I think you are on a winner if you do. Worked for a furniture manufacturer for 16 years and it was the only brand we worked with. And the range of products is pretty large, be that for band sanders up to 10ft wide belt and 30ft long. Up to small cushions for those hard to reach places. Even now, as a pensioner, it is the only paper I use. SIA abrasives only, oh and sure, wood, and epoxy need a slightly different one, as do metals. They got you covered aswell.

Have you tried the sandpaper nets from Mirka? We use Abranet 40 and 80 grid for literally everything. Love those. Minimum dust, perfect results. Lifespan is also good and it doesn't get clogged like normal sandpapers. Since it's a net, you don't need to put it on exactly in the right position so that the holes align. Sibply bc there are no holes 😂

Thanks 🙏. Yes, a solid deck has some advantages. Water resistance being one of the biggies. The weight penalty is a bit of an issue but if the boat is well designed I’d say go for it. 👍👍

As always, a great video! It’s refreshing to see the details of the demo-and-repair process, as opposed to the “magical montage” where everything is suddenly “fixed”. Of course there always needs to be some in streaming vids. But for hopeful seafarers such as myself, the little details matter. Besides, I have to wonder if it appeals to every sailors’ little closet masochist-as painful as it may be, there’s a measure of satisfaction in tearing into a boat, only to discover a critical problem, and then slightly (or excessively) over-spec the solution! Thank you so much for all you do!!!

I actually opened up the bulwark after their visit (the magic of editing knows no limits!) so he's only seen it in pictures but he has kindly offered his opinion (they are a very kind and generous couple) and we will see about sharing that someway in the future.

When filling holes in the deck like that, I find it is always better to fill a syringe and squirt the thinker epoxy into the hole. That way you can move the tip of the syringe around to make sure no air bubbles get trapped in the bottom of the hole. It is also easier to get the thicken epoxy into the syringe if you put it in a thick ziplock bag, cut the corner a bit and then squeeze it into the syringe.

I built a Shearwater 39 in the middle 1990's and this look like the same type of deck hull joint and the builder used plywood too fill the void between the hull and deck. I removed it before fitting the caps.

I'm surprised you didn't ask Maya and Aladino about your bulwarks. That was the major reason for their refit and rebuild of their Cape George 36 cutter. It was the rot of their wooden bulwarks that made them replace their deck beams. They replaced their wood bulwarks with high density foam.

I didn't open up the bulwarks until after their visit otherwise I would have! The bulwarks on the Cape George are a little different, but I've enjoyed watching their work on those. Aladino did scramble up onto the bow to investigate my work on getting the area prepped for new core and said it was "perfect" so that is a moment that I wish I had on film!!! Haha.

@@livingforsail Getting that kind of approval must reassure you. Aladino knows his stuff. I hope you don’t have to replace your bulwarks from stem to stern like they did. That is a big job. But if they are rotten, now is the time to do it. I love both your boats. A couple of classic yachts that are meant for blue water. Can't wait for your next episode.

Loved the vid man. You’re channel must’ve come across my feed because I follow magic carpet. I might be one of the few people who don’t live near water and have never sailed but love watching y’all sail and refit boats. I’m looking forward to checking out more of what you’re up to. Something I love to share with those that I come in contact with is how to get to heaven. God is specific about this. It doesn’t happen by accident or osmosis or by heredity. Since He’s the creator, and it’s His heaven, He gets to make the rules. The rules He gives us to live by, the moral law, are the 10 commandments and we all fall short here. Do you want to know for sure you’ll make it? Are you going to heaven? Most people would say that they’ve been good enough to get into heaven. Would you pass the test? Let’s take a quick look! 1. How many lies have you told in your whole life? 2. Have you ever stolen anything no matter how little the value? 3. Ever had lust for someone who wasn’t your spouse or sex outside of marriage? 4. Ever used the Lord’s name in vain (like OMG)? These are just a few of the 10 Commandments and if you answered yes to these questions that would make YOU like the rest of US. Jesus took the punishment we deserve on the cross (1 Peter 2:24). If we believe and put our trust in Him, we too can have eternal life in heaven (Acts 16:31). Repent (which means turn from your sins and not live the life of a hypocrite) and TRUST Jesus today! A great place to begin reading the Bible is the gospel of John, found between Luke and Acts. Don’t make the same mistake I used to make and think that God will “know your heart” and that “you’re basically a good person” and He’ll give you a pass. It’s like this: a guy robs a bank and a few years down the road gets caught and then he stands in court and tells the judge, “judge I promise not to rob any more banks and I’m contributing to society now. I feed the homeless and give to charities and help little old ladies across the street…”. The judge is going to tell him good for you, you should be doing good things in society and not robbing banks but I’m still sending you to prison because you have to pay the penalty for your crime. It will be the same for us at judgement with God. The good things we do will not erase the sins we’ve committed. Our sentence will be according to our crimes and we won’t make it to heaven on our account. It’s all of Jesus and none of us. “Jesus *said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” ‭‭John‬ ‭14‬:‭6‬

Great videos of your project. I too have a Liberty458 built in 1984 and have replaced the teak deck and balsa core in many places. I also found the deck seam failed on the foreword section of the deck and had to glass it together and replace the rail. I’m wondering what you will do about the water in the bullworks? Fair winds

Thank you! 🙏 cool to meet another liberty owner (I’ve met a few since starting this journey) That’s a great question! Do you know if you have mild steel inside your bulwarks? I’m 99% sure I have stainless steel but I know some earlier boats had mild steel. Most of the advice I’ve gotten about the bulwarks is seal them up and leave them alone. I’m very tempted to rip in but it’s a lot of work for minimal reward. I live in a climate with freeze/thaw but if it was always warm here I’d seriously consider leaving them alone… we will see I guess! 🙌👍

I just always say "two years" when I'm asked this. I've been saying this for 18 months already when I moved the boat onto the driveway! Things always take longer like you said. My wife has found it helpful to "adjust" my estimates when I give her timelines by doubling the number and incrementing the unit of time. So a "2 day" job she expects will take me 4 weeks and then everyone is happy... If you check out the first part of the story it should answer your other questions ;) Thanks for stopping by!

Grinder with flap disc. I tried an orbital with 60 grit, no joy, grinder with flap disc, YES. Down side, dust control but maybe there are grinders with proper dust control. That bulwark holds many opportunities,

Yeah, from my experience with those flapper wheels it would be very quick but that orbital in turbo mode removes a lot more material than a traditional orbital and you get the benefit of some dust extraction. I should fire up the grinder just to compare speeds maybe 🤔

I like using a grinder and 36 flap disk with a dust shroud for quickly removing glass. A lot cheaper than chewing thru sand paper in turbo mode. Try using 36 or 40 in turbo mode for quick removal👍

Wouldn’t it make sense to check out all the coring so that your repair is fully continuous and consistent. This is what Aladino did on Magic Carpet.

I might consider doing larger sections. Aladino’s boat has wooden beams that support the deck and even there he had to start with removing every second beam in order to keep the deck shape. I have a similar issue that if I take all the core and top skin at once the bottom skin may not keep shape. I could spend more time bracing from below… everything is give and take.
