Thanks. I'd prefer to not have to use all the skill that's available for a Day VFR landing to a Dry Runway but I'll also never refuse a pat on the back, either. That's because you're smart. Yep, same. The Missed is a bit complicated die to terrain so I gave myself until 200' AGL to get stabilized. But you're spot on.

Yep. I made a few mistakes. 1) I was thrown off that there was a visual approach plate in foreflight but not in the G3000 in the aircraft 2) I got a LANDING GEAR WARNING when I should have been slowing, descending and turning to final 3) had to work hard to record very the approach to pull off an adaquate landing.

Absolutely! Great advice. I'd briefed the 'Missed' which has a pretty aggressive turn for terrain avoidance, so with a dry runway, I opted to continue. My next mental check was at 200' agl. If I wasn't stable by then, I was executing the go-around Thanks for watching.

On the 2 GoPro 10s imovedup to 4K and set all of the cameras at 60FPM. It helped. I can still see that the GoPro 9s (not 4K capable) aren't as good. I need to get more memory cards and swap them out inflight. Thanks for noticing. I've been chasing that issue

When you started your decent talking about your raft came to mind that your altitude was about the same as the ocean depth when cruising north of San juan.when passing 27,000 ft..it was nice to hear the ATC from back home. Done that TJVQ to TJIG hop a few times.Flying into the US virgin islands area never gets boring with the spectacular views of crystal clear blue waters and white sandy beaches. Nice video!!

Perfect approach... :). My dad told a story where his friend used to have horrible landings until he learned to pull up whenever his instructor started to brace for impact... Every pilot has squirrely landings; it's fun to share them!

I thought the landing was ok...just barely. The approach however, was really bad. The speed brake helped me to recover but turning final High (4 White on the VASI), Wide (overshot the turn to final) and Fast (I was at vRef +20) isn't good.

Did that approach from Puerto Rico on a small twin engine prop many years ago. lol pilot didn't look old enough to drive. On that final approach plane was bouncing all over the place. I white knuckled the handle next to me and closed my eyes. Pilot did a fantastic job landed perfectly.

Exactly the right question to be asking. It's the main reason I left that horrible approach in the video - for me it was the complexity of the missed for terrain avoidance. So I hustled to see if I could salvage it. I was ready to go around if I wasn't stabilized by 200' agl.

Really enjoy the flight. The departure from FL Executive was hectic and the approach and landing into Beef Island is unique. Also the controller at SJU Center is remarkable. A true profesional. I am a little bias as as I am a local here in PR. As a side note Beef Island is still challenging but before the runway expansion it was a real challenge doing a smooth flair.

Great comments. FL departure was crazy hectic - I edited out about 40 mins of ground time which was non-stop and you caught some of the active deconfliction until I was clear of most of the training traffic. They San Juan Center controller was so smooth. We left Tortola and flew into Turks & Caicos which was amazing. I'll definitely go back there.

Thanks Pete. I've wrestled with getting my own raft but it seems like too big of a lift for the limited use...especially with the interval inspections. These guys I used were awesome. I've flown outside the US before but it was all as a military pilot - different rules! 😁 Fuel wasn't too bad at all but the "handlers" at the FBO were a huge (and really expensive) disappointment. You'll have to come back when I post the return flight. We went into Turks & Caicos for fuel - what an awesome place.

Thanks, I do think the landing was ok but the approach was pretty bad. Overshoot the turn to final..my a lot. 4 White on the VASI and about 20 knots fast. I had my hands full fixing all of those vs preparing to land. Had it been raining or a wet runway, I would have absolutely gone around. Maybe I should have anyway. Think about where your focus was in the visual. If the autopilot was flying the instrument section, that might have contributed. It’s an unusual approach. You did a good job of recognizing and correcting.

Thanks - I did edit out 2 items. 1) the visual approach chart that I showed in the video was in Foreflight but WAS NOT in the G3000. 2) I got an audible LANDING GEAR warning which eventually cleared. Both of these messed with my flow and lead to an unstabilized approach. Thanks so much for watching

The glitches that make piloting fun (LOL). Considering that the Honda Jet Elite is the only aircraft suitable for my mission, I have one squarely in sight. The step up from the Cirrus Jet should be a fun one. Coincidentally, I am searching for property on Long Bay Beach, Tortola, it seems we have very similar interests. Great video and thank you.

I am aware of some outside of the industry who make millions by simply sharing their adventures. And these folks, some of whom I know, maintain a private lifestyle. They have their stage life (KZbin) and there private life. In the jet world it is a matter of do you fly to cool destinations that others are interested in? And if you can fly a Honda Jet, you can navigate KZbin just fine. I hope to hear more from you and I share a laugh with your wife. Keep the blue side up...

Thanks so much for watching. Landings are firm but not hard. The jet is designed to be flown that way. The tires are smaller so it's important to pant it on the runway. We don't flare in this jet.

Question : most RNAV have FAF in alignment with (in this case ) RWY 7 - I assume you had VNAV engaged AND autopilot so at FAF the jet was configured for landing , at MINS and on VASI AND at VRF + additives So - on speed on final LDG configured You do not explain HOW you got “high /fast / wide? Some of your viewers might want to know WHAT an “RNAV “ approach IS and how it’s helpful for non ILS equipped airfields Anyways if you’re upset at “high and fast “ please explain HOW we GOT there if everything was perfect at FAF on the RNAV RWY 7 ?

Wow Steve, you're REALLY paying attention. Great observations and questions...AND exactly why this approach bothered me so much. So here's the extra detail that fills in a few blanks. The RNAV approach into Runway 7 terminates into a Visual approach. I showed both of the approach plates on the video. The catch is that the visual approach plate is in Foreflight BUT NOT in the G3000. There's a ton of detail in the visual approach - altitudes, speed, visual reference points, etc. When I couldn't pull it up in the Garmin, it threw me a bit. What I should have done was use my experience and just flown the entry, base, and final like I would normally in a visual approach. So as I was turning in (and below the surrounding terrain) I was trying to mentally recall the specifics of the visual approach while flying and completing the checklists. As I was on Base with Flaps - Approach, I put the gear down, and immediately went to Flaps - Landing. The flaps were down before the gear was fully down and locked. When that occurs, the jet sees a miss configuration and I got a LANDING GEAR audible alert with a flashing red gear handle. I need to keep my attention outside and knew I had put the gear down. So I put my hand on the gear handle while looking outside to reconfirm. The alert resolved itself but not before I got out of the groove as you see in the video What I should have done was execute a Go Around. I knew from briefing the approach, that the missed approach had a tight right turn to avoid terrain, so instead I worked hard and used the speed brakes to salvage the approach. To quote/paraphrase Charlie in the original Top Gun - While the landing was successful, I think this is an example of what not to do. I thought long and hard about just editing the whole thing out but that's when I realized that I was only compounding the issue and by leaving it in, I was reinforcing making better and safer decisions in the future.

In 1997 when I upgraded to DC9 Captain off 767 whey REMOVED “ONS “ (low freq) all we had was VOR - we always had to do “drop downs - shoot the VOR or vectors to ILS final . Lots of the VOR were offset from RWY - the FAF “did leave you high and fast I had a nice Captain explain to me (which helped as 757 Ca) “Steve - TERPS constructs ALL “Visual “ published approaches on a 3 degree slope - 10 miles 3,000 feet to commence . “Therefore Steve , you never want to be high and fast in a transport category AC “you can’t get down and slow down “ SO - just hit 10 miles , 3K drop gear and flaps sink about 700FPM Vertical Speed and be ON VREF you’ll nail it every time .” That advice was SO helpful LATER FAA & AA OPSPEC due to accidents said “ on ANY instrument or visual approach you MUST confirm “in landing configuration, on VREF stabilized ‘going through 1,000 feet AFL (AA used Radio Altimiters ) if you don’t meet the criteria it’s a Mandatory “Go Around “ AA SIM teachers would intentionally put pilots out on ILS final a little high and fast to forcr them to make that decision many in desire to “mission complete “ would blow through that hard deck 10+ KTS that was “”he failed that event “ time .

The 3 biggest ways to reduce accidents 1) Be willing to go around 2) use checklists 3) CRM I appreciate you taking the time to reinforce my lesson here. Although I'm not a professional pilot anymore, that doesn't mean that I shouldn't continue to think, plan, & fly like one.

@@bluemaxsix thx I did shoot a Maverick missile off a hard point and drop actual bombs from P3 bomb bay . The HERK just had JATO We all trained in a KINGAIR in Navy which ARMY uses for sensor and the initial trainer T34C is just a turbine powered GA plane 750SHP governed down from 1200

Start your turn earlier when the wind is pushing you wide, and keep your turn continuously in a circle. When you are level before your turn, start to slow down to your first notch of flaps and LDG speed. Look for a landing spot and draw an imaginary line from your jet to that and make your descent down that line.

It's a fast & slippery jet. Final Approach Speed (vRef) is calculated for each landing so it depends. Typically it's between 105 and 120 KIAS.

Appreciate your honesty on that one. Having trained without electronic aids and glass cockpit I sometimes wonder how you guys would cope with catastrophic instrument failure. My most enjoyable flight ever was seat of the pants: compass, tacho & watch only.... to a full stop landing.

I was close. The 'Missed' is aggressive based on terrain avoidance. I used the speed brake to correct and was ready to go kissed if I wasn't stable by 200' agl.
