Hi Mel! Lol, Thanks for packaging my books so creatively, I can’t wait to get them! I don’t mind sending you extra for the postage. I love cookbooks and am always on the hunt for new to me titles for my canning shelf. I can totally relate to feeling like not doing anything, I was so busy stocking my vintage booths in December, that January has zipped by and I’ve only been to restock twice. But I’ve still got stock to research, tag & price and haven’t felt like doing it. Everything eventually gets done, sometimes it just takes a while.

We do a rolling stocktake. One box or shelf a day. We haven't lost any items since we started doing it. And you catch the "unlisted" items quicker and get them back for sale. It would be such a big job to do it all at once. Once you're on top of it, it's easy to do one shelf a day.

I'm concerned that the more new inventory you're adding, the more buried the lost and unlisted books (the ones taking up space that you dont know aren't currently listed) are getting. I feel like time blocking is essential to get things running efficiently because the cha-ching has the squirrel effect of getting you picking and packing. Turn the sound off and stock take for a couple of hours, do listings and admin for an hour or two, then print labels for new orders and pack, etc. A plan for blocks of time to focus on will help calm the frantic energy.
@backfromburnoutКүн бұрын
@@donnathomson_au new inventory is going onto new shelves so is separate from the already listed items. It’s just finding enough time blocks to work on everything.
@gaylepuou72142 күн бұрын
I think you should consider inventory now and not wait till you have time next week. You'll always have orders coming in. I'd start with the office and get started with the back end. See if you hire someone temporarily. Maybe your sister or mom can help and of course get paid to help. Its exciting!
@nancywilbur34632 күн бұрын
I was thinking a temporary worker also just for the inventory job. That person would just focus on one thing, and not be continually distracted by orders and posting, etc.

New SKU System: I thought, when you explained the new SKU plan (in an earlier video) that I understood it, but today you said the new system would be 3 shelves per letter, to eliminate the double numbers, but what you said at minute mark 7:50 left me confused when you mentioned each group of 3 shelves would get a single letter. That implied that rows 6 shelves wide would get two letters each. What i'd suggest, to perhaps keep the system simpler and able to more easily expand, is to give each row (regardless of length) a single letter, starting in the back where the office limited you to currently have 4 rows with only 3 shelves long. Then keep to the single letter per row idea out in the main area where you have rows 6 shelves wide. I suggest it for a couple reasons. At the end of each row (3 or 6 shelves long) you put a single letter starting with A nearest the back of the building. The other side of A would be B, since they are back to back. Then across the aisle you would have rows C & D. (again, back to back) Then the first row of 6 would be letters E & F, then G & H etc. That way you use even fewer letters and don't split any row in the middle with a second letter. You then number the shelves from 1 to 5, from the top down (as you already do) and start at the end of the shelves that are hard up against the side wall. In the back, where they are 3 shelves wide you would have numbers 1-15. Where you have a 6 shelf row you would have 1-30, with number 30 being out by your computer and packing bench. This also allows for easy expansion. If you decide to put a 4th shelf in any of the rows that are currently 3 shelves long, you make them A and B 16-20. Even if you put a 7th shelf across the end, turned sideways to cover the end of Row A and B (rather then 2 more in line) it simply gets the next available numbers and keeps the same convention going. Out by your sorting area, once the cages are gone, if you decide to add more rows and want to keep the number of in those to 3, 4 or 5 shelves, you just give them the next letters and use as many numbers as you need for the shelves you add in. But you keep using one letter per row, rather then two letters, because it's simpler having Row A, B, C regardless of the number of shelves currently in the length. Redoing the entire SKU system is a big task, so whichever new plan you go with, think about expansion and simplicity now, so you only have to do the task once.😉
@chris_sharp18Күн бұрын
If you’re changing your SKU system I would go to purely numerical, shelf number 1-150 for example, rather than a mix of letters and numbers which get you confused. You also definitely need a pick list when picking and packing orders! You could probably do with putting the store in time away mode for a week to fully do a stock take too…

1) True, one of the most stressful is selling something then you cannot find it amongst your pile! since it's an old item. This is what we learned the hard way in the beginning: don't mix new and old items and death pile items; in error of course. We would go sourcing each day and would not always list everything that day; then the piles got bigger and bigger. What a mess. We didn't have a massive inventory as you do but 400 mixed items and clothing were more than enough to cause stress. We put our account on vacation, then went through each and every item, to ensure all were listed and did not shop for a few months until we sold a good bunch of those items. 2) You should get those sting things to keep your glasses around you neck. 3) How are your books organized? topic, purchase date?

Sometimes I do lol. But I do also get lots of tips and ideas from viewers that I would never have thought of and many I have implemented and it’s helped my business :)

Correct, ink is EXPENSIVE. This is one of the reasons I get annoyed when international buyers ask if there’s a cheaper postage option. Yes, how about you swim here and pick it up?😂 I have 3 printers in a cabinet in the hallway. Much neater than having all 3 on a bench like I used to.

Do you pay the postage? A 2kg package in Canada costs $17 to send. I can't imagine something that heavy.
@202kittykat2 күн бұрын
Depends how big the parcel is we have flat rates upto 5 kgs could be 10.95 could’ve 18.95 less the aust post business discount (mine is way smaller than Mel’s) and that’s just within Australia
@backfromburnout2 күн бұрын
We get discounts the more we send. I work my postage costs out by an average. I add my monthly postage costs up and then divide it by the amount of orders I had that month. Many of my orders are multi orders so they help to reduce postage costs.

Inventory sucks (stock take), no one wants to do it. Treat it like eating an elephant a little bit at a time . Every day when you come in, knock out section or two . First job you do. Get it over with. Think about it overtime - if you do two shelves a day four days a week. Multiply that out over a month and think of how much you’ll have done.

You are doing amazing but you should hire a helper to help do your inventory and get the books sorted best money spent

Look up the Prayer of Saint Anthony. Saint of lost items. Works everytime for us!! Not religious at all but I think letting the universe guide you seems to work.
