Ouch! As they say, the best laid plans of mice and men... I'm just really glad that none of you got hurt in the process! It would be nice if the insurance covers it, but I wouldn't count on it. They always manage to find a reason not to, and even if they do, they'll just raise your rates because you made a claim. That's what they do so that they don't "lose" any money in the long run. In the meantime, I hope that little smack on the edge of the roof didn't break the seal enough to allow water to slowly leak into the house. That could end up being worse than you might think.

You are correct on that, insurance companies never lose. We are going to replace that shingle when I get off again

Only thing i think could had been done better with the available equipment is supporting the log closer to the tree until the limbs over the roof were cleared.
