Bubby is a man-child kept locked his entire life in a squalid apartment by a depraved mother. But when Bubby, who can communicate by mimicking what others say and do escapes into the outside and he soon discovers the wonders of sex, crime, rock & roll and pizza! Will this mad bastard be destroyed by the realities of our cruel world or does a higher calling ultimately await him in the most unlikely places of all?
There were 32 different Directors of Photography during the shoot. The idea was to have a different D.P. for every new place that Bubby went to not only give the film more of an experimental feel, but also to eliminate the worry of having to always have the same crew on set every day.
Most of the sound was recorded by two binaural microphones hidden in actor Nicholas Hope's ears.
The entire movie was shot in sequence. This made it easier for Bubby to mimic previous characters' dialogue since he had a chance to hear it performed first.

This is my fav arthouse movie. Being locked down in his home due to a fake disease is most applicable today.

You completely skipped over the part where he met the priest and he tells Bubby that there is no God. That was the real turning point of the movie, after that he tried to be nice to the stray cat and grew the conscience he always had in him.

It's weird. Most Aussies take this as a funny movie whereas americans are all serious about it lol. This is a cult classic down here.

Saw it this week, I appreciate the recap and the insights! :) I really enjoyed the way Bubby dealt with religious criticism, considering that he must have faced a lot of religious trauma throughout his life. It was subtle, but it was there. Definitely not a pretty movie per se, but worth checking out :)
