I took the same approach helping my dad plant on his larger 6 acres and it has made harvesting easier now that he is in his 70’s.

How are things in your neck of the woods? What a lovely set of varieties you guys have going. I'm kind of jealous, to tell you the truth. What a wonderful explanation on pruning, for compact growing. For a short tree, you need to start short. Select a smaller caliper tree, around 1/2 inch, and top it knee-high at planting. This will force lower branching and a lower fruiting canopy. Choose a size, and prune to keep it. Watch all our pruning videos, and you might what to read Backyard Orchard Culture on our website.

That's paint applied to protect young trees from sunburn. It's a good idea to paint the trunk of all fruit trees with indoor paint mixed 50/50 with water. Sunburn damage can lead to boring insect damage.

I am assuming you are using standard size trees. I have very little space to grow an orchard, so I bought 8 dwarf fruit trees. I planted 2 of each to pollinate each other for more fruit production. I have not pruned them yet and planted them last year, they are a at least 4ft tall. I am wondering if I can cut them down knee level like you did in this video. I want maximum fruit production.Your instructional video's are awesome!
@DaveWilsonTrees
@DaveWilsonTrees 7 жыл бұрын
I would not recommend a measured knee high cut. Work with the lowest scaffolding structure and cut back to three or four buds from the trunk. Then top off anything higher than your chosen scaffold structure. You mention two of each. I'm hoping you have two different varieties for pollination. Two of the same variety offers no benefit.

@DaveWilsonTrees
@DaveWilsonTrees 4 жыл бұрын
The white wash is a 50/50 mix of interior paint and water, to protect the young trees from sunburn. You can top as low as knee-high when planting, as long as the trees are not too old. Larger caliper peach and nectarine should not be topped as low.

My husband bought and planted several fruit trees for me along our fence line/brick wall in the back yard. He did not look at rootstock or think to make sure he was getting something in a dwarf/semi dwarf size. The result is that I now have several fruit trees back there on standard rootstock. I do NOT want 25 foot high trees back there. I want about an 8 foot tree height. We are backed onto a busy street (Herndon Ave here in Fresno) and 8 foot would be great to help block the noise and visual from the street and give us a more private yard. Can I control the growth and keep it that size even with the standard size rootstock? Or am I doomed to pull these newly planted trees and go buy new ones?
@DaveWilsonTrees
@DaveWilsonTrees 10 жыл бұрын
Semi-Dwarf will still grow a tree 16 to 18 feet tall. Your answer is summer pruning for size control. Ideally the trees should have been topped low at planting. But give them a good topping late spring and again late summer. Go to our website davewilson dotcom and read about Backyard Orchard Culture.

In this video, it appears that the small caliper persimmons are not cut knee high but maybe you trying to go as for rough speed cuts instead. For the persimmon tree, are we to prune it the same as other fruits twice a year (Other channels mention they are sensitive, doesnt like to be pruned often type trees)?
@summermoongarden
@summermoongarden 5 жыл бұрын
So I’m trying to understand your method here...so you prune it low 1 st time at planting then another heavy prune after summer...then leave it alone to fruit next year? So the two harsh hackings is what keep the tree to a manageable size for the life of the tree? I’m completely new to this and pruning that hard scares me!! 😳
@DaveWilsonTrees
@DaveWilsonTrees 5 жыл бұрын
The low cut at planting creates a low fruiting canopy. The yearly summer pruning controls final tree size. You will need to prune every year to keep your trees manageable. The first cut is hard, but will make for a much better tree, and you will not lose any fruiting time. The low fruiting canopy means fruit will set in reach as opposed to all over your head, which is what will happen if you plant a fruit tree and fail to prune it.

Dave Wilson Nursery At another comment you suggested not to prune to knee height. I bought 7 trees but do not know root stocks- all I know is they were bare root when the seller got them and he potted them. They broke dormancy but probably very recently. Their Canopies are higher than I would like. I can see some leaf buds lower down on the trunk, am I still safe to plant now (4/11) and prune back severely? I’m concerned the tree can’t support the top growth anyway and would like 1. Lower branching and 2. Focus put on roots. I am zone 8b/9a depending on the map 😉 and our temps are 70-80/50-65 right now

If you can dig a hole, the roots will do the rest. No need to amend the soil with anything, but it is very wise to cover the root area of the soil with a good layer of mulch.

My timeline is really open to whatever works for you. The basics are summer prune for size control and winter or in your case early spring prune for detail. Just use that as a guideline. Remember you are not a farmer. You do not have to follow a schedule. The best advise I can give you is make it fit your schedule. The only bad day to prune is when weather does not permit outdoor work. Have fun with it. Make it a family project so everyone feels a sense of accomplishment when they eat fresh tree ripe fruit. Thanks for the kind words on the videos. Tom

Yes, it works with pear. It’s best with smaller caliper bare root trees. Older, larger caliper trees, especially peach or nectarine you need to be careful, only top as low as the lowest limb or obviously active bud.

North facing spot against wooden fence 6 feet ( full Sun) 2. North East corner spot partly shaded by Colour bound Garage, and gets 5-6 hrs Sun in Summers and 3-4 hrs in winter. Can you please advise/guide me which 2 trees will be best planted in ground and at which spot is best for which tree as per planting locations mentioned above ? @DaveWilsonTrees 10 жыл бұрын
I would plant the plum and peach in the 48 sq. ft. Give each half of the available space. Save the shade area for some ornamental. Fruit will not be productive with that much shade. Put the Lapins Cherry in the half barrel in a sunny location. Make sure you use a fast draining sandy potting mix in the barrel and bore at least 8 - 1 1/2" holes in the bottom for very good drainage.
