BACKHAND SERVE tutorial - Same motion, Different SPIN

Welcome back to Rational Table Tennis Analysis. In this video we’ll focus on how to do the backhand serve. Nowadays various variations of the forehand pendulum serve dominate at the higher levels. However, there are advantages to the backhand serve. It’s often easier to control the height, allowing you to serve very low to the net. It’s a quicker motion, which can confuse some opponents. Because it’s less often used, opponents aren’t as used to it. Another great advantage is that you can see your opponent more easily as you are serving, some players can change their serve in mid-motion based on what their opponent is doing during the serve.

Very informative in practice. However, in a sequel to this video could you demonstrate how the opponent should counter these types of various services and come out a winner, as the Server usually has a slight edge in scoring.

I like the one where you touch on the side of the ball instead of behind it, like how Darko Jorgić does it. Video demonstration on my channel with the title "11 02 23 backhand serve variations", alltho I do put the ball too high in some of the examples.

Great video, you have to toss the ball a bit higher otherwhise it could be counted as illegal. The ball has to be tossed at least 16 cm high as far as I know.

I have a really hard time returning this serve, particularly the long variations to my backhand side (float, backspin, sidespin topspin or sidespin backspin). I feel like that pushing is very difficult when it long and sometimes the ball bounces at various heights, catching me off guard (sometimes high with no spin at a very awkward spot). My loop ends up feeling very inconsistent, as the ball is also very fast. Because I play penhold RPB, chopping is also not possible. Do you have any tips for returning this? I would rather not anticipate and switch to my forehand as I feel it is important to learn how to deal with it with my backhand.
