Bad model topology? Fix it all at once with Remesh and Retopologize! [MAYA 2020]

Maya 2020's newly exposed Remesh and Retopologize features allow you to take a messy, uneven mesh and redistribute its faces into something you can actually use for rigging and animation.
*UPDATE*: I figured out a way to use Bifrost to completely skip the manual cleanup requirement! See how here: • Skip manual mesh clean...

Worked for me until I tired to retopologise a model with 16 million polygons and then it was still at 100% for about 15 minutes so I turned maya off, but with other models with 100,000 polygons it worked amazing and reduced my 100,000 polygon zbrush/mudbox sculptures down to about 1000 polygons with no tris or n gons

I feel like this would be useful for topologizing areas that aren't really important, kind of like a time saver or something. You'd topologize the face by hand, and then the ears, the back of the head, etc, you'd just hit the button and be done with it. I may be wrong tho.

Well if you actually looked at the terrible topology of that model, you can be assured that they will have to retopologize things. Blender in the other hand has had this stuff for several different versions and now it has a remesher that works better than this one, it actually has symmetry, somethingnthis one lacks.

I don't understand why Autodesk is very less innovative even after being in industry from several decades, blender and Zbrush came after Autodesk and they are very innovative like blender has every tool inside it, you don't have to go out of the software for anything, u even have compositing tab inside it, they are trying to develop a new texture tab like substance painter inside it, while on Zbrush it has the best sculpting tools inside it, remesh,retopo, easy uv's, whatnot?? see if Autodesk doesn't act quickly, just like Mudbox Maya is going to disappear.

Nepu-Tech USA haha yeah, it’s Autodesk after all. The problem is rather that no one in the business I’m in offers blender seats. If there is sculpt to do it’s zBrush all the way. It’s so far ahead of the curve and relatively cheap that blender will never reach its popularity for this specific use case. Anyway I don’t even want the whole mudbox functionality just that the ones already build in maya are actually useable. Even 5$ iPad apps are better than what Maya offers currently.

It looks very neat. But with all “one button fix all” options, I am quite skeptical. I can see this working for me when I merge meshes together for 3D printing. Sometimes I can get some really ugly geometry that is just a pain to fix. And this might be able to be used as a good starter for retopoing. But I encourage everyone to at least look at the mesh before calling it done. The better topology you make, the easier you’ll make it for the rigger and animator.

Just based off of this video and other previews of the Maya remesher, it is not even close to what ZRemesher or even Quad Remesher can do (The latter still lacks a few features from ZRemesher). Heck, even Blender's own built in remesher QuadriFlow can get decent results if you know what you're doing, and that is completely free. If you want an auto-remesher and don't own ZBrush, just buy Quad Remesher, regardless of what 3D package you use. It is certainly worth every penny.

Because I'm trying basic models like sofa, table etc but I am not able to achieve that hard edge loop, whenever I use insert edge loop that hard edge loop connection gets cut I don't know how :/ (& I mostly do modeling using 'insert edge loop' tool not like making 2 different parts & then merge/attach them.)* Does this video's method will solve that ? & If I want to make showreel then should I use this method ? Is it ok or is it like 'not industry standard' ? please guide me. 🙏

@Autodesk_Maya
@Autodesk_Maya 4 жыл бұрын
This is actually a new algorithm that's more versatile than the older Mudbox version (i.e. it handles more cases properly). You can also use Remesh on components to achieve dynamic tessellation before sculpting them. Although it's true we unfortunately don't have curve guides yet, you can harden edges to maintain them during a Retopologize, which in turn will affect the new edge flow around them. As noted at the end of this video, this is an area that is still undergoing a lot of research, so expect the feature to improve over time!

Autodesk, I’m a bit disappointed as to how many manual work you recommend in this video for things that can be easily automated. Filling in holes/ clean up for the model - both of these can be automated, I am sure you’re engineers can come up with quick solutions. Since the whole purpose of retopology is to save time for your users, please keep that in mind for the steps that go along with it (it seems that the manual work takes more time than the use of feature itself). I hope this comment reaches any of your product owners.

They have indeed, and rest assured our engineers are working on it. These are actually pretty complex problems to solve, and we want to make sure we do it right rather than just throw out something quick so it'll take some time. Please bear with us. Also don't forget, this video is showing an absolute worst case scenario. Most models won't be even close to this difficult to cleanup.

Sculpting in Maya?! That was a funny joke. And Pause really? Why is the algorithm running continuously.? Why do you need to "pause" it. Why isn't always paused and you can make these changes on the sliders and if you want to recompute it there is a button "Re-topologize". God autodesk always has such a weird workflow with everything. Also why are you showcasing this with characters. You won't ever compete with Zbrush for characters so just stop. Nobody is going to auto-retopo characters in Maya. If we would retopo it would be either manually in Maya or automatic in Zbrush. And for realistic characters if you have one good retopod mesh EVER there is no need to ever do it again now that there is Wrap 3.

@@JedsAnimations it sure does. It's had sculpting for a long long time and it has had a remesher for several years. Now it has an extra remesher that actually projects good, symmetrical quads, unlike the one that Maya has.
@JedsAnimations
@JedsAnimations 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheAmazingJimmy Did you even watch the video? The remesher that blender has doesn't get close to following the topology that well. The voxel remesh that blender has is good for sculpting, but blender's quad remesh is a mess.
@TheAmazingJimmy

@@JedsAnimations the guy who made the cthulu model did it in blender, decimated it and said that he'd use blender to remesh it. Blender's quad remesher does follow topology pretty well, better than Mayas because it has a symmetry option.

As much as I hate Zbrush, it's been the industry standard for sculpting for years. Why waste man hours developing this when you could, oh I don't know, give us proper modifiers in Maya? Or real time rendering? Kinda like Blender except without all the annoying Blender quirks. Don't get me wrong, I love all this, but I think there's far more important things that should get priority, rather than primitive sculpting tools that won't get close to Zbrush's power any time soon. I'd rather see more tools to improve the modeling and rendering pipeline specifically.

Sorry but as a Rigger with 10years experience, I despise Remesh as I constantly get lazily Re-meshed models now instead of proper box modeling topology. Its like turning every Artisan Sculpt into a Mcdonalds Toy, much too dense and unpredictable to Rig properly. Leave it to Maya to create a tool that worsens the pipeline

haaaaaahahahaahahahahahhaa. You have to be kidding right :) manually cleaning that stuff up on the scan is virtually impossible and would not want for my worst enemy. Dynamesh can take care of that in a minute or less. Maybe would watch an Autodesk engineer to do it. Zbrush is waaaaaaaaay ahead of you guys in this field. Why would anyone bother to do retopo of an organic mesh in Maya? I would rather see a retopo that actually works on hard edges. Nobody is expecting you to take on Zbrush. Do what you guys are good at and let the more advanced stuff to the pros.
