@Bombproofbutter Temptation about got me in a whole lot of trouble when I was a teen. I had just gotten ATWIAD and let a friend/coworker listen to it while I was working and she was in the office. I didn't think anything of it but that night my dad asked me if ATWIAD had any curse words in it. I told him no, not a one and he said that the aunt of the coworker had heard something vulgar. I reiterated that there were no curse words that I was aware of and told him he could listen. He trusted me(thankfully) and I never heard anything else about it again. Thirty years later I was listening to Temptation and "I can almost taste the wetness between your..." was spoken and I realized that was what her aunt had heard. Oh well, I didn't lie, it wasn't a curse word..

NPG era scrubs? Dr. Fink as a member of the actual 'New Power Generation' was only in 1990 and at that time he wore very cool custom scrubs that were NOT off the rack of a medical uniform rack, but came in alternative colors to typical scrub colors and wore BLACK custom scrubs as an NPG member in the Nude Tour as you can see him in with Rosie Gaines on the cover of Keyboard Magazine in 1990 and on any live video of the tour, if you can make Dr. Fink out. Come to think of it, "Around the world in a day" DID have it's share of songs that became staples and not just "Raspberry beret" Because "Pop Life" also was from that album And then there's "America" which when performed the right way is one of Prince's most devastating live songs, look up the live in Paris version to see that song it all its glory. So I was saddened to see the current live performances of "America" and have the Band play it true to the album version instead of giving it that fire that the Paris version had.

_Purple Rain_ was deliberately crafted by Prince to make him a superstar, but he was caught off guard when that is exactly what happened. The enormous mainstream popularity and the fact that it was widely regarded as his "masterpiece" left him disillusioned, frustrated and disconcerted.
@wendileona6 жыл бұрын
Prince achieved longevity because he changed his style, sound and created themes for eras, fast. If he's gotten stuck in Purple Rain style, he would of gotten dated fast. But if you listen carefully, Prince did keep a lot of his early 80s style in his music through the Gold Experience, but just with updated instrumentation, and so on. .::modernaire

Intersting to point that out. Prince once said he felt he was born in the wrong time, he should of been popular in the 60s and 70s, something like that. So yes, back in '85 that was part of the hype and feel, that it was psychedelic and was influenced by Sgt Pepper due to it's cover artwork, which is compelling today... but Prince drew inspiration as noted by Wendy & Lisa from Daud and Wendy's brother, where those guys were into the Los Angeles Paisley Underground scene. .::Modernaire

I remember when it came out it was a buzz kill to the Purple Rain energy. With Purple Rain you were introduced to the different groups and it felt like a new funkier Motown, a family of sorts. Then blam! Everyone's gone, the edgy rock sound was gone, the iconic look he cultivated since 1999 was gone. It killed the momentum then. I liked the album but felt it should've come after Parade and before S.O.T.T.
@keithmorgan7422 жыл бұрын
Love this group. That being said.... Retire the "scrubs" costume. Put on some clothes.
@wendileona6 жыл бұрын
You read this from me... FIRST, forget 'the org' or other 'Euro-elite-purple-illuminati-fans'... I've always thought since I literally studied the album when it came out in 1985, that ATWIAD, if you really listen to it, is Purple Rain II. Almost every song, is a sister song to song on Purple Rain. The Ladder is Purple Rain's sister song. Same tempo, same kind of vibe. Tambourine is Darling Nikki, where Prince actually gives the PMRC yet another song, right under their noses! That's a hilarious song. America, one of Prince's most right-wing patriotic songs is a sister song to Baby I'm A Star, at least in LM-1 drum machine beat and tempo. Lots of alternative songs. Condition is the yang of Beautiful Ones. In my view also that the album came out awkward is because it was kind of something new to what Prince had done in 1999 through Purple Rain, the public and new fans wanted another Purple Rain but only those that saw the light got it. But I do remember it was rather too soon, Dr. Fink in another interview a whiles back says he wished that Prince would of toured Purple Rain in Europe but moved on. Also of note is that Prince started having problems with WB as early as this album. AND, the video for future SOTT wasn't a Prince production either! Prince drew inspiration for ATWIAD as noted by Wendy & Lisa from Daud and Wendy's brother, where those guys were into the Los Angeles Paisley Underground scene. Thus, later Prince giving a song to The Bangles and the Three O Clock signed to Paisley Park label. And as The Revolution mentions here, Prince by the time Manic Monday's LA Paisley Underground Sound was a hit, Prince was filming Under The Cherry Moon in totally classic Hollywood 30s style already! And by that UTCM time, he was already entering the Camille/Dream Factory/Crystal Ball/Madhouse/Flesh phase! Insane prolific pace! Back to ATWIAD, there WAS buzz though for Around The World, MTV hyped the Raspberry Beret video like crazy AND even the VJs analyzed every bit of it after it was premiered, calling Prince's new hair style the 'Liza Minelli'! I'm serious! And it's interesting to note yet again that Prince adopted that kind of short style in the Gold Experience era of 1995, but with longer bangs. The Hulk hair purple factoid is a hilarious! Aside from that, and again you read this from ME; there's something about the cover NOW, that is truly amazing. But I'll leave it for when I actually run into a Revolution member to discuss it with them. But if I made you realize something, it was me, HERE right after you read this comment. .::Modernaire

Around the World in a Day came and went. It just didn't have a spark and Purple Rain was like Quiet Riot's Metal Health. Both albums needed room to breathe and it's hard to comeback with something that defeats the beast that they created and shot both into stardom..Here's the difference; where Quiet Riot kept trying to re-create another Metal Health and it came off cheap and just thoughtless; Prince however did let Purple Rain have it's day but, the around the world in a day album cover confused and turned off a lot of fans and since the biggest single was a super sugar-coated song that paled to anything off his previous two records, it was a bad step-back,,then Parade came and even more people especially his male audience mostly jumped ship,,Then, thank the good Lord, '87 rolled around and he gave us what he shoulda in '85, Sign o' the times,,,remarkable and it put him on the map til the day he died...without the strength of that album, i'm afraid he may not have recovered his foul ball as easily as he did...Culture Club sank, as did Duran Duran and Cyndi Lauper was considered an annoying whiney joke by '87. Pop was on its last leg,,hell even Michael's album, Bad wasn't nothing compared to his previous though Bad had hit after hit,,he had made himself a mockery and he lost any cool appeal,,he was just radio's lil bitch boy that nobody really cared about...All of Prince's contender's and peers had either died out by '87 or just broke up and became a joke; like WHAM! and Twisted Sister..Prince gave us our first true reality check in the 80's,,it wasn't a party album like 1999, or a golden pop production like PR, it was totally uncharted and new to sing about AIDS and children with no parents on count of drugs..He was the conscience of the 80's,,without Prince all we would have would be fucking Material Girl and Girls just wanna have fun and the over-hyped Thriller,,which does not stand as tall and has fallen while PR is still hailed and appreciated.

Very good assessment, YOU, like I, were their and you have a great accurate view of pop culture at the time. I agree, and to an extent that may have been why he disbanded the Revolution, one of many reasons, but that he needed to be in the studio ALONE again. Thus, the whole Fairlight LM-1 sampled dark brooding, urban future yet retro Funk of SOTT/Crystal Ball/Camille, not in that order, set him in a different course, one that would include the Funk Bible AND Lovesexy as the 'redeemer' album. That's a whole other subject that is amazing. But almost any and every album that has a dramatic change either set Prince to launch himself and set the motion for something else and sometimes he'd leave it in one album like on Parade, then expand on it like SOTT until it got boring and then a whole new Rave came along. But that was the Prince of the 80s, totally different than the Prince of the mid to late 90s and 00s. .::Modernaire.

Thriller is still considered the greatest and most important album of the 80s though.
