For the D5200 users out there: 1) Not available for this model, 2) Not available for this model, but after hitting play button and some zoom, one can press i button and use < and > buttons to loop through to detected faces positions and check focus 3) Mine already skip thru photos using command dial by default 4) Not available for this model, but one can assign this function to "my menu" to speed it up a little 5) Not available for this model. I wish I could use the built in flash button for that. 6) Not available for this model, but the Fn button can be used for ISO ( very handy) 7) Not available for this model, but one can use Center/Ok button to center the single focus point

I am a recent convert from the Canon 70D to the Nikon D500. No regrets because the sensor is so much better in low light and the frame rate is better for birds in flight. I do find the Nikon menus hellish complicated (and don't understand why Nikon Banks can't be locked) and so short cuts like these from Steve are incredibly helpful.

Hi Steve Just had an awkward moment over the weekend photographing Hen Harriers. My D500 suddenly froze with no back screen and the top screen. Only showing the ISO speed... tried everything but couldn’t change the shutter speed nor the f-stop and couldn’t change anything, yet the camera would shoot no problem. I though my camera was wrecked... 😱 BUT I checked my camera over and the ISO button was stuck with what must have been a piece of grit... believe I tried everything and though my camera was destined for repair... but I saw that the ISO button was a little depressed... upon freeing it via a very fine needle it released the button and all was back to normal. Hope this could help other followers... the relief was incredible 👍

Very practical tips! I actually had literally everything setup exactly like these. It's an huge time saver indeed, and makes working with my D750 a snap, it's really ergonomic. Tip 8 (for portrait shooters): set the spot meter hotkey to the Fn button. It's a really big help if you want perfectly exposed skin.

One of the quickest ways that NIKON shooters can make CANON shooters jealous is, without hitting the "play" button, zooming in to 100% on the image you just captured, AND THEN SCROLLING BETWEEN OTHER PHOTOS. For whatever reason, Canon continues to disallow this, assuming that you'd rather change your camera settings while reviewing images, lol. Fail! That thumb dial on Canons is nice for really blazing through images, though, but I honestly don't do high-speed image scrolling often enough to want to use my command dials for image scrolling. But, while we're on the subject of making Canon shooters jealous, the one thing not mentioned here that is HUGE for me as a wedding / portrait shooter is, of course, face detection during image playback. If anybody has ever noticed the little white boxes over people's faces when zooming in to a waist-up portrait, try spinning the sub-command (usually the front) dial while zoomed in to 100%. It will automatically scroll from face to face to face! Using this, I've been able to blaze through massive numbers of group photos during a cocktail hour or reception, and ensure ZERO blinking or OOF shots even for over 300 people in a row! :-)

Well every single canon camera has image review button right under either right or left thumb. That depends on whether the camera is flippy or not. What you mean by rather changing camera settings than reviewing images? Nikon has menu button at the ideal position for review button, Canon does it right.

+Bob Barr that is fine if you are using a small light lens and can use your left hand to press the ISO button on the rear of the camera but if you are hand holding a big heavy lens like a 200-500mm you are then unable to let go of the lens with your left hand to adjust ISO. With a D7100 the only way I've found around this is to shoot in manual mode and auto iso, then I can effectively adjust ISO by altering shutter speed or aperture.

Thank you very much I've learned something new #7 But for function where I already have a designated button, I would (nearly) never waste my precious few configurable buttons. On the Z6 I use the Movie-Record Button for accessing my "My-Menu" where I have easy Access to function (I am not setting on the menu), like ISO-config, Format (Tipp #4 not working), FX/DX-mode, viewfinder brightnes, Face-Eye-animal-focus, Lock-on-time, etc. Where I "waste" a configurable Button is Fn1 on Playback, because the Play-Back-Button is really bad to access, if you have the eye on the viewfinder, to review photos. best regards, Roman

Awsome tips, I've recently changed from cannon to nikon and I was really missing some of these functions. So pleased to be able to implement them so easily through the custom settings. You're a life saver!

I enjoy your tutorials and your presentation. You catch my attention when I’m watching/ listening to you. So not only do you offer good photography skills/knowledge, you have a good voice, and skillful presentation, people can retain. While there are many other photographers who offer tutorial videos on KZbin, some teach the right stuff, but they just don’t have the “presentation or voice skills we want to hear, therefore tuning them out.

The explanation for #7, storing AF points by orientation, was very useful. I hadn't understood that one before but now I'm using it. I'd also like to use #5, temporarily disabling flash, but I already use the customizable external buttons for other functions. I wish my D750 had more of them.

Thank you so much. It was very useful. I am a wedding photographer from India and Indian weddings are too fast to adjust your AF points. The trick with the af point is very handy. My Nikon D850 just got better in a way.

Coolest way to scroll through photos on the Nikon touch screens is by touching the very bottom of the image when viewing captures and moving the bar that appears left and right. It's a SUPER quick way to locate photos without zooming out to the tile view.

Also - on the multi-select center button 100% zoom (which is awesome) - by default on the D700 that is 8 clicks up using the magnifier button), you need to walk those nearby menus and choose the one that says "Medium" to get the 100% effect. (the High takes you up all 8 (which are well beyond 100% and useless in my opinion), and "Low" does less...

ordered a d500 specifically for birds in flight with 300pf plus tc 14III and 500pf ( on PREorder) . upgrading from d300 😁 which served me well and i accidentally shattered the top lcd screen. d500 with lenses are reportedly better with autofocus being my number 1 priority, portability being 2nd and i am willing to accept mild trade off to image quality if any. loving your videos and also the ebooks i just purchased :)
