***CORRECTION: Concho is not a Coquí; he’s a Puerto Rican crested toad, locally known as Sapo Concho. That’s actually where his name comes from! Unfortunately, this species is endangered due to habitat loss and the introduction of foreign species that threaten its survival.
Bad Bunny’s Debí Tirar Más Fotos is a cultural statement, a love letter to Puerto Rico, and a bold fight against gentrification and cultural erasure. In this video, we break down how DTMF reflects Bad Bunny’s personal journey, his activism, and his mission to preserve Puerto Rican identity in the face of globalization and change.
In this video, we break down the album’s themes, the emotional short film that accompanies it, and how Bad Bunny uses DTMF to fight against gentrification and the erasure of his homeland’s culture.
What we’ll cover:
The deeper meaning behind Debí Tirar Más Fotos
How Bad Bunny reflects on memory and identity through his music
The short film’s powerful commentary on gentrification in Puerto Rico
Emotional TikTok reactions and their connection to the album

As a Puerto Rican living in Puerto Rico, this album is literally everywhere. Every teacher has done some assignment of analyzing it or has played pieces of the album during class. In my English class, we had a little listening party of it too. This album is so good and I love how Bad Bunny experiments with diferent Latin genres, makes me proud of my Puerto Rican identity. DTMF is easily his best album.

@@saucey2470 Yes, but in high school. In elementary/middle school, they teach about Taínos mostly. I'm in 10th grade rn and we started learning about it rn, probably my favorite piece of history ever. And we do sometimes analyze stories and songs about el Grito de Lares and stuff. It is very controversial because Puerto Rico's status is really controversial here. Everytime a teacher does it some PNP (The people who believe in statehood) or Popular (people who believe to stay as territory) walks out murmuring of the class even though you cant erase history.

great video. you seems to really understand nuestra lucha/our struggle. just as a little note: Concho is not a coquí. he is a sapo concho (literally Concho toad). a species endemic to the island that unfortunately is under threat of extinction. it's a lot bigger than the diminutive coquí. and one of things on the short film that hit us hard is the cup that Don Jacobo use to drink his coffee. it's a cup of butter. when you finish the butter just use the cup as a taza de café. it comes in varios colors. I'm 51 and I was born in the country side of the islad in a finca de café (mi grandfather was a farmer and methodist minister)... when i was a kid everyone and their grandma's had them cups at home. especially the poor working families. in my abuelas house those were the every day cups for the family. maybe there was a set of good china for visitors or guest. ... sorry for the rant y gracias for your understanding and the respect showed for the situation. thanks.

Thank you so much for your kind words and for sharing such a heartfelt note. It means a lot to hear your perspective, especially coming from someone with such deep ties to the island and its history. I really appreciate the clarification about Concho! Knowing he’s a sapo concho and not a coquí adds an even deeper layer to his significance in the story-especially with the species being so unique and endangered. It’s a beautiful and bittersweet detail. And your words about the butter cup - thank you for sharing! Hearing how something so simple carries so much history and meaning, especially for families like yours, makes that moment in the film even more powerful. Thank you for sharing your memories so openly. It gives me even more appreciation for the richness of Puerto Rican culture and the struggles you’ve mentioned. Much respect to you and your family, and again, thank you for taking the time to share this with me. ❤️

As a puertorican who was displaced due to economic and educational difficulties ❤🇵🇷I have to correct you with much love and respect. CONCHO IS NOT A COQUI. The Puerto Rican Crested Toad (El sapo concho) is beautiful yet endangered species found only in Puerto Rico. The symbolism is that us, The native Puerto Ricans that have not yet immigrated, are ALSO ENDANGERED just like our Sapo 🐸 Concho 💓

Amazing work! I hope this blows up, you deserve it. I saw people mention the correction on the Sapo Concho, but Id like to add a really important note about why its facing extinction: The main reason is the loss of habitat, and that comes not just from the impact of human construction and deforestation - but because of an invasive species. The "common frong" in PR thats not native to the island takes the Concho's 'nests' making it their own. Concho is a metaphor for the puertoricans in the island unable to find housing in their own land due to the gentrification and housing crisis. Even people who have the money to cover the high costs are facing discrimination when trying to buy homes, there's a preference for foreign buyers by realtors. An actor Ismael Cruz even spoke on how he had to have a foreing friend call in his place in order to get responses from relators in PR. We are all living in Concho's shoes.

Ah, I'm so sad I missed this. It's an excellent piece of context. I love how every choice BB made in this album makes a statement about what's happening in PR. It deepens the meaning in the film too with Jacobo's character talking to a frog that mirrors the experience that he's going through himself.

As a Puerto Rican, I’ve never listened to Bad Bunny. Your video showed up randomly in my feed and I am truly grateful it did. I stopped to listen to it and thank you so sincerely for creating this video. Like others who have commented here, I cried throughout your commentary. It awakened my love for my homeland and its culture. It brought back nostalgia to the things I forgot that makes us who we are and how fleeting it is to forget. I so appreciate that your commentary has reawakened this commitment to stand with Bad Bunny to not allow our culture to die. I would have never paid attention to his music but through your commentary to explain his work, I am going to support this album. It’s beautiful how you spoke so eloquently. You articulated truths we need to remember. There’s an intangible connection all Puerto Ricans share about our homeland and we must remember not to let modern culture erode our history and cultural beauty. Thank you for taking the time to connect us with these truths we needed to hear. Your video has been eye opening to many of us who were not aware of this important message Bad Bunny delivered. It’s given a voice to us to stop and listen to this timely message. Thank you for caring enough to share this video with the world. I pray all Puerto Ricans will see it and stand together to preserve our culture. Blessings 🙏

Actually, the "act of Rebellion joyride" part didn't actually happen, it's conveyed as him imagining himself in that scenario, as Concho the Concho Frog asks him "Why don't you do that also?" to which he imagines the scenario and the happiness he'd feel, but then back in reality, he dismisses the notion. Instead of a wholesome joyride, it's actually more of a melancholic moment of thought, that serves as a bittersweet reference to the mindset alot of Puerto Rican elderly tend to have. See as young we're down to blast music, but as we get older we end up not doing such things out of respect for the friends and family in our neighborhood, but also due to the familiarity of it, we don't mind much when someone else drives through the neighborhood blasting the very same music because it reminds us of those earlier years and the fond memories, hence why we fondly remember it as the sounds of the Island. There's nothing wrong with this mindset, but it does unfortunately play a role in the loss of our culture as the young are forced out of the island, and the old don't always have the same energy to do stuff like that at times. So yeah, sorry to burst the bubble but yeah, a common trend with the album as a whole is a feeling of nostalgia and melancholy, and this permeates through to the short film as well to convey the unified sadness we as a people feel for the loss of our culture, but also the unified feeling of warmth and comfort in our nostalgia. With all that said, thank you for this video, and the research you've done to make sure to be accurate. It shows alot of respect towards our struggle and from that I have a ton of respect for you too friend. Also out of all the American analysis videos and stuff about the album, this is the most accurate one I've seen so far. Most miss massive details. So yeah, thank you for this, greatly, y que Dios te bendiga (may God bless you.)

@Afrodizjha 11 күн бұрын
This is such a beautifully written and insightful response-thank you for sharing this perspective. I really appreciate the clarification about that scene and how it reflects a deeper, more bittersweet reality rather than just a simple act of rebellion. The way you described the shift from youthful freedom to the quiet nostalgia of older generations is so powerful, and it adds an entirely new layer of meaning to that moment. It’s heartbreaking but also deeply moving how the album and short film capture that unified sadness for what’s being lost, while also celebrating the warmth of shared memories. That balance of melancholy and comfort is something that really resonates. And honestly, your kind words mean so much. I wanted to approach this with as much care and respect as possible, and knowing that it felt accurate and thoughtful to you means everything. Thank you for taking the time to share your insights and experiences-it adds so much depth to the conversation. Y que Dios te bendiga también. 💜

I was 3 years old when my family and I immigrated from Costa Rica to NY, and I finally went back to CR after 28 years of being away from home after finally getting my green card and the privilege to travel back home. I had an amazing family waiting for me who threw a huge reunion/homecoming party. I was there for 8 days and didn’t want to leave when it was time to come back. This was wonderful, thank you for amazing analysis. As a Puerto Rican, this album makes me cry, dance and feel like I'm back home with my loved ones. It's truly a love letter to Puerto Rico that resounds with other colonized/marginalized communities that are loosing their homeland and communities to modern colonizers. Just one note: Concho the frog in the movie is not our coqui. It's true that el Coqui is an emblematic symbol for Puerto Ricans (I have one tattooed on my wrist), but "Concho" is a Sapo Concho another species of frog that is endemic to the island and is in danger of extinction due to disforestation and environment destruction. He in a way symbolize Puerto Ricans as sapos conchos in danger of existence in the island as well as our memories and "Puertoricaness". I have to commend you for the amazing research you did to learn and understand the messages and realities we Boricuas have to face everyday. I'm definitely subscribing to your channel because it was so good!

Thank you so much for the kind words! You’ve made such an excellent point about Concho, and I’m actually considering doing a follow-up to correct what I said-details like that matter, and I want to get it right! Colonization isn’t dead; it’s just had a rebrand, and that really hits home for me. As I dug deeper into the album and everything Bad Bunny is expressing, I couldn’t help but think about what’s happening in my own country, Zambia. The overlaps between the struggles of oppressed people around the world are so striking-it’s a shared pain that connects us in profound ways. I feel like so much of the meaning in this album is being overlooked or lost on a lot of English speakers, so I just wanted to do my part to help amplify the message. Thank you again for your thoughtful response-it means a lot! ❤️

10:25 Sapo concho is not a Coqui. It's a Puerto Rican crested toad (Peltophryne lemur), or simply Puerto Rican toad, is a species of toad found only in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. It is listed as a threatened by the US Fish and Wildlife Service due to habitat loss and introduced species. At one period of time it was believed to be extinct until it was rediscovered in 1966. I feel so torn about this. My grandmother left Puerto Rico as a young woman due to economic hardship and eventually met my African American grandfather. Since then my family has been proudly black but I have always tried to hold onto my full heritage. I’ve been learning Spanish (specifically focusing on the PR dialect) because I’ve dreamt of moving to the island. However, since the connection I have to the last passed away twenty years ago, I don’t want any action I take to be viewed as that of an gentrifier. Of course I’ll be an outsider but I don’t want to add to struggles.
@Afrodizjha
@Afrodizjha 12 сағат бұрын
Your identity is yours, and no one can take that away from you or define it for you. You are both Black and Puerto Rican, and you don’t have to choose between them. You are honoring your heritage by embracing all of who you are-learning the language, understanding the culture, and reconnecting with the island in your own way. It’s understandable to worry about being seen as an outsider, but you are not a gentrifier for wanting to connect with your roots. Puerto Rico is in your blood, in your history, in your family’s journey. You are not claiming something that isn’t yours-you are reclaiming something that has always belonged to you. Identity is not about proximity-it’s about intention. If you approach the island with respect, humility, and a desire to learn, you are not adding to the struggles; you are reconnecting with a place that is already a part of you. No one can take that away. 💛🏝✨

Thank you so freaking much for making this video!! Puerto Rican and academic here... I have been debating on how much to go in depth translating the deeper meanings and subtext of this amazing multimedia project to my English speaking friends, colleagues, and community. It is exhausting, especially with the visceral political landscape in both Puerto Rico and the mainland right now. There are sooo many carefully construed details in the entire project and subtle meanings such as the pastry without filling in the short movie (a Puerto Rico without Puerto Ricans). More than gentrification, it is blatant settler colonialism. Benito purposefully chose Hawaii for comparison, not due to what is happening now, but on how they became a state in the first place through massive displacement of the local population in the early 20th century. He also has an overt call for independence from the US at the end of the album. There is so much there. So much more. Thank you for this, I just shared your video with all of my friends.

The colonial status of Puerto Rico is absolutely criminal and continues to be the root of so many of its struggles. Puerto Rico deserves freedom and true independence. It’s heartbreaking to see how long this fight has gone on and how much resilience the people of PR continue to show in the face of injustice. With Trump in office, I'm really scared for the future.

@@AfrodizjhaThat is not easy as you think as not all boricuas are into independence as they are more pro statehood and thinks indepence would lead us to ruins or be a comunists state just like Cuba. It is true the independence sentiment has grown considerably and Independent party had more vote than ever before but like always they lost the majority of vote. Usually , the parties that always the elections were Democratic Popular Party ( Red with a symbol of a jibaro man with strawman hat) and New Progressive Party ( blue with a palm as a symbol). The PPD were more to stay in the current status and PNP is more into trying to archieve the statehood even with some failure of doing. Currently , the Party that is greatly in power is PNP with the Gov. JGO with some dissident representa on the cameras of represents. Also the sentiments of boricuas are divided with boricuas wanting independence and other statehood. Some are more right wing and other left wings. My case as a boricua. I do not think independence/ statehood is the main focus yet as we need to fight the corruption here, lots badly designed infraestructura, the dept. The whole structures of Puerto Rico whether it is political , infractacture, economical, energy efficiency , knowledge of the culture , care of nature, companies , jobs propects , fertility rates are badly handled, badly decided by their voters who did not read pr thinks through voting and makes the same mistakes. We are country of inneficiency , mediocrity, corruption, with a bad education system and not good at taking of our nature. Yes , USA did bad things to us but I think we have badly the blame for voting the same things over the years and having a selective amnesia when it come to voting and make the same mistakes and whines about afterwards. That why I don't see us improving as country with that sort of actitudes and mentality. I might sound harsh here but that is how really feel about this whole thing.😊

Your breakdown of this album was beautiful. Gentrification is an incredibly sensitive matter. I’m from New Jersey, my old neighborhood used to have corner stores and now there are people jogging there. I saw the same thing in Panama, luxury apartments but the locals cannot afford them. So many people are flocking to Vietnam and Thailand to go get apartments, but it’s the same matter..most local people can’t afford to live there. Instead of enjoying a different culture we are colonizing.

As a Puerto Rican who's family left before I was born I LIVE seeing all kinds of diasporas feeling seen buy bad bunnies music, and the traditional Puerto Rican sounds. "Seguimos aqui" (we are still here) I think is a call to all diasporas grieving the stories of a home that are both familiar and alien. And conchito is actually not a coqui, he is the sapo concho that was thought to be extinction from the island of Puerto rico but was rediscovered in 1966. So he is an added layer of the narrative of "the world may move on and even forget me, but seguimos aqui."

As someone born and raised in America and is now an adult, I feel that disconnection with Dominican culture every time I visit Santo Domingo or even in America with some of my own family (especially of the older generations) as I don’t even speak very fluent Spanish. It could be because of gentrification in America as well. However, I didn’t notice gentrification in Santo Domingo the recent times I’ve visited. So this is more prevalent in PR I assume.

I am not a fan of the musical delivery of the genre, but I have huge respect for the socio-political odyssey and statement that this monumental piece makes. To rewind a bit: Bad Bunny composed a song and sang it on international TV while wearing a dress to sing about the outrage all we Puerto Ricans should have felt when Alexa, a young trans woman waas murdered. Our outrage was MIA, except that BB put it in our collective faces. Thank you, Benito.

This was a great piece that gave me some perspective on PR. I have a coworker that becomes extremely emotional when songs from this album play. I thought outside investment would help the island’s development but never really understood the story of the island and how the people there became impoverished. It seems like a similar transition to other US industrialized cities that fell hard when major companies outsourced to other countries. My question is, what can be done? It seems there was quite a bit of corruption on the island where essentially locals took money to make others vulnerable. What can one do and how can I show empathy to my coworker? She seems always triggered and never in the mood to explain what she feels or what can be done to help and she detests the Paul brothers.

Hey great work with the vid. Just wanted to clarify that the “sapo concho” or concho frog is actually a different breed of frog to that of the coqui. The coqui is usually used as its the natural symbol for us Puerto Ricans but I do think it says a lot that instead of going with the expected , he went for perhaps a more obscure representation of Puerto Rican heritage and culture. One that perhaps doesn’t get as much light to his brother counterpart. Anyhow, still great vid!
