Food restrictions require subsititutes. So glad to see GF rice pasta made the list! Dairy substitutes are a little harder. Freeze dried veggies, seasonings and a healthy oil or good old avocado is great for shorter hikes. I would love to see the non-dairy challenge solutions!

I don't like the taste of cow's milk, so I use coconut milk powder a lot. The down side is that it clumps easily, and it'll really clump in cold temperatures. In beverages, keep the packet close to my body to warm it up and then massage it. There'll still be little chunks, but I consider them yummy fat flavor bombs.

I can certainly work on a non-dairy video. Thanks for the suggestion! 👍

@@kimkremer8915 consider almond milk powder. I carry both. Coconut for cooking, almond for hot and cold drinks.

Great content. We like eating frozen Snickers at home. the snack size. So Snickers works ok in winter except it can make you colder :) I like the "heat" from spicy corn nuts.

Something that I see on KZbin that is sorely needed is more nutritional recommendations for thru packers who are resuppling in towns along the trail. These are some great recommendations for backpackers who are good planners and prepare. Thank you for this video.

Totally agree! I'm working on writing up sample meal plans for folks resupplying in town that are nutritionally complete. It can be done with a little know-how.

Thanks! As always good tips! I'm not a fan of chips or sneakers generally though...nut mix is what I pack usually. Will try the various "drinkable/don't need to take off gloves" stuff though as snack though! Tofu...I always mess up with it. Last time I rehidrated it with cous cous...tofu stayed rock hard, cous cous was soaked...ooops...
@backcountryfoodie2 жыл бұрын
Do you dehydrate the tofu yourself? The trick is to freeze it before dehydrating it. Otherwise, it's more like tofu jerky.

I just tried a new dessert. I put a Jello pudding packet in a freezer bag with 1/3 cup of NIDO. On trail I add 10oz of cold water into bag and stir with a spoon for a couple minutes. Have pudding in about 10 minutes.

That's one of my fav desserts! Kick it up a notch by adding shredded coconut, powdered freeze dried fruit, and/or vanilla wafers. My fav is our key lime pie pudding recipe. Cheesecake pudding mix with True Lime powder and crushed graham crackers. YUM!

Another great video on food tips. We love those Coffee Beans instead of heating up water for regular coffee in the AM. Those Carnation Instant Breakfast are so under estimated also. Thanks for the great tips.

A Very long time ago I went into the ADK's in February with a bunch of those old power bars (taffy like consistency). The froze and I had a tough day hike to say the least......

Dehydrating tofu.... definately going to try it. Do you dehydrate it raw or do you prepare it first?
@backcountryfoodie3 жыл бұрын
Steps for dehydrating tofu: 1. The key is to freeze it first. Okay to leave it in the package as is. 2. Thaw and chop into 1/4" pieces. 3. Dehydrate at 135℉ (57℃) until brittle. 4. Be sure to store in an airtight container as it will quickly absorb moisture from the air. Super easy!

Where can I purchase the packages that you use for your meal replacement drinks?
@backcountryfoodie3 жыл бұрын
I'm trail testing packaging from TekPak Solutions and Elevate Packaging. My recommendation would be to buy a larger size than you think you need. The 8 oz pouches that I'm testing hold the dry food, but aren't large enough to add water and stir most meals/beverages.
