Bad Microwave Demo/Fail

Had a really old microwave do that when I was a teenager. My mom put some food in, turned it on, it started glowing brighter than usual and making noises. If I remember right, it burned a hole in the top metal outside casing.

It's an easy fix. Change the mica sheet

I took it out & the shorting/arcing stopped. What does that mica sheet do?...
