Thank you for putting a guide page for the trip on your website. Also, please tell Mehap thanks for making and sharing the gpx file. I subscribed to Gaia a few weeks ago. Haven’t used it much yet except to record a few hikes. I think I will have to get the in-reach mini when I start going out for longer stretches and hopefully thru-hike. My Sister is already starting to be bothered by my being out alone on hikes with no cell signal. I have to admit it was a little unsettling at first. And the other day my dog and I cut our hike short (in Alabama) coz I had forgotten it’s hunting season. There were lots of hunters parked along the backroads. Luckily, I had a dirty bright pink tshirt of mine in my van that I put on my dog. But hearing nearby gun shots while hiking takes away some of the enjoyment 😂

The camera upgrade is worth the weight, a little surprised you didn’t pair your phone with Moment lenses though. The video is great, slick edit and stellar stills. Can you please feed your buddy more than trail side berries? Hand the kid a freakin’ sandwich! Nice to see some ladies out there hiking too!

Apache, can you show/explain how you do your route overlays on the map and put these shots in your video -- like for example, at 8:49 in this video? Nice technique to show context. Appreciate your videos.

Sure thing! While hiking the route, MeHap was using Gaia GPS on the iPhone to record a GPS track of our trip. It is surprisingly efficient on battery and very effective! Once we were home, he edited the file to form a cohesive track and separate the track by day. Then we exported that GPX (or maybe it was KML) file to Google Earth Pro (a free program.) Google Earth has a film maker mode, which allows you to setup shots and pans, then turn them into a movie file. From there I just import the file into my editing software and trim it a bit.

Planning to head out there next week. October! But the weather looks good so far as it can be predicted. Any thoughts about gear, specifically for steep snow this time of year? Thanks for any advice, and thanks for the great videos!
@BackcountryBanter
@BackcountryBanter 3 жыл бұрын
The Wind's very frequently will get snow in October so make sure to have the appropriate gear for an unexpected snow. I have no idea what current snow pack is like in the Winds right now so I'd hate to give you bad advice about that. I would say take all of your safety gear though. You just never know.

I just watched it for a second time (this time) on a bigger screen, and it got even better. Great job Joe! I would be interested to know what you use for a camera and lens, and where or how you get the soundtrack/background music from? That stuff plays a huge roll in the finished product.
@BackcountryBanter
@BackcountryBanter 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I use a Sony a6300 with a 10-18mm wide angle lens. Most of the music is done by Lakey Inspired (linked to in the description of the video) and some of the background sound (and intro music) is done by myself in Garageband.

Also, what GPS and mapping software do you use?
@BackcountryBanter
@BackcountryBanter 6 жыл бұрын
We were using iPhones with Gaia GPS installed. It allows you to store many different types of maps and routes for offline use. MeHap used it to create the GPS tracks you see in the video too. It is surprisingly efficient on battery and did an amazing job of creating tracks. The shots in the video were created using Google Earth Pro (free).

Hi Joe, want to ask about your tarp. I am 6'3'' tall, how long you think the flat tarp should be (to provide enough protection) as I do not to want use a bivi. Second question, how do you deal with a bugs when sleep? Thanks
@BackcountryBanter
@BackcountryBanter 6 жыл бұрын
I'd go 10' long at the minimum, up to 11' for extra protection. On most of my thru hikes, bugs weren't an issue. When they do get bad, I just use a 3 oz sea to summit nano mosquito net under my tarp for protection. This is the one I use: amzn.to/2ATkOBg

Honest question not judging but what did you do regarding your food and bear precautions? Last I read there were grizzly sightings on the northern side of the range.
@BackcountryBanter
@BackcountryBanter 6 жыл бұрын
A few of the others carried bear spray and one person had an ursack. We all just slept with our food. For 75% of the high route I wouldn't be concerned about bears at all, given the elevation, lack of vegetation, and isolation. For the remaining parts, I honestly still wasn't really worried, and felt perfectly comfortable "attending" my food at night. I have heard many people talk about grizzlies existing throughout the winds but have never seen any myself (not that this is reason to believe they aren't around.) For what it's worth, I didn't see any signs of bears on the trip either.

how were the bugs that time of year???
@BackcountryBanter
@BackcountryBanter 6 жыл бұрын
Very limited. I cowboy camped or open tarped every night and had no issues. There were a few skeeters around, but as soon as the sun started setting, they took off. They weren't aggressive either. I've heard it can get rough in the heart of summer though.
@brentwelborn25
@brentwelborn25 6 жыл бұрын
Exactly--that's why I was wondering, how late in summer i should go to avoid the bugs. Sounds like you timed it nicely in late august. Sept is likely the safe cut off most years but then you're butting up against the start of things getting cold.

Your CDT videos were exceptional. With the Wind River videos all the extra stuff like the sound (especially) and inserts take away from that incredible place. Do you really think that kind of music or whatever helps your videos?????????????????
