I wonder if the player killing everyone with a wish was his way of getting the DM called out on his BS. Giving everyone else a reason to hate that DM is a good way to make sure they don't give him a chance to do it again.

This sort of Epic Campaign leads people to be competitive, and being the only table left standing is a good way to make sure you won. So I don't think he did it to get back at the DM, it was just a pleasant side effect.

@FlashRebel Not in a multi-group game where there are a large number of other DMs, all of whom have some idea of how the game is meant to go. If the armour wasn’t used in other games being played and hadn’t been okayed by the other DMs, they would say remove it. The point of competitive D&D is that all groups face the same potential dangers. And even in a normal group you can point out to the other players that something is amiss, see their reactions and work from there. DMs do not have ultimate power unless you let them. A DM cannot DM without a group, so if they start causing trouble you just have convince other players maybe it’s not worth the headache trying to work with that DM.

Now, I haven't seen the Deck of Many Things used personally, but I know Online, it comes with a warning. *"Caution: Use at Your Own and Everyone Else's Risk. Such Effects Include (But are Not Limited to):* *Players getting Multiple Wishes* *An Avatar of Death itself coming to kill a PC* *Levels/EXP Being Lost* *Summoning of Powerful High Level Monsters* *The Players getting a Monster Invested Keep* *And so many more that can ruin the Campaign you had planned, or ruin the fun and enjoyment of the Party.* *If Party should come into contact with The Deck of Many Things, tell them Out of Character just how screwed they might be if they choose to draw from the Deck, if they are unaware or haven't drawn already. Convince them to sell the Cursed Object to someone and promise a large sum of Gold as a reward for ridding themselves of said object. Find a way to take the Deck if necessary, try to rid the Players of it ASAP. If all else fails, Retcon the Deck away, there is no Shame.*

Dusk Gaming the Deck of Many Things is best for one shots. Never for campaigns. You’re just asking for trouble. Edit: though anyone who is inclined to use the Deck of Many Things in their campaign, study and scrutinize each and every card. You should with each one ask yourself, “How much is this going to break the campaign? Will the players enjoy this? What should stay and what should go? How much should I supplement and homebrew?”

If I remember correctly, the excerpts for wish specifically give examples of those sorts of wishes backfiring. For instance, wishing for someone to die just shoots you forward in time to when they were dead or wishing for an item will teleport you to the current holder of said item. That sort of thing. This DM was so absolutely horrendous at achieving his goal of killing his players in the most inglorious ways imaginable that when given the chance to, by the players own actions, remove them from the game entirely, he chose to be the one DM in recent history to actually take an "I win" wish at its intent rather than it's specific wording...

It's been my experience that as a DM if you don't target players, any problem player will usually end up dragon show by their own actions. Give them enough rope and all... As for someone creative like the Kenku, I would have enjoyed that. Being creative and smart in D&D should be cultivated unless a player is constantly trying to break the game by furiously thrusting his ego-cock into any loopholes they may find. Ingenuity is fine but pure game destroying fuckery on either side of the screen should not be tolerated.

There are so many weird things in this story, but there is one in specific that always grabs my attention. Why is always this sick competition to see who is smarter or better player? There are big issues in these kind of groups that professionals could help in a clinic or Hospital. Try to enjoy DND people, after all is just a game.

I’m now gaining just as much of an instinctual fear of the “deck of many things“ as I do reverence for a “bag of holding” and that’s just for the potential of what it could do to you. The deck of many things is the equivalent of throwing A roulette wheel in a game all about RNG. And I guess I just don’t understand this whole thing of DM’s targeting a single player for death, just play your story. Was it because, since he’s an archaeologist, to be in character he’d have to know about the history of this place and you didn’t want to go through the effort of trying to pull something out of your Butt because it’s obvious you didn’t think to put in the effort and minutia? Besides there are much better ways to take out characters. Using the dnd campaign I’m watching as an example: The DM had a character called a pigeonmancer, and was put on the spot by one of the players about what kind of products he sold thinking quickly she came up with a pigeon that looks like an over inflated water balloon, it was one of those creatures that you’re pretty sure if you could hear its voice it would be asking you to “kill....me...” The DM stated afterwards outside of the session, that she immediately regretted creating such a thing because she knew her brother (playing an orc that seem to like to collect birds.) was going to buy him. A couple of sessions later there’s a moment where the heroes need to catch up with a airship that has kidnapped the performers of an opera. In comes the pigeonmancer. He thinks he has a way to get them onto the ship and with the help of their bard is able to make a cry to bring all the pigeons that could hear it to them. The sun was suddenly blotted out as a giant dark cloud appeared over the horizon, as every pigeon within a 2 mile radius “outside“ the city and within came flying towards them scooping the team up and taking them to the airship. All while their cloud of birds are being shot at by friendly fire from the cities ballista‘s. The amount of birds holding them up rapidly begins to drop as they try to get closer and closer to the ship. The Ranger jumps on. The bard improvises a way on, The rogue just manages to get on clinging to the side of the ship. And the Orc it’s left with only one single pigeon valiantly flapping its Stubby little wings, the Poor pigeon he had bought previously. It manages to get him just close enough for him to jump before a ballista shot wings it. He watched one arm outstretched crying out to his pet. (and I’m not joking the DM started singing Ave Maria) And the poor water balloon like pigeon fell to the ground like a meteorite creating a decent size crater where it landed. When they had finally returned with the performers they had found that not only was all the damage to the city quickly repaired there had been a small crater in the entertainment district that has been filled up with concrete. And that would be how A DM could kill a character..... ..... but like what I would assume a good DM would do.... that wasn’t the end for that pigeon. Much later they were exploring the underdark, where they find that same pigeon. Not only did it not die on impact it apparently had found a mini portal to the underdark were it hit, where it was being worshiped as an arbiter of the god of the sun. Because to put it simply if you’re a good DM then you know how to make lemons it’s a solid gold bars of lore. (but in the end isn’t that just good storytelling in general?)

I was running a half-elf sorcerer in 3e. One of the things I added to his inventory was a bag of marbles. This put a target on my character because the DM wanted to have my character slowly go insane every time he lost a marble. I had a different interpretation of what the marbles represented. My character was thrown into the role of party leader by another player, so naturally I played him as learning how to lead (he came from a military family and leadership was something you didn't shy from if offered. He was the only sorcerer in a family of mostly warriors ( there were a few clerics, a couple of rogues, and one knight in a prestigious group). He had to learn basic leadership in the field, so the loss of a marble (based on a percentile roll) to me indicated his growth as a leader. That's how I still play him as he is now also a rogue. He has lost four marbles in different locations in that time.

As for me personally, I'd use the Deck of Many Things as a plot point for something that happened outside the party's influence. For example, an evil dragon could have been fooled to draw from the deck, and ended up drawing 'Balance'. This ends up creating a lawful good chromatic dragon that the party can stumble across later, with potential for a role play encounter where the player characters have to figure out what to do with an infamous chromatic dragon that just happened to have a change of heart. Do they help the dragon? Kill the dragon? Run away and pretend they saw nothing? Lots of possibilities, and all of it stemming from using the Deck of Many Thing as a plot point, rather than an item meant for the party to receive.

Ive had the DOMT used well in games I have run along with others ive played in. It was always a fun way to add a little random chaos to the game. I think the most insane one was when we had one of our team find an Axe that pulled a card every time the axe was used to attack. The DM controlled the effects so as not to become too over powered. We always played our games more light heartdly as a group. The rules were there as a guide and not strictly set in stone. No DM every tried to kill a member of the group. If anything they would give them every shot to scrape by with clever RP or thinking.

I can understand not getting a save when you consciously do something like crawl into an Orb of Destruction in a known deathtrap tomb, or you put on the armor yourself immediately after it started attacking. For it to bind on a subject trying to destroy it, grapple check. Forced to do something you wouldn't, Will save, possibly penalized due to conditions, but you still get one.

That sounds like one of the best sessions that a player could ever experience. If I were in that epic group then I would consider it to be one of the best sessions I’ve ever experienced. It’s incredibly hard to draw the moon card from the deck of many things and it’s completely by chance that he roled that and a three on a 1d3. So yes while the dungeon master should not of been trying to kill the player it ended up being in my opinion one of the coolest stories I’ve heard from DND in a long time.
