Well, we're told that she walks in the avenue near where her mother is buried, which is where she arranges to meet Edgardo Ravenswood. That looks clever. On the other hand, her first aria tells us that she sees the ghost of a murdered girl whose body fell into the fountain. That looks haunted. Then her resistance to the arranged marriage is strong and consistent, until absence of any reply from Edgardo plus the forged letter of his unfaithfulness, breaks her resistance. I don't think there's any madness so far. What seems to break her is not only Edgardo's return, but more importantly, seeing that he believes that it is her who has betrayed him, the ultimate injustice. To me it appears that she descends first into murderous desperation to escape her fate, then into suicidal depression, her mind flees to where it wants to be, with Edgardo.
