One of the best uses of modern cameras, taking video so you know how it goes back together. Before digital cameras etc a friend used a polaroid camera to take snaps before he dismantled.

Emma, your lathe looks to be in very nice condition particularly the compound cross and top slides, I might just add that I wouldn't worry about the backlash that you have now as long as you go past the previous cut to make a new cut and that little backlash has been taken up, so that compound in my opinion is ideally setup now and in much better shape than it was, cnc with ball-screws is a situation where backlash is most important, I love the quality and designing features of the old stuff such as the double nut on the cross slide to adjust for thread wear is so simple and easy to set, hope you don't mind my comments, liked the video very much Edmund......Alberta

Hi Emma. All lathes with screws and nuts have a tiny bit of backlash. If there is no backlash at all it is probably too tight and will wear pretty rapidly. The gib adjusters only need to have a lock on the centre one so the two outers keep your adjustment where it should be and you only need to adjust the one after using it as a lock. It would be a good idea to cross drill the oilers if possible and plug the top holes. Thanks for sharing. regards from the UK. Gary

Backlash is really lathe dependent. That Lorch arrangement is very elegant, ball bearings even. If you needed a thicker shim, maybe consider a Teflon washer.

Very interesting to see what goes on inside, I've just been going through a similar process with my Schaublin. I had a drawring to work from, but it was for a slightly different model, so when I opened it up I was met by a flying spring and a shower of loose ball bearings, that I wasn't expecting. I'm betting there will be someone out there who will appreciate a preview of what they should find inside their Lorch. Keep up the good work.

After having rebuilt/reconditioned several machines I learned that you should not eliminate all backlash unless you have ballscrews. The backlash in ball thrust bearings should be zero so long as they turn freely. You should strive for a small amount in the thread that you can feel and account for but that won't affect counting or tool movements like threading pull out. If there is room, maybe put a ring of felt or foam between the halves of the cross feed nut then just tighten adj screw until it touches and tighten the lockscrews. This will help with lubrication, too. I always fill open oil holes with felt, leaving a small space at the top to fill. It keeps the dirt out and holds oil for continued lubrication. Somewhere around here is a box with Polaroids of machines as they were disassembled. Later replaced with digital. Best way to not have extra parts. Mike (o\!/o)

Hi very nice lathe, originally the compound topslide would of had a four way tool post holder on it and that's what the four holes would have been for, according to some pictures I have seen on the net. Isn't backlash a bitch, I think we all suffer from that one have you thought of turning a new compound lead screw rather than modding the original just in case. How much accuracy are you looking for ?

Emma that Compund looks like it had three grubscrews pressing on the gibs like my chinese beastie the middle one in mine has a capscrew and a nut to lock it and that should be the only one involved in locking the compound... Jim

With this type of movement you have to accept backlash. You just need to be familiar with it and it wont be a problem. My bridgeport has backlash but it also has a DRO so its not an issue.
