day backpacking trip that according to AllTrails, should have been 42 miles. According to our Garmin GPS, the actual distance was 53 miles. That's a MASIVE difference! I'll never use AllTrails again.

​@@Chris.Young. did you map the trail manually yourself on AllTrails (instead of just going off the reported mileage on the AllTrails trail listing)? and when you mapped it on OnX, was it actually more accurate than AllTrails? You also can't compare mapped data to your tracked data because GPS tracked data has a lot more noise..

the route planner is litteral trash and it keeps trying assume the way i want instead of following the line im telling it to do trying to make a long circle and once it gets to a closer than half on that circle it jumps by its self to the shorter way of that half circle and its annoying so i have to make 2 route to get ONE route that I WANT......

I only purchased because on sale. I would not renew. As a backpacker knowing if there are water sources is so important. I can’t find anything on those on the maps. Useless in that regard and to me that’s important.

Nice thorough walk through and tutorial Devin! I did something similar with All Trails in a future Gearhaulics ep. These tools are super important and spending as much time as you can to familiarize yourself with them could mean the difference between a flawless trip and a sketchy one.

Wow, really cool tool. I admit I still mostly use maps and guide books haha. Does it work well on an ipad? I unfortunately don’t have a computer. I’m definitely going to have to look into it. Great tutorial!

Ha! Me too! Except I like to take the guide book info an put it into the map as a waypoint, etc. It runs nice on an iPad. Its the mobile interface, but does well. They just launched the route building tool on the mobile app though!

Is there a simple way to determine how much longer you have on a particular trail? For instance, say I'm 7 miles into a trail and I want to know how long until I'm finished. Will onX tell me I have 3.2 miles left?
