Hi again Mick. Yes I've been going to the races since I was a kid. A relative of mine use to race a wooden hull with a glass deck, which had a pretty quick holden 6 in it. The interest grew from there I guess. I can remember going to the races at Glenmaggie and Paynesville and there would be two or three rows deep of people along the bank watching the boats. If you crewed on the Mexican at Glenmaggie for AB, you were probably there the day we lost Bill Davis. It showed the difference between an Aries and a BBC. That was a very sad day. I became involved with the drag boats as well. I crewed on She's the Piece for Frank Bodzioni from Sydney with Tony Jowett driving. We set the record at Patterson Lakes with a run of 186mph. Good days. Thanks for getting in touch, it's good to go back over the years of racing. Al C.

A good bit of footage here. With Brian McCosker (no longer with us) his boat Liberty, was certainly a force in Australian boat racing. Good to see Chris Palmer (he's a crayfisherman) in Outlaw from Tasmania. Whenever Chris would come over to any of our races, he'd bring some crays with him.

And yes, it is Melton reservoir. Great spot for tuning the engine, heaps of air as the area is actually below sea level. We raced there (Paul McNally driving Psycho) and ran against Bob Thurgar when he was driving 'Chevy Chase'. We'd won the main race for the day, which was the 'Melton Cup'. After the presentations, the club asked if we'd be interested in running in a match (grudge) race against Bob, because 'Psycho Marine' & 'Chevy Chase' were the main 'quick' boats on the day. It was decided that the race was on, so into the water with the two boats. Bob knows a few tricks, from racing so many years and would make sure that he had the inside run into each turn. After reviewing video footage of the race, we saw that 'Psycho' was copping a 'hose down' at every turn. This put quite a bit of water into the hull, which ended up acting like a counter weight. When Paul steered into the turn at the top end of the course, the water in the boat (counter weight) shifted to one side and flipped the boat. Blew most of the front deck off, broke the stern off and the boat went to the bottom. Melton reservoir is about 200 feet deep. Seeing as the race was an 'extra' to the card for the day (mainly put on for the fairly large crowd) the Melton Club graciously paid for the salvage of the boat. We retrieved the engine, but the boat was history. We pulled the engine down, threw in some new pieces and put it into a brand new hull. It was a day I'll never forget.

Bloody hell, Al. How did I miss this comment? It should have gone in my Android as 'New posts'. But thanks for telling me about Alan Beale living in Queensland. I did a couple or so years with him as a pitman, launching both the Mexican which he drove and his two models Stephens boats Mandy drove in races at Lakes Glenmaggie and Nillahcootie between between 88 and 91. Then I had my own boat, a Salem purchased from Alan and lost interest in working for him. I've always liked boats and races and those nasty V8's. Everyone was a friendly community of racers and followers. Cheers Al.

To Mick Carson. The Mexican was a Cole hull. Alan Beale (Stephens Boats/Psycho Marine) raced it for awhile. We pulled the motor out of it, it was a 511cui BBC. Used some of the parts in The Howling. We (Paul McNally & myself) went on to run Alan Beale's Psycho (Stephens 21' V-Bottom) with a 486cui BBC for him. The good ol' days. Nothing like the sound of a blown big block, idling over on the blower. Al Carley.

+Al Carley Hello Al. How did I miss your comment? Sorry about that. Yes, I know about Bealy. I used to help him in the pits at Lake Glemaggie, Nillahcootie and a lake near Melton, was it Melton reservoir? I can't remember, it's like 28 years ago. He sold me a Salem boat with a 350 v8 of which I still have today and the engine is hardly used. Do you know what happened to Alan? Is he still with his wife Amanda? Does he still have the boat business that he had in Bayswater? Mick.

+david garton You're right David. The only serious drag racing incident I remember was in Lake Glenmaggie, I think in 89 where one of the fastest aquaplane to hit 250mph was named Tinker Toy and racing against a lower class boat, The Mexican. Tinker Toy released the parachute too early after the liquid quarter mile and skyrocketed straight into the air because all that water spray from the rear of the boat filled the parachute and pulled the boat skyward and landing upside down, with a huge impact, boat on the driver. He died from internal injuries by the time they brought him to the shore. There are some risks in boating and one of them is the use of parachutes, they fill with water when released.

In reply to this late comment, yes, it was at Lake Glenmaggie in 89, even I no longer remember the weekend that happened in February '89. I had actually made a comment on how the incident happened. I was there that weekend with Beale and Mandy helping them launch their boats. Alan was racing against Tinker Toy, a much powerful and faster orange coloured boat. If that parachute hadn't been there, that boat would have broken the record for it's class. Disaster struck and in 1989 I wrote a memoir of that dreadful day. The boat flew very high as the parachute had filled with all water spray which quickly pulled the boat and landed flat upside down, crushing the driver. Everyone was saddened because the driver died after being rescued but couldn't be lifted in the boat due to a broken back and other injuries, so they had no choice but to drag him beside a rescue boat until they reached the ground where paramedics were waiting. It took at least 10-12 minutes to reach the area because boat wakes would cause more pain. The poor man, left in the cold water for too long died by the shoreline and was then carried to the ambulance soon after, watched by many. From my 'Memoirs of Victorian Drag Boat Racing days - the Lake Glenmaggie Incident. February 1988-91. MAC'.

How I miss boat racing and all the guys from the Drag boat Club of Victoria. Bloody old age. Does anyone still remember 'The Mexican' from Psycho Marine in the late 80?

Hi Mick. A.B. is out of the business now and I believe he's living in Qld. I haven't heard any different, so I imagine he and Mandy are still together. Take it easy Al C.

Bit of a shock to see my step brothers fatal crash at 1.08 Min from fathers day 1991 at Windsor. I was the last person to speak to him as I pushed the boat off the trailer.
