@@colinmckee7613 No, we actually sold our Gregory packs to go UL and bought the Gossamer Gear Mariposa 60L pack. At 2 lbs., we knocked off over 3.5 lbs. from our Gregory packs. I'll be 71 in August and am trying to cut down how much I pack. There are things like my Chair Zero which I really need due to a bad back, so I have to cut down weight everywhere that I can, like the pack itself.

Thanks - appreciate your review. I've been a long term user of Gregory backpacks, most recently the Baltoro 85. This has been a superb pack for ten day to two week treks. You demonstrated some interesting revisions - updates that are nice enhancements. I'll certainly keep this in mind when replacement needed.

Something to note with this version, you no longer get a raincover included, nor do you get the removable summit pack. Both are now sold separately for $39.95 a piece. 🤑

@@GetUpTheMountains - I saw another review on the 2022 Baltoro where Gregory duped the reviewer by including the rain cover in the evaluation version. Cutting out the rain cover and removable summit pack is how they got the reported weight down. So to compare to the 2018 version you have to add the weight of those two options as well as another $80. :(
@GetUpTheMountains
@GetUpTheMountains 2 жыл бұрын
@@TrekStar30 You can see it on a bunch of places if you look at comments. Occasionally you'll find a Gregory sales rep come in and paste this company response that blames the pandemic shortages for the "hard choices" they've had to make, and a bunch of other excuses. I made a poor review mentioning the decrease in value on Gregory's webpage for the new Baltoro and it was removed for "violating their review guidelines" lol. They're totally pulling the wool over their customer's eyes. Not cool.

I have the previous model Baltoro 65 that I bought just over 2 years ago and love it. My wife and I both got one and we were able to pack enough for a 2 night trip with everything we needed for our 2 year old (extra sleeping pad, sleeping bag, toys) and we had a lot of food left over when we left. We also brought a bunch of luxury items (tarps, chairs, etc...). The 65 should easily be able to handle 1 person for 4 days if you don't bring a bunch of luxury items. Like he said, if you pack smart you could easily extend the range out to 7+ days. Such a versatile backpack that works for beginners and thru hikers alike.

No waayyy!!! I have JUST LITERALLY TODAY bave discovered the Gregory Baltamore backpack (through another video that wasn't even advertising it, it was just there in the background!) And I have shared it with my bf to try and convince him to have a look at it, and maybe... even love it enough to buy it?? But what happened to the comparison I was expecting?? You said that you had the older version for a long time but no mention of what's different? Better? Not better?? I feel scammed!! You didn't talk about none of that!! Most importantly!! Are the hip belts pockets bigger now??! Apparently they are far too small for a regular modern sized phone.in it's current version!! I need answers!!! 😩😩😭 😉😂

I have the baltoro 75 from about 6 years ago. Love it and find it extremely comfortable. Only downside is the it is a little heavy. Would be interesting if they could have dropped the weight to around 3 to 3.25 lbs. But oh well, I just need to keep maintaining my workouts.

Nice thorough review. I have the older version with the one pocket brain and different sacrum grip on the hip belt. I found it super stable with 40lbs in her for a two nighter. The trail I was on was heavy Eastern Forest, narrow, wet, and very rooty/ undulating. My Baltoro 65 never caused me to forced me off my centre of gravity. Pleased cause third day hike out was in the rain and that trail was really slippy. I paid three hundred and something CDN for mine. Must have been seven years ago. That and my Gregory Massif are a pride and joy.

Get ready for a shock in weight going from the stouts to any of the "full featured" Gregory packs. They have a lot of added stuff I find I don't need and zippers Gregory loves adding as many zippers as they can lol I miss my old Stout the simplistic design and lightness. I now run a Zulu 55 for 80% of my 1-2 nighters and bought a used baltoro 65 for winter camping. definately the baltoro is more suited to technical trekking, winter camping etc. the amount of attachment points and loops on mine and the sheer toughness of it makes it a high quality bag but I do think it's way over kill for anyone novice or doing a overnighter.

Gregory says it'll carry 50lbs, I know I've been close when starting out for a long trip and having to carry a week's worth of food and up to 5 quarts of water. Rainfly now sold separately for $40. Gregory provided review packs to influencers with a rainfly, so many new reviews overlook it's removal for 2022. Gregory's reasoning is some real hilarious skrinkflation logic about "saving the customer money" because "not everyone needs a raincover", as though some of their customers apparently aren't hiking under the sky.

I was torn between the Baltoro and the Aether, and ultimately went home with the Aether. The big difference when I was shopping was the price difference. At the time the Baltoro was $30 more and it didn’t include the rain cover. That made the price between the two more like $70 if you’re getting the OEM cover. Now that the Aether has had a price increase, I think the decision would be harder. I really liked the comfort of the Baltoro, but the Aether is also extremely comfortable. But even then, unless you find one exceptionally more comfortable, it’s hard to justify any price difference for a 4oz difference in weight. I also don’t know that I would prefer the extra pockets of the Baltoro. As I’ve packed my pack repeatedly I find that I’m liking it better with less dividers. The hip belt and top lid are plenty of compartments for me.

I like external pockets to catch all the little stuff, but I have learned over the years that I don't care about sleeping bag compartments. The way you pack, or at least the way I pack, it's the first thing in and the last thing out so it's just as easy to do it from the top than fiddle with the zippers and buckles of a sleeping bag compartment.

I know, 10 months later. I can't speak to the Mystery Ranch product but as a Baltoro 65 owner, I can say it's very good pack. Just about everything is adjustable so getting a good fit should be easy for just about any body. Honestly I'm scratching my head over the price of the Mystery Ranch. It's quite a bit more expensive and it's several ounces heavier. And the page doesn't mention a rain cover which the Gregory includes. But honestly I think a waterproof plastic pack liner is better than a rain cover so I wouldn't put much weight on that when choosing. Also, one thing I love about the Gregory is that you can access the main compartment 3 different ways. From the top like a large sac. From the bottom if you just want to grab something from the bottom without unpacking the whole thing. And third, you can unzip the back panel and access the main compartment like a suitcase.

Their reply to me was that not every customer uses their packs in the rain, so its more environmentally friendly to not include them. They actually suggested I use a rain cover from an old pack, lol. They also had no real answer for not including the summit pack anymore either. So, we get far less pack than before, pay more money for it, and the CEO of Samsonite (who bought Gregory Packs in 2014) gets another mega yacht. Thanks for nothing, Greg!

Whether it is the waste belt, side straps, or any other random strap found on the pack, they all needed to be severely shortened. Tuck the waist belt straps under the velcro pockets. Works great.

Thats the old models that had the liftable velcro side pockets. These new hip pockets are sewn down onto the belt like a Katmai, Zulu, Stout, or Paragon. Video didn't really cover the differences.

@@JoelManers No sweat, Joel. I have the old model Baltoro, and I'd quite like having the larger hip pockets. I'd cut the waist strap down to my required length and sew the ends over to finish. 👍

@@GetUpTheMountains Agreed. I have the old Baltoro 75. It’s a fantastic load hauler and tough as nails. I recently bought an REI Flash 55 though. I use that one as a light weight weekend pack. It’s about half the weight of the Baltoro. If I could only have one pack though, I’d probably get the Paragon 55. It’s a nice compromise between the two.

@@JoelManers So I had a deeper look at the Baltoro today, Joel. Get this. For the same $350 price as our old one, it no longer comes with a rain cover, which is now sold separately at $39.95. They also no longer include the summit pack/hydration bladder holder, also sold separately as the "Nano14" at $39.95. That's 2 dropped features on this new model costing an additional $80! Can you imagine having to pay $430 for the same Baltoro75 as the old one? Greg appears to be nickle and dimeing out here. Not impressed.

Honestly the built and looks of the back pannel mesh and the hip belt thats literally the Osprey AG system. The only downside on the Ospreys is the aluminum frame. Its bent up in ways that really shortens the capacity of the backpack but makes it more breatheable

The hip belt pockets are hook and loop to the belt. You can lift them up after snugging the belt and stash the extra belt under them so they're not dangling down in front of you.
@GetUpTheMountains
@GetUpTheMountains 2 жыл бұрын
They've redesigned them. They are no longer lift/velcro down, they're sewn down permanently like regular hip belt pockets.

And the summit pack no longer included either. All while raising the price by $20. Both are available to purchase separately not for $40 each. 😬 $20+$40+$40= $100 extra to get what the old model had. Shrinkflation at its worst.

Liking for the sweet hike can't wait to go to Arizona and do some hiking in the Sedona area, Grand Canyon, and Saguaro National Park. I don't really like Gregory they are made more for rock climbers and ice climbers. Still set on Osprey. Although I do like that uzip on the brain and the adjustable sternum strap is nice.

I have a pile of BP’s (even a few Gregory packs which I love) but once I moved over to the UL world a few years ago I can’t bring myself to carrying a 4-5 lb pack 😳…… ever again unless I’m hitting the trail on a long trip in the winter. That pack is half of my winter base weight including my pack
@TrekStar30
@TrekStar30 2 жыл бұрын
I'm in the market for a load hauler and while some recommend ULs, the consensus view seems to be that the comfort gained from a heavier pack is worth the extra couple of pounds. I've read too many reviews about UL minimalist shoulder straps cutting into you. I think it would be better to just lose a couple of pounds body weight and buy the heavier pack with a better, padded harness system.

I strongly disagree with you on the Gerber folding knife. It, very frankly, is unsafe. a finger can (and in my case did) get in the gaps, and cut you. Please reconsider this recommendation. As a fellow Eric, that should carry extra clout.

Water bottle looks impossible to reach
@Im_With_Stupid

It is impossible to reach for me. I can touch it, but that's it, can't get it out and definitely can't put it back in. It's a gimmicky feature they never should've sacrificed the normal side pocket to implement. That said, some people can do it no problem, but then some people aren't 50 years old (yet) and don't have a shoulder that was horribly broken in their youth and probably cost them a lot of range of motion. Everybody can benefit from a standard side pocket, though, and that's what they should've put there.
@Im_With_Stupid
@Im_With_Stupid 9 ай бұрын
@@GetUpTheMountains I wouldn't say it's completely useless. I hate that pocket, but it is good for storing extra water or even just an empty bottle to use in camp. Plus, if you're mad and just want something to gripe about you can pull it out and fuss about how stupid it is, because it is a stupid feature.
