We left our strawberries completely uncovered this past winter (southern Illinois). We had snow, late frosts, and all sorts of rain. They've been blooming, slowly, for two weeks now. Over the past week, it's been unseasonably warm, and they're starting to look like hydrangeas now. Same with our asparagus -- we did a light cover on them, but nothing big, and we've had two good harvests already. So I'm convinced most gardeners work too hard -- nature seems to find it's way no matter what we do.

I had mulched around our strawberries, but they were not covered over. They are exploding in growth now in SW Ohio. So is my garlic. And strangely enough, today I discovered a few potatoes growing in a bed where they were last spring! Where have they been for a year? Why didn't they come up in the fall?
@Cici1791

@@pixievincent2478 Probably some of the smaller potatoes that were left in the ground survived the winter in a dormant state and came up as volunteers in the spring. I'm in zone 3 and last year I started doing a fall planting of leftover spuds after getting volunteers like you did, naturally. I was expecting my fall planted spuds to come up earlier than my spring planted crop this year, but low and behold, they came up two or three weeks later (I may have buried them under too deep a layer of leaf mulch in the fall). But, they were very lush and stalky are growing very vigorously. I expect they'll be ready to harvest about a week or two after the spring crop, and can't wait to see how the two harvests will compare!

Would love to get another update on this, especially the dome-less direct sowing! I'm thinking of direct sowing native perennials in a few areas of my garden this winter.

I'm from Quebec and I enjoyed your vidéos. I was very interested in your winter sowing method. I'm always happy to say that I have free lettuce and tomatoes growing back every year by themselves in my garden. I always plant additionnal in my garden and can compare that the free stuffs is quite good! Do you have updates for the end of your 2023 season? What are your comments regarding that experience?

This is my second season doing WS, Im in zone 6a. I found the brassica's are exceptional sprouters with WS. A couple others are zinnia, snapdragons. Others I have not had success and will probably not try again.

ty for the update. i will be honest.. i miss the animations.. which take a ton of effort i am sure so i get it. what i got out of this was to just make cold frames for the raised beds. extends the season and gets an earlier start etc. im more than happy to give up on most of my cold season growlight plants if possible

This is my second year of wintersowing in jugs, this year more herbs and flowers. Some didn’t sprouted yet, some are already in de vegetable garden. No vegetables accept tomatoes but I sowed them last week, that’s not really wintersowing but springsowing 😂. I like the way it naturally tike its own time. And it saves so much time and work. I am from the Netherlands and wintersowing is not common here but I like to try new things and it worked. Thanks for the video!

I love this modern version of gardening under glass cloches. As you have seen, the containers is only partially about the greenhouse effect. Today we protect seed starts by sharing our warm, well lit, (mostly) rodent free homes with them, but as you well know, the pests can show up there as well. Most plants can self seed just fine, but pests consume the bulk of seeds and seedlings. When growing under cloches was most popular, the homes of the farmers were not well lit, very warm or rodent free. Because of costs, I have experimented with translucent white buckets, dishpans and bus tubs as alternatives to clear containers. They work quite well, cost less and are more durable. This has made me wonder about building a full sized hoop house covered in horticultural fleece. This year I'm trying the white buckets indoors to protect overwintered peppers from mice, and outdoors to start cuttings.

I started a trial on tomatoes 3 days ago - when it was obviously not winter anymore, but very far from tomato-friendly temperatures. Covered trays in a plastic "greenhouse" - which is 4 shelves surrounded by plastic :) Tomatoes in the house sprouted in 2 days! :)

Just found you today, very interested in the final follow up of the different methods. I did winter sowing last year for the first time and it worked well, but if direct winter sowing has good results it sounds ideal.

About the lavender. Lavender needs frost, we mixed it with sand, put it in the freezer for a few days and then sown it. It grew very well. You could try sowing it in the ground in the fall and keeping it in during the frost period. It should grow normally in the spring. But birds like the green very much, it must be protected.

I think it really depends on what you're planting, my kale is huge already but its on it's second year. My Onions are huge and all need to come out before they decide to flower but my sets are all going in already.

We sowed our seeds a bit late this first year because we were out of the country for about 2 weeks, but it's exciting to see the little seedlings growing. I can't wait to plant the corn!

Hey Paul! How’s the weather been out there? It was pretty warm here last week (it’s back to normal this week), so I wonder if that sped up our initial germination.

So when will the video be out on "HOW TO KILL YOU PESTIES PESTS IN YOUR GARDEN" coming out? lol,lol,lol,lol,lol............. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Just want to blow the he** out of my garden this year. Not only do they breed like rabbits, they also know how to make an underground city of catacombs. If your not watching your feet or looking for burial plots within your boundary lines, you sure will break an ankle, knee, or a hip if your not prepared for your mission...... 😂😂😂😂😂😂 need your suit of armor on when tackling your own property. It's a tuff world out there & they'll eat you alive if your not in a defense position. Thanks for posting, you have a wonderful day, Chris from Missouri

Yeah, it was WAY warmer than normal last week. So that may have contributed to our fast germination. We’re back down into average temperatures now, with freezing over night, etc. We’ve even had a bit more snow since filming this video. So it will be a good test to see if these little sprouts survive…
