When bore sighting make the side edge of the target split the bore in half. White paper on one side dark background on the other. Adjust the windage to the same edge. Then split the white paper and darker background across the barrel. Then adjust the elevation to the same edge. It's a LOT easier to see the edges of the target through the barrel than it is the center of the target.

A lot of people don't seem to take into consideration or even understand how high the scope is above the bore will effect trajectory. Bore sight in the house after mounting your scope. Measure the height of scope over bore and set your reticle that much above the center of bore on a wall in your house and you will be on paper at the range.

Yep, he kinds talked around it without really getting to the point of heights of scope vs bore axis. It matters! Sadly, it is possible because the understanding of the importance and it's implications is beyond the"Scope" of most average hunting shooters. (Sorry for the Pun). Ever try to explain that a bullet does not rise leaving the bore to some shooters, it is the inclination of the boree to the line of site of the scope. Some cannot get it no matter how hard you try to explain physics to them. GRRRR!!!! KnifeMaker

I like Who Tee Who's method . use a laser sight at 10yrds. put the laser on target and adjust the scope to a dot that is the scope height. center of barrel, of course cross hairs. you are on paper before pulling the trigger. I use that method when I mount a scope in my basement.

Good video, I run the same basic process with some the exceptions. Some base/ring combinations on hunting rifles (such as Conetrol) have adjustable windage in the base. I mechanically center the reticle within the optic. Then, corrective windage adjustments can be made thru the bases to achieve zero.

I got a bore sight, it's a mini target that sticks into the barrel and has a target on it, you dial the scope to where you want on there and it works pretty well. It's not really ideal though since you're sticking a piece of metal in the barrel, but it hasn't ever hurt my guns that I can tell.

That shot count/multi-target method of determining zero is needlessly complicated. Shoot all the rounds (minimum of 10) at the same point of aim. Find the center of that group, and make your final adjustments based on the center of that group. It seems like more rounds up front, but saves you rounds on the back end.

I personally like to run 4 x5 shot groups with the same point of aim for all (once I’m close to my zero) and then overlay those shots using x,y measurements. This will then give me a solid mean radius. I’ll make my final adjustment on the turret and I’m golden. So long as I only use that ammo of course.

Paper is cheap. Ammo expensive. Simply use a huge target paper (or several small next to eachother). Bore sight the middle, shoot and adjust. And regarding bore sighters: Put it in and rotate it. They are rarely perfectly centered so put the crosshairs in the middle of that "circle" of light.

At the time I checked this there were 22 replies with some subs. After reading thru them it became obvious to me that no one had ever been in the military on range day. ●Sight in at 25 meters or about 27 yards. You're done. ●Another forgotten method from 60+ years ago is to divide the velocity of your ammo in fps by 100 and set the target at that range in yards. Ex. At 2925 fps, the target would be set at 29 yards. Zero the rifle at that range, and you're good to go for up to 7.5 times the sight-in distance, or 217 yards to be dead on again. At 260 yards you'll still be in the 6" kill zone of a deer and at 290 yards you'll still be in the 8" kill zone of an elk. ●Iron sight shooters take note: the nice thing about the two preceeding methods is that the average person can see the bullet holes in the target with the naked eye.

I have a system I like to use for my “go to” rifle and load. A range at home makes this easier but if you do and want the ultimate sight in here it is. Pick your load and buy or load at least 20 rounds. Shoot that rifle cold bore and only once per session, over the period of a season that has a wide range of temps and humidity and pressure. I like a led sled to take me out of the equation for some of the shots , as we are testing to see what the gun can and will do under any conditions we may shoot at game. But you also have to mix in some “hunting field rests” like a pack or shooting sticks. October works well for me as in that month we can have temps in the 90’s and snow. I shoot at the same printed targets each time, although I may use a few different ones. Then once I have covered all the environmental conditions I can get in that 20 rounds, and if I plan on hunting with or without a bipod I will mix that in, when done I have a good picture of what group my gun can give me through a hunting season. With the all important first shot. Doing this test will shock you! 1/2 MOA guns can be 3 MOA guns in this test. If you get one that can give 1.5 MOA or less you have a fine rifle don’t let go of it! But that’s the only test I have found that tells me if the rifle is first shot ready for hunting season. And it can rearrange your ideas of what rifles you have in order or accuracy! A gun that needs 3 fouling shots then settles in to a half MOA rifle is not a half MOA hunting rifle! And as a reloaded it makes you realize why temp stability in powders is something the industry is embracing. Or explain that rifle that was sighted in a couple months ago, and must have “gotten bumped off zero” by hunting season! It can also show the load that shoots best in one range session may not be the best load for hunting in a season of variable weather conditions. This test may show you some of your rifles are better than you think, and some are worse!

I use a $10 dollar 4x Tasco air rifle scope with the crosshairs centered to bore sight the rifle. It gets the first shot REALLY REALLY close at 100 yards. Don't have to waste time with shorter distances. It fits neatly inside the action after I remove the bolt. It gives a very clear image of the target through the inside of the barrel, and I can dial my mounted scope to line up almost perfectly. Takes like 2 mins tops. You can bore sight the rifle anywhere, then head to the range and fire your shots. You can even bore sight on a light bulb at 100 yards at night then head to the range the next day.

Or you could do similar to what the first guy said and sight in for 2.5 or 2.75 inches high at 100 yards. That's the hunting point blank zero. Out to 300, maybe 325 depending in caliber, you can hold in the center of the heart/lung area and get a double lung hit. No need to mess with the turrets.

There’s a trick to shooting very accurately if you’re using the MPBR method past your MPBR……and it’s so soooo often overlooked and massively underrated. It’s fast, efficient and requires nothing electronic other than a range finder!! You do however need a scope with some decent references on its reticle. It doesn’t matter if your using a FFP or SFP either, but if you’re using SFP you’ll want to have it set at max power when shooting past your MPBR for the references (super simple, just crank her round as far as she’ll go, you don’t even need to look!!) You simply set you rig up to shoot your desired MPBR. Now let’s say your MPBR is 250m, and you want to be able to take fast accurate shots on roughly 4” targets out to 400m….you simply set out a paper target at 300, 350 and 400m, shoot a couple groups at each distance, and note where those shots land in relation to your reticle (obviously if using a SFP you have to do this at max power to make it fast and efficient for when you’re actually out hunting). You can make a drawing of your reticle on paper and draw on where your groups have landed at respective distances so you can easily memorise them. Because you now have that data on a drawing you can memorise them wherever you want, a quick glance at it while doing the dishes, watching tv, whatever. It sounds a bit long winded but in reality it really isn’t, and it’s so sooo worth the little bit of effort. I shoot a huge amount of red foxes here in the uk using nightvision attached to the back of my day scope and even shooting at a relatively small target like a fox (4” kill zone absolute max) it’s unbelievably accurate, and more importantly, especially on a skittish animal that’s often constantly moving until you stop it, it’s fast. Super fast, and especially when shots present themselves quickly and you don’t have time or even light, to be faffing and fiddling with turrets, it’s deadly! Good stuff with the channel Jim, always enjoy it from the other side of the water! 👌🏻👍🏻

So if I understand this correctly, in calculating the points it is only one point whether it is high or low, left or right no matter how far off it may be (say, 4 inches high). Correct? Then, when applying the scope adjustment, it is only adjusted one click (i.e., 1/4 MOA) per the final point average, elevation or windage?

I was hoping Jim would reply and clarify his technique. It seems a point should added for every 1/4 moa deviation up or down, not just one point. Being 1.5 inches from the POA is 6 clicks.

What is your aimpoint at 50 yds? DEAD on bullseye at 50?

I want to see you shoot that same gun that you have in this video and shoot it at 010 or 20° when it's freaking cold out without adjusting anything!

Good info.. I’ve always used the party trick method but it can be pain if you move the gun when making the scope adjustments..

What about BDC scopes, you didn't give an option on using those. When hunting I would argue that is the quickest way

If you are hunting in the hills, you need to sight in for the angle you plan to hunt. Holding under on a moving target with a scope is difficult the steeper the angle.

Ummm, no. Sight in normally and adjust for angle in your ballistic solution for each individual shot. Most range finders have angle compensation modes that automatically give you the corrected distance.

@@SammyMoore-tg5gs How long does it take to adjust for a MOVING target? Most of the time, you just watch the deer run past! This isn't an ego trip.

@@kensmith8832 and what you’re saying doesn’t make sense. I hunt in the mountains. Sometimes my shots are steep downward angles, sometimes they’re steep upward angles, and sometimes they are cross canyon shots that are at the same relative elevation. What “angle” should I sight my rifle in for? If an animal is moving slowly but is within 100 yds, angle compensation doesn’t matter, and I’d probably take the shot. If it’s moving quickly, I’m not shooting.

@@SammyMoore-tg5gs You are assuming I am talking about your world. I have hunted in the mountains for the last 40 years. When I shoot down off a cliff, my range is further than 200 yards and the animal is making tracks, meaning near full speed. Have you ever had to dealing with a bear charging your location? If you don't sight in before the hunt, you don't have time to dial in. If you are hunting at 100 yards, you don't need a rifle or scope, as a hand gun is best fitted for that range.

I have that same gun. I plan on exclusively range shooting with it. What are your thoughts of dropping it into an MDT chassis? I'd really appreciate your opinion!
