I think they and Dixie and a handful of others of four or five should try to get on one of the late night shows such as Colbert or Kimmel and talk about what it's like to be a KZbin backpacker and the experiences they have. They would have all kinds of great stories. Backpacking has become very hot in part because of covid. It would be a great opportunity for them to talk about Leave No Trace Behind to a wide audience. I mean, Johnny would interview someone like that. Letterman would, too. Both guys would make them fun interviews. I am sick of non-stop celebrity interviews.

@@BackpackingTV I just sent the following through the proper channel at Jimmy Kimmel Live: Howdy Backpacking is really hot right now, especially with COVID-19. There are several backpacking KZbinrs who have a lot of charisma and huge followings that I think would be great for a group appearance together on Jimmy Kimmel. Johnny used to do those kind of interviews all the time on The Tonight show, remember? Letterman, too. They're good way to break things up. The unofficial queen of backpacking among KZbinrs is Jessica Mills, aka Dixie, whose channel is Homemade Wanderlust. She is universally respected and adored. She's been to some spectacular places and is very good at videography on the trail. She carries herself extremely well. Eric Hanson at backpacking TV and Dan Becker of Dan Becker's KZbin channel by the same name have been doing a lot of programming together and have a really great back-and-forth chemistry. They're fun to watch, but also informative. Again, widely respected. Another person I would suggest has a channel called Jupiter Hikes. Jupiter is his "trail name". I do not know his actual name. But he done some amazing hikes with virtually nothing on his back. Talk about Spartan. The topic lends itself to a lot of interesting conversation, like how do they do all of this photography on the trail, or what are the downsides to being a KZbinr of your hobby, or how hard it is to make money being a KZbinr. There are lots of angles. Of course, thefecwould need to be at least one other female, and there are so many good ones from whom to choose on KZbin, so I would recommend you ask these other potential guests who would they suggest appear. (Oops - I should have proofread it better - I have a crazy keyboard and dyslexia, so...Anyway, I doubt anybody in Booking will ever see my suggestion, but maybe they will surprise us.)

We see a lot of newer gear..and i get it, its your guys' job. But would love a comparison of gear youve had forever or has lasted a lot longer than expected. As a frugal hiker... i cant buy multiple sets of gear for every environment so my sleeping bag and tent are for 0 degrees.. i camp more in winter but use what i got even in spring summer trips. Side note... i hike solo mostly, but the wife was excited for the zen bivy as shes always had bad sleep in the backcountry... just ordered one after seeing both your reviews and reading the comments. Cant wait to head out this winter in it.... i mean, for the wife to use.. yeah, thats what i meant.

If I can give you one piece of advice above all - get a tent comfortably wide enough and long enough for you that weighs less than 3 lbs.. If you are taller than 5'-10", you will find your choice of comfortable tents drops to a handful. You don't want to waste money on a tent that is too small. You will end up buying another tent. The Tarptent Double Rainbow series of tents are big enough for most tall solo hikers, but the 3FUL Lanshin 2 is too short, though it is a otherwise a fine value tent. Happy trails!

Message for Dan: If you don't like the Big Agnes sleep system, have you considered the Feathered Friends Flicker UL Wide bag/quilt? I have the 20 Degree and LOVE it! Under 2 lbs. and can be a sleeping bag and/or quilt. I put it in a roll top dry bag and it didn't take up enough room in my pack so I took it out and just stuffed it in the bottom! The best of both worlds (and I loathe mummy bags as I'm claustrophobic). 😉

At some point (don't know when), I'll be going for a Zenbivy. I discovered, as a new backpacker, that a mummy sleeping bag is just pure hell for me. They're plenty warm, but feel ridiculously constricting regarding movement, even though I have one with a wide shoulder area. I'm willing to pay the price for quality sleep. One of the most helpful things you and Dan point out a lot is what the good sleeping pads are (very important - thanks).

I’m a stomach sleeper myself and yet to lay comfortably on my stomach. Eventually I’ll go to a quilt for a try just financially not ready. I do like the Nemo tent and I need a chair! I had wanted the Helinox but couldn’t pull the trigger in cost so went with REI lite for less and still only 1lb.

This is the first time I've ever been drawn to try something that isn't a sleeping bag. That zenbivy is appealing I just wish I could try it without selling my kidney. Dan's tent, Dan's cook system, Eric's sleep system (maybe with a lighter pad), all packed into an Osprey Atmos would be my dream set-up. I also like both chairs. If there was somehow a chair with a backrest that swiveled for under 1.5lbs that would be 🙌

I'm all for the Bridger 65! I have been using ultralight packs and endured the shoulder and sometimes hip pain from the lack of padding and stability offered. SMD's Minimalist V2 with their running vest helps immensely with stability and comfort, but nearing 30 pounds it is uncomfortably felt on the shoulders. I have a few things that weight a bit more, and I like to be able to comfortably load up to six days of supplies so I tend to go a bit heavy at the beginning of my hikes. The Bridger 65 carries this weight so well and is extremely comfortable. I was worried about that 5.2 lbs but after a couple of hikes I realized that weight is a non-issue!

A lot of the stuff Dan carries I'd never carry and I was confused about this for a while until you guys made that video of Dan doing his first summit then it was clear. Carrying comfort items is no problem if you aren't carrying them 6000 feet up a mountain. I've never carried a chair, I wouldn't bring an air pump etc etc. backpacking up a big ass mountain is a completely different experience than doing it on trails through a forest.

Dont doubt they are nice, but use one of the "traditional" self-inflating Thermarests that's one inch thick. IMO the arms "falling off" the sides of the pad is much less of a problem with thinner pads, but of course a one inch pad isn't quite as comfortable as one of the thick pads in the video.

Agree on the wide sleep pads but the Nemo won’t take two 25” pads without overlapping. I went with a 3 person Big Agnes’s for 2 wide pads.

I think the Hyperlite Mountain Gear Southwest 3400 backpack is amazing. I had mine loaded to 37lbs at trip start and had no issues over 5 days in RMNP. I was concerned because I had heard the same thing about ~30lbs being the max comfortable weight. I dont know if i am lucky in that my torso came out right between M and L so I went L (per Hyperlite's recommendations) and maybe that extra half inch or so in the shoulders made it ride beautifully? And when day hiking, being able to roll it down so you dont have the bulk of other 55L bags is also great. I also had it out all night i the rain with the straps towards the ground and didnt find any water got in so I do think its likely the stitching on the straps that could let water in if its pouring on you. I was worried at first but best piece of gear I have bought thus far.

G'day Dan & Eric, great double act. Can you use your platforms to ask some company to make small dry bags with a vent valve. My bikepacking gear has a small valve so you can get all the air out when rolling down the bag. This would be great on dry dtti bag size when backpacking so you're not trying to pack a balloon. Better for space organisation. Keep up the good video, maybe a Dan & Eric downunder video 🤔✌️

For the loads that you two guys are carrying, might I suggest you try the Seek Outside Divide backpack? It is lightweight yet can carry a heavy load very comfortably. At around 2.25 lbs., it can carry up to 200 lbs. The fabric is XPAC.

@@BackpackingTV I like a lot about it. It carries 45 lbs. better than my Arc Haul carries 35 lbs. Two things I don't like: 1) It is hard to reach for a bottle in the side pockets. 2) The velcro strapping in the middle of the front for adjusting the frame height to the torso has sharp, hemmed, corners that rub against the middle of my back. I will tape over the strap to fix it before my next trip. That should do the trick. The corners should be rounded. But there is a ton more of clever features I love about the pack.

Enjoyed the video. My pack is heavy too but like you it Carrie’s heavier loads with ease and is organized well. I use an Osprey Aether 60 that is just under 5 lbs and is bulletproof. I figure some of the really lightweight backpacks are too minimalist…like a bag with shoulder straps, for me. Yeah my base weight is about 20lbs but everything is padded so well and carrys beautifully that the weight doesn’t bother me. All in maybe 30-35 lbs.

It fits well in the bottom compartment of the Bridger, no problems at all. I do refer to it being bulky, so I use a compression sack to get the Zenbivy to a good size but it takes a little more muscle and effort than other bags.

Was just at Sawtooth lake and saw that camp site from a distance. Definitely a top ten location. Not a fan of the Bridger. That yoke system is great if it happens to fit. If you are on the smaller side of the size range those pockets are on top of your shoulders and difficult to use.

If you carry heavy loads like that you might be interested in checking out Mystery Ranch's Terraframe. It has very heavy load capacity and is my preferred pack if I need to carry 45+. Good notes on the other stuff. As for where we made camp, there was only enough space to put tents where we did. Everything else was rocky/slopey and not good for a tent!

First of all both your setups are great. I am probably a little more geared towards your setup though the zen bivy looks awesome and I have your backpack on my wishlist. Shout out to Dan though he’s the reason I bought the Paria Outdoor Bryce 2p tent and the flex tail pump/light. Also the MSR pocket rocket deluxe. Recently bought a titanium spoon/fork on sale 2 for $12 or something like that. I also bought a titanium trowel, wish I would have got the deuce though. Don’t have any cooking pots yet. Thinking about getting a toaks 750ml and either the jetboil or msr nonstick ceramic skillet. I also want to get a French press system.

Kind of an off the wall question which really doesn't have to do with the video but being as both Dan and Eric are in this one you're some of my favorite guys to follow on KZbin I wanted to pose a question that would make for a very interesting video if you were having to teach somebody who is new to camping backpacking outdoors anything like that the necessary skills to make their experience more enjoyable ( and safe) what would you say were the top skills they should learn that would be a crossover between not just backpacking but prepping and bushcraft because there's a huge range of skills in all those different disciplines that do apply across the full spectrum So what would you say would be the best crossover skills for them to learn that would be the most useful overall just in your opinions from personal experience? Would you guys be interested in doing a joint video to demonstrate these crossover skills and their benefits? (not with me of course) I think people would love it.

(Edit) Zen Bivy: good. Hopefully it is all insulated unlike my Exped Winterlite. Is that the same grey Exped pad where they decided not to fill any down in its outside rails? I have that one. I Emailed them & only the green synthetic insulated ones get the outside rails: still not the Downmat or U7 or whatever it is now. --No where in the videos or specs do they suggest those rails are not insulated: bogus I told them for 238 dollar mat. I paid for it all to be R6.9.

Good tip to get a tent and sleep system before buying the backpack. Seems like most peeps buy too big pack first. Like me. 😅👍
