"It's not Facebook ruining your content; it's your content ruining your content". Absolutely agree. As someone who's still struggling to build a seed following online, I feel this pain. I am frustrated that I still haven't hit the nail on the head and started producing content that really makes people want to engage. But I won't resort to sneaky "tactics" (read with a Ramit tone of voice and facial expression for maximum effect) to boost my content. Because I know for a fact that in the long run, it's gonna come back to bite me. If I post crappy content and boost it artificially, I will never learn what my audience really wants. And when the going gets real, I won't have a leg to stand on. Thanks for this reminder Derek.

Liked, shared, subscribed. I have a marketer friend that's constantly asking, "What's your favorite song by [X band]?" They get tons of comments. I'm sure it's increasing their visibility on Facebook but I'm not sure it's helping them engage their audience to build their business, which is likely the reason they keep asking.

It helps as long as there's a balance, you don't have to stick on either one side of the spectrum. Nothing wrong with what your marketer friend is doing.

Just because it gets engagement doesn't mean it's good - definitely agree with this. Ramit makes fun of people posting motivational quotes and pictures for this very reason. It'd be interesting to see a video / case study about what type of content got you the biggest ROI/sales. I'm interested nowadays on how to get QUALITY leads so if you could give some examples on this, that'd be great!

Speaking Effortlessly I post motivational content on my business’s instagram to give value to my followers, which then builds trust, which then leads to them being a customer. Not with everyone, but hopefully someone!

This is so good. Gosh I feel like we should be paying you for this stuff, Derek! Just because it gets engagement, doesn't mean it's good. Test types of content and see what gets an authentic response.

You can’t get into “social marketing” expecting a measurable ROI like you see in your click funnels. Derek’s absolutely right, trust your gut. Make mental notes when people approach you at events and thank you for your hard work. It might not lead to an immediate sale, but over time or through referrals- it will.

I see these post too and I have this look 🙄 but your videos are making a difference and modeling the way for other entrepreneurs to keep up the consistency and fun!!

GV was not the first to say it. It was Steve Thomas - Partner in Oneicity, in early 2011. The article was about the demise of the promise social media held and it resonated with GV and he capitalized on the saying.

I agree completely that these types of posts are damaging to marketers as a whole. Now is this algorithm change for organic reach or is this affecting paid ads? I've been running some paid engagement ads for our clients and they are getting some good leads out of it. I'm just wondering if the change hasn't affected all FB pages yet and that's why our ads are still doing well.
@Richgirlbusiness6 жыл бұрын
It is with organic reach. Paid ads will also show because well you are paying however I think opt-in leads are rising in cost. I used to get leads on a simple lead magnet for .30 now closer to a $1. Again if you have the right business model this increase doesn't really hurt.

"marketers ruin everything!". I am not sure if this is his original, but I hear Garyvee says it a lot!

Hey Derek, love your blog and it keeps getting better and better. Thanks for sharing all these tips. But i do remember in your first videos you were pretty much begging people to like, subscribe and hit the notification bell at the end of the video. Maybe you should have mentioned those in this video ;-)

I agree! I don’t want to beg for attention. My fb subs are responding well to personal updates right now - more ‘this is the weird thing my kid did today’ and less ‘this is how I can solve all your problems. I’m sure it changes based on demographics and the times.

I love your daily video....you know the one where you waived your arms around and go irritated at stupid people? That was the best!

I've noticed that asking genuine and authentic questions tend to drive the most engagement with our audience. Especially when the questions are 100% focused on the audience

You’re saying what a lot of us are thinking! When I see the shmoozy posts asking for comments, likes, and shares I cringe. What do you want me to do? Feel sorry for your fear of Facebook (allegedly) being “out to get you”? Pshhh... Like you said, Derek, appealing to pity/mercy won’t get meaningful engagement. Just because vulnerability is “in” doesn’t mean you’re making a meaningful impression. And speaking of impressions. Sure. You might make your Analytics look good by increasing some pseudo-engagement. But I highly doubt that kind of post/content leads to conversions. “Pity-likes” are not conversions.

I have watched/listened to this vid four times to make it sink in. I don't really bother w/FB because I have no customers there. On IG, I think my post should just slay it, then crickets. The daily stuff (mundane, IMO)...off the charts. Now to get the followers to buy...

Unfortunately, it's the pictures of my meal that gets the most likes. Would you please do a vlog on cognitive dissonance? Seems like most parents can't hear what I'm saying because of the dissonance. One example is that in my 30 years of teaching kindergarten and 1st grade, it was my job to teach children how to be aware when they are in danger. One kindergartner responded with "When my legs want to run is how I know I am in danger." Parents cannot even be with the idea of teaching their children how to recognize when they are not safe. A very bad thing for the children.

why are you monetizing your videos? it is adding friction.

What friction?
@CyrusSabounchi6 жыл бұрын
Vic Speaks if you're a brand using video for your own promotion, and you let other people advertise before your videos, then other marketers will push their ad before your contents. hence the extra friction
