Right now it would've been a lot better if MI was actually a Sierra game, because the evil ghost pirate Micky Mouse will never ever give Ron back his game :(. Ps: have you seen Peter Jackson's ''Avengers'' yet? ;) ;) ;)

Blown away that Casio is not even on that list of frequent suspects. If you haven't done an episode on Casio's last 2 synths they made, around 2012-2014 I believe, The Casio- XW-P1 & XW-G1, then you definitely should (the 2 are essentially the same synth, I think 1 might have had slightly better specs for say an extra 100$ new).Super underrated full sized but yet battery powered plastic beasts. They've got a very powerful & unique arp/ sequencer/ phase looping setup going on. + Some rather complex Synthesis engines+ 9 Drawbar Organ style sliders+there "Hex Synth" engine+ an IPad app for controlling/ programming/& playing+ a super neat little nonslip rubber pad on the top of the synth made for setting the iPad on (or if you don't want to use an iPad, any other FX pedals or gear).

This brought back lots of memories, including having to make my own SysEx editor in BASIC because as far as I was aware, none was available at the time. I never owned a MT-32 but I had (still have) a Roland D5, and the patch data from the games worked on the D5 aswell (and the D10, D20, D110) it was a treasure trove for me, both because I had really good music while playing all the Sierra games, but also gave me so many new sounds to my synth! :) So ofcourse my hopes are the SysX data works for the D-family aswell :)

Another good episode! I have a suggestion - How about Casio? I would love to see an episode diving into one of the so called "serious" synths that Casio put out when Yamaha was changing everybody's taste with digital. The CZ line was also super weird: they used an ALMOST FM style of synthesis which would be interesting to hear about. Weird supernerd stuff. Besides, EVERYBODY knows about Casio keyboards (many people's first set of keys). I liked the episode about the Trackman, but what about these "pro" machines? Cheers!

I have an MT-32 and an SC-D70 (for the SC-55 and SC88 compatibility, and the convenience of USB and digital recording). I can't believe the price of the MT-32 now, I picked mine up used 10-12 years ago when people treated them like old trash. I think emulators like Munt are more convenient for gaming and sounds pretty close to the real hardware. I think later sound modules like SC-55/88 are more versatile for musicians (and way easier to use) although not as common to find supported in gaming.

I bought my MT32 second hand because I was on a tight budget, I was quite pleased with the sound when I plugged it in at the shop. The MT32 has only one bank of PCM Waves, the D110 has two. To my ears the MT32 had a slightly warmer and better sound, providing you go easy on the reverb.

Unless I find one way undervalued in a thrift store...at that price it would be more cost effective to buy Falcon 2 and see if I can get relatively close with some patches on a top quality software synth with far more flexibility. And then when I'm not making music I won't share with anyone, I can use Munt and DosBox to handle those special old games.

next, find a CM-32L or CM64 - though they looked like a generic beige box with no display, a single knob and a MIDI activity light, they also responded to the MT-32 sysex. I understand that the 64 also included a cut-down U-110 inside. How was the noise level on this MT-32? Mine was pretty hissy on playback when I used it for writing songs with an Alesis MMT-8. I remember there was a kit where it not only cleaned up the output, it added a backup battery which allowed you to save what you were working on when powering down. That unfortunately required one to ship your MT-32 to Australia to do the mod, the kit was not for the faint of heart to solder.

I *loved* my MT-32 - bought it for some Roland digital strings (probably about 1995), wasn't dissapointed, used to edit from my Amiga once I realised you could sweep the filter etc! Became a staple of my techno. Should never have sold it ... I'd love another one, but not at these crazy prices. Can't believe you never used the Kalimba!!

I'm the proud owner of a partially broken Kawai K1, and I have read that its programming is overly complicated and frustrating, and I can attest to that. I hope you have the opportunity to look at one of those in the future-- I'd be very interested in learning more about it and finding out if it's worth dusting off and putting into my mix (as a MIDI only module-- the keybed has lived a very rough life and has some non-functioning keys, and at least one with a loose weight in it that falls out and jams the key).

@@AudioPilz I just found your channel recently and haven't binge-watched all your episodes yet, but I just discovered you teased this very synth almost a year ago! kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYqaZKKQr8d5bbM As I mentioned, mine's in pretty bad nick, but over MIDI it should be quite functional. I shudder to think what it might cost to send it all the way to you on Europa, but if you are interested and have any troubles sourcing one closer, we can talk about it :) I love your channel so far!

I still have an MT32 but I never used it for game audio. I had a RAP10 for that. The RAP10 was the predecessor of the Sound canvas SC1 card. My friend had a sound blaster and the music sounded laughable compared to the RAP10. DOOM and Duke Nukem sounded great but Star Wars was amazing. The music of the Wing Commander series sounded great too. A guy in Melbourne made a mod for the mt32 which fixed the noisy reverb and gave it 4 individual outputs. You didn't quite explain that the sound set in the mt32 evolved into "general midi".

@@AudioPilz thanks! Sorry, I should have said; great video! One day I'll take the MT32 out of the box again. I ended up using the D10 instead, because it didn't have the noisy reverb.

3:40 I did a video on the MT-32 and had the same issue with JSynthLib -- I ended up using the incompatible editor you showed a picture of (MEdit) and it worked pretty great under DOSBox. It's kinda janky since it's a private dev tool but it let me make a song with some custom instruments ^_^

Who would win? Roland MT-32 or IBM SPEAKER? :P But seriously, i do like its late 80s charme and you can tell where all these presets came from. Even in later years soooo many sounds in MIDI wavetables of soundcards sounded like the D50 library was the prototype for it. Just heavily reduced in capacity. If i'd get a dedicated MIDI box, i would rather go with one of Roland's SC series.
