Well to be fair this is 8 channel version for modded Atari with double Pokey chip. There is also 4 channel version, and most of the stuff is there, but this one is better.

Not on youtube AFAIK .. but if you get the demo (link in the description), and run it in any Atari or emulator without stereo mod, the 4 channel version will play. For PC I suggest www.virtualdub.org/altirra.html

Checked the SMS version again .. and it's pretty good. The video is crazy good, but I don't know the memory limitations. And the music is quite nice. It has lots of small details I so love about the song. It just seems to have troubles keeping speed. Maybe they are trying to interpolate the correct speed ? Which is problem I had to solve too, and I did it by actually slowing down the video by 2%.

Just spent too much time watching other bad apples.. this is easily the best 8bit version. better than NES and C64 and of course light-years ahead of zx spectrum and apple ii. and yet only the apple ii is and older design..

Excellent response BTW. I didn't know about the 'linear bitmap framebuffer mode' on the Atari, thanks for writing this!. Very interesting on the character mode vs bitmap mode differences also for the A8. A comment on the Z80 -- the Z80 can handle more complex math operations than the 6502 although straight up -- the 6502 can handle significantly more instructions per clock on average. 0.43 MIPS/mhz (Dhrystone) vs. 0.145 for the Z80. That means the A8 can in theory do up to ~ 0.77 MIPS (NTSC clock), vs. ~0.51 MIPS for the Z80 @ 3.5 MHz. They're probably in the same ballpark real world, although in some cases the Atari CPU might actually be able to do more.

Don't diss CGA too hard. People just don't understand it's full capabilities. Or remember what actual CGA cards were like - they only remember CGA emulation on later cards, which is only partial emulation. Things CGA can do: - 4 colour RGB modes in 3 different colour palettes (what everyone remembers about it) at 320x200 - 16 colour RGB mode at 160x102 - Rarely used, but it existed - 16 colour composite mode, with an entirely different colour set to the RGB mode. Many games designed with ACTUAL cga adapters in mind use this mode. Maniac Mansion for instance. Graphically it's basically the same as EGA. But you have to hook your computer up to a TV instead of a computer monitor to use this. And no later card supports it. Hacks of composite mode can display about 2000 simultaneous colours. Still, the real key to the PC no matter the era (at least, prior to 3d accelerators) is the CPU. - Starting with an 8 mhz 16 bit CPU, and just getting faster and faster from there. Doom was possible not because VGA cards are anything special (they're not), but because a 32 bit CPU running at 30-100 mhz or more can simply calculate so much data that redrawing the entire screen 35 times a second and doing complex maths along the way is something you can actually get away with.

The Atari 800 was in many ways the most technologically superior PC of its generation. I got mine for Christmas 1981 or 1982, can't remember which. I still have it.

Wow, this is nice. The scanline effect is interesting in that you'd have like double scanlines if you were watching it on a CRT. Wouldn't be the only low res thing intended for CRT that has that going on, though.

The C64 had more severe hardware limitations imposed, along with the demo forcing a single sided disk to be used, which offers much less storage than was used here. The audio desync in the C64 was caused by the demo running on different speeds than what the visuals were made for (PAL C64s' soundtracks run at 80% speed from the NTSC versions).

atari 8 bit forever! Power without the price! I bet this demo fits on a single disc and where can I download it to run on my 800xl! Atari computers were always just better, especially the 8 bit ones and then the ST came along and integrated midi lol and atari computers can read pc discs even the 8 bit ones can, and st uses same format as pc but different file type same with their 8 bit machines, it's same as a single sided 180k IBM disc just not compatible files on it but it makes writing files to disc super easy!

This is pretty impressive. Though the version that streams audio off a cassette tape has it beat for amusement factor. I mean, it's totally a cheat, but how many other systems can you think of that could stream audio off a tape? XD I mean, I call it a cheat, but it's basically the same concept as CD Audio in games. All those CD based consoles where the ingame audio is literally just audio tracks from a CD are doing the same thing as the Atari is with tapes, just... With the benefit of random access support. (which reminds me, a CD or DVD drive for the Atari could do some fascinating things with audio. - kinda makes me wanna build a SATA interface for the system. I mean, I know there's an IDE interface available already, but... Anyway... XD)

it does! on the crusty 800! graphics but no sound lol I guess this is 800 vs xl differences and I have to work out wtf is going on, on my stereo xl yeah it's perfect and looks way better than on youtube on a CRT monitor, it looks nice on an xl800 :)

Yes, this one uses lot bigger cartridge, and audi from tape data recorder, which is neat. And there is also 4th version, for Rapidus and VBXE. And possibly even 5th ? There was something in SillyVenture 2018 wild compo, don't know the details though.

@@DrSid42 I suppose if you're hardcore enough, you could make a cartridge big enough to hold uncompressed frames that you could point the display list to and then use all the CPU time on a HQ digital soundtrack. :)

64kB is enough, and 2nd pokey is optional, not needed. You need the cartridge obviously.
