I do hope that the farmers stand firm because I can almost guarantee that the big supermarkets will be monitoring the ‘sign-up’s’ to the website and any farmers that they recognise as a supplier will be threatened with sales reductions or, more likely, cancellations. It’s a well known methodology of the big supermarkets.

I agree with Richard. I also only eat one meal a day but that meal is made up of really good quality organic ingredients and because it is good quality you don't need so much of it. It works out cheaper to buy a weeks food than buying enough rubbishy chemically manufactured food to cover 3 meals a day for a week! I like this Food Hub initiative. I rarely go to supermarkets. A lot of farmers offer online delivery services, so I usually buy my meat & fish monthly. I get my veg from local farm stalls or markets. Cook everything from scratch. I have always said that the reason that there is so much Bowel & Stomach cancer is down to the chemical/packet foods sold in supermarkets. These diseases weren't hardly heard of decades ago.

I think it will need a period of readjustment for both us the public and the farmers, We both need to move away from the convenience of supermarkets. I'm not a farmer, but I would imagine that if you can secure a contract to supply all of what you produce to one of the big supermarket chains then it gives a certain level of security (albeit at a cost as to the price you get) and for sure supermarkets can be very convenient to shop at, free parking, get everything, you need under one roof and not just food, but drink, electrical goods, mobile phone deals, bedding, prescriptions, etc, etc. But I do believe that a great many people are ready for to make these changes in their lives. 🙂

I wonder how many hospitals in the UK could use local producers much more than ordering food wholesale in the vans that arrive. Pubs could do the same although most of them probably do. We can always do more. I have difficulty finding suppliers but use what's local. This idea of a food finders hub ought to be successful.
