Hi Ben, the bad stretch of KKH is where one of the new biggest Dams is being currently built, I suspect once the dam has been built then they will tarmac the road, usually the drive over Kaghan Valley is much better, more scenic and shorter but due to the heavy snowfall over Babusar pass is blocked, hence the drive you took over KKH is much longer.

This dessert 'Skardu' in Pakistan is one of the most beautiful sceneries I've seen, that's even after years of watching David Attenborough since I was a young kid in 70s and his world travels. Wish I hadn't been disabled in a serious car accident in 2001 because I never get to do anything like this anymore you are really lucky.
