At least in the book, Sayle is portrayed as a literal raving lunatic, which makes his evil plan a little easier to swallow. And Alex calls him out on his pettiness. Honestly, considering how dark the later books get, it probably would have worked better if Sayle was portrayed as having had to endure Carrie levels of bullying.

The fifth book in the Alex Rider series, Scorpia (which had been out for two and a half years by the time the Stormbreaker movie was released) was especially dark, and it is easily the best of the books by some distance. Somehow, I doubt that the film version would have done this twisty, though-provoking story any justice...

Yet another example of a film's lack of focus utterly destroying it's potential. At times it's like a silly Disney Channel movie, at others it's like complete a parody of the spy genre, and others are like a completely serious spy thriller. All of these things DO NOT go together!

Given what they said it seems like the book wasn't all that great to begin with. After all the movie plot stay's faithful to the book it's just the comedy is ramped up and the action ramped down. Film Brains even said the biggest strength of the book was it's action scenes, not it's plot.

I loved the Alex Rider books as a teen and couldn't wait for this to come out. I remember going to watch it and being so angry with what they did with it, especially changing the ending, the nationality of the villain and very poor casting choices (the actor looked way too old to be 14 eventhough he was 14 at the time of filming). This is one of those movies that grates on me to this day because it ruined one of my favourite childhood books.

I'd like to say in defense of the "hitting with a rope," some of the techniques Alex is using are similar to, if not actually, the techniques of chain whip. It's a surprisingly difficult weapon to master as it's fluid and you can't control the entirety of the chain. I don't know the background of Alex's (the actor) martial arts training, but I could understand why some cuts by the editor would be necessary if Alex wasn't specifically trained in the weapon. The editing style was awful, no doubt about that, but maybe this explains the rope scene a little better?

My main issues with the film. Sabine who was introduced in Eagle Strike at Wimbledon while Alex was investigating match fixing by Chinese triads. Nadia Vole not having the moment of lying to Alex about working as a spy as well but then tries to kill him. The fact Sayle had a backup for releasing the virus. Using "Feel Good Inc." By Gorillaz during the SAS montage.

OBSERVATION: Except for the bullet holes in the driver's side door, the BMW appeared to be in pristine condition. If the first two bullets shot at Ewan McGregor did kill him, how was the car able to safely stop without being involved in some sort of damage producing collision? THEORY: The bullets missed Ewan (or were not fatal). This could have given him an opportunity to stop the vehicle... and be killed afterward. Thus explaining why the vehicle has no remarkable damage and why there are more bullet holes in the door.

The problem with this movie as a PG-rated action flick is that its too grounded in reality to not require being cut up. Most PG rated action films are very fantastic in nature. Race To Witch Mountain, Tron: Legacy, Tomorrowland, Alice In Wonderland (2010), Pan, and A Wrinkle in Time are either fantasy or sci-fi. Those films are respectively one of my favorite movies ever, good but extremely generic, a massive disappointment, just okay, complete shit, and insanity rendered on celluloid.

Tommy Deonauth's Archives Yeah. The Tudors is probably the best of her TV roles because it gives her the meatiest character to chew on. She's only on Agent Carter for a few episodes but she's still really good for the little bit she appears.

I can't believe the amount of good talent this movie was able to get and potentially ruin except for the fact that no one saw it. Anyway, Film Brain and The Dom, the REAL crossover we've all been waiting for. ♡

Another problem: in the novel, Sayle Tower did not have the backup transmitter. In fact, it's not even mentioned if the high-rise building they ascended was Sayle Tower at all.

I remember watching this film back when I didn't know good book-to-movie adaptations were an exception, not the norm. Back in middle school, the Alex Rider series was probably the most checked-out and demanded books in the library. There was so many terrible things in this film I either didn't remember or notice. You'd think super, duper agent Ewan McGregor would pull some more sick car stunts such as, I dunno, _stopping the car or speeding up_ when some assassin is pulling an unnecessarily elaborate murder stunt.

It's like FB and Dom read my mind when they pointed out that Jimmy Carr constantly sounds he's setting up a joke whenever he talks in the film.

Alex Pettyfer’s film debut was actually 2 years earlier when he was 13 in the lead role (ironically with Stephen Fry) in the BBC film version of Tom Brown’s School Days. It’s obvious he got the role for his telegenic looks. It’s surprising how bad the film is given the big role Horowitz played in its production and the presence of so many top actors.

It's a shame this movie turned out the way it did. Some no-brainer things that could have improved it: - Stick closer to the book (I know this is so cliche with book-to-movie adaptations, but 99 times out of 100 it's true. If people liked the story the way it is in the book, don't make unnecessary changes when you make it into a movie.) - An overall more mature/darker tone. It doesn't need to be R rated or anything, but more effort to make the fight and chase scenes more realistic and less watered down to be kid-friendly. And the part where Jack says "What the heck are you doing?" rubbed me the wrong way. No need to drop F bombs or anything, but it would have felt more natural to drop the kid-friendly sugar coating and let her say what the hell. - Speaking of Jack, better casting for her character. She's nothing like what I pictured when I read the books (I think she's red-haired in the books) - Less of the cheesy, over-the-top set design. Make it look more realistic. - Same with the villains' costumes and makeup. It was over-the-top, cheesy and made them look like a parody of kids' movie villains instead of believable evil characters.

Paco Ramirez Horowitz wanted it to be 12A but the filmmakers wanted a PG film. IIRC The Harry Potter movies were still PG rated at the time.

Kind of a big mistake to put Ewan McGregor as a spy into the opening, because you immediately wished the film was about him.
