Great time to just slowly acquire old cards. I got a Falling Star this year, it sits on my desk in a top loader, it makes me smile. Someday, maybe it will be worth more than I paid and if not, that's fine too.

For collectibles to increase in value, from my perspective, one of two things have to happen. Either more people need to want the item or there needs to be less of the item so the people who do want it have to fight for it. When it comes to vintage Magic, neither of those things are likely to happen. New players have no emotional connection to vintage Magic. Yeah, they know the name Black Lotus and Mox, but to them it's the same as any other card they don't have access to. Most folks who would *really* want something like the Power Nine either already have it or won't pay the price to get it. Like Rudy said, it's deadlocked. The only big event I could see to change the market is if Magic went away.
@lightworker2956
@lightworker2956 2 ай бұрын
Exactly. I think the Rudies of the world don't understand just how unlikely new magic players are to spend thousands of dollars on a Mox. And the people who are willing to spend thousands on a Mox probably have one already. And sure, there might be a person in 2024 winning the lottery and wanting to buy a Mox, but that's not going to hugely move the market / isn't going to hugely spike the price of Moxes.

If it’s going to be this long of a winter then it might just be permanent. Reserve list is only going to get less desired as new cards get released that are powerful and the older players leave.

I think a big factor is that Wizards has effectively turned a lot of old players away from Magic between Universes beyond, ridiculous power creep, and endless variations of cards. These people follow Magic less closely than they used to, which results in a lower likelihood of them spending big money on vintage magic. The past few years have seen a big turnover in the Magic player/collector base in my opinion.

@@b.ghosty9749 there is always a spring, unless the global economy falls off a cliff, in which case your card collection becomes nothing but nostalgia. Winter looks like it has barely gotten started too, the amount of debt floating around and inflation not going anywhere, or I watch too much doomer economic videos. But in tougher times cards are near the bottom of the list when it comes to a place to hold wealth, you want to spread it around and collect stuff like silver and gold coins as well as a hedge.

@Joshua-gt7pz
@Joshua-gt7pz 2 ай бұрын
@xxthevampirate Exactly, the reserve list is worth money based solely on the popularity of MTG. Owning a black lotus is a status symbol, or a tournament must, and both of those desperately depend on popularity. It's up to the community to include new players, and up to hasbro to not fuck it up, and only one of those things is doing work right now.

You misunderstand the powercreep. Itr is not all cards that have powercreep, for the most part it is creatures that become more and more powerful, but instants and sorceries have been powered down compared to the early days since many turned out to be too powerful and or too low cost. As for artifacts there it is a mixed bag.

Old magic will hold value, bearing some ups and downs. But people have to realize there is a ceiling on it's growth and that peak was likely covid. There's nothing to drive growth in old magic prices except investors who think old magic can only go up. This is not just a problem of new players not caring about old magic, there is a price ceiling problem. Average income in the united states right now is just under 60k. 10 years ago in 2014 it was 53k. What was a dual land in 2014? You need a lot of free income to be buying into old magic, there just aren't enough people that can buy a 400 dollar dual land. You've hit market cap.
@Temp3st60
@Temp3st60 2 ай бұрын
I also think it's a generational issue. The mass spread of popularity was brought about by a nostalgic generation who grew up playing these card games, and wanted to start playing again, but ultimately collecting because of the insane price increases. Post-Covid the excitement has died down but the prices only continue to climb and younger generations just don't care as much about old sets. The longer old sets sit, the less desirable they'll probably become.

Now people understand why it’s called a “collectible” card game. These older vintage cards, especially RL cards, will never be reprinted ever again - ever. Over time, that drives up the price and the market slowly dries up of these cards in scarcity. We’re at a point now where it’s tangible and people don’t have 300.00 to dump in an inflated economy on a City of Traitors or 400+ dollars on a Transmute Artifact. People need necessities and these cards have fallen into a dark cyclone of unaffordability.

Who knew that when “collectors” take cards off the market and create a price spike that people who want to play them can’t and then their investments will suck due to lack of demand when formats die. So the longer you wait the less desirable those cards are going to be because the new players don’t care about them at all. The rest of us who do are 35-45 years old and I doubt any of us will be playing in 10-15 years and if we are the chances we play paper magic are very slim. You’re going to lose infinite to arena greed eventually when they put these cards online, you’ve seen it with mtgo and it’s inevitable.

I am not sure I agree on it being in a winter. It all comes down to when you got into all of it. If you got in at the peak, yeah, it sucks. If you got in before that with an entry level cost basis, you should be doing quite well. They all still sell. And they sell for more than they did in 2019-early 20. It has held fairly steady with staples increasing a ton. I used to buy mox diamonds for $250. Dual Lands for 180 or so. Those are all more than double (and in the case of duals, triple) my entry points. All comes down to when you bought in. But the stuff sells when it is put on the market.

Hot take: let's admit that Commander drives RL prices right now. Card is useful to a new, hyped legendary creature? Buy out, card spikes 200% and doesn't fall back to it's low. Without Commander, OG duals are probably still $30-$100. How do you get vintage magic up and interesting again? Create a new format that dethrones Commander as the popular format. An eternal format that cares about having play sets of 4 again. Something like redesigning Vanguard, I dunno.

We will see one more surge in 15-20 years when we get people retiring with disposable income and want to finally get these old cards but then the market will stagnate again and slowly die. A good analogue is cars for boomers. Look at the market for those 50s and 60s era cars starting to weaken while 80-90s cars surge.

Comic books from the 1940s still sell for thousands of dollars, even though people who read them as kids aren't around. The long term value is there if the items are still relevant and collectible. For example everyone knows Batman, there are new shows and stuff coming out, so Batman original comics sell for a ton of money. It's the same thing for vintage Magic, as long as the game is still around there will be people who want to collect old rare stuff.

I thought you just collect and not worried to sell i thought you just wanted to see other sellers that show it sold for that so you know the Market. If your selling sometimes its good to start at the bottom of the pile and start letting it go if it frustrates or worries you etc. If you have that much invested Bro your really not going to lose out on anything right you said the facts if you bought at right time there is no loss. dont let it upset you cuz you can flip so much product and then flip different inventory or bail out all together your still in a win win situation right? Look at Fallout you mentioned its doing well but I dont like it I thought it s from Fallout the video game not Bobbleheads but anyway same with Bloomburrow the market you said luvs it I absolutely hate it. All i want is dragons and potions and artifacts,demons,witches,creatures,magic spells with awesome artwork and Hasbro refuses to do that. They do anything it seams to get the next set out they need to concentrate on bad ass art imo i dont want to see rabits and birds I want to see sick lands. You get the point but dont let it stress you cuz you might be missing out on opportunity I do that constantly keep letting things go that take to long to wait. And i hate to call some ppl Guppies but most cards are let go for nothing then it crashes then the Whales do it cuz of the Guppies Now we got 2 different fish creating market crash while ppl like us try to ride it out. Then Ebay creates its own crash by watching with no live bidding until last second my point is whenever its time its time no point to hold 30k card etc when you can flip that 10-50X by then. Wish All you the best collecting have good day

I think a lot of card investors in the mid to high range have switched to Pokemon. It is safer, more liquid, and easier to diversify within Pokemon than MTG. Safer to scale larger positions because it’s easier to exit them in Pokemon. That’s why I switched anyways

I see a ton of groups in my area are burned out from the fast release schedule. The burnout has made a lot of them switch to proxies. Once they start using proxies, people in these groups seem to see no value in the cards.

There is people out there that would like to get into vintage Magic, but its too expensive. The money was already made and people holding on to vintage Magic cards are now holding on to cardboard unless there is someone out there willing to spend thousands of dollars on something they will have to hold on for a long time and not easy to move.

Can you sit down and talk more about some of your art for a video? Just how you did with Lego some time ago! :) I feel like art and these beautiful pieces are something that are heavily disconnected from "normal" people, you only know about them if you are really into the topic, I would love to hear more about them or see more of them! :)

Bro you have got to find an art storage solution that's humidity/temp controlled and no light. I think those are smart buys but any one of temp/humidity/light exposure can ruin those within your lifetime. Edit: (Yes I know museums display them, they also do so for short periods and rotate them into dark climate controlled rooms for 90%+ of their lives)

There's not even vintage tournaments in my country so most reserved list cards is useless to own for me and a lot of other people i assume. Reprints would help with turning some reserved list into 'bling' cards in countries like mine making the demand go up by a substantial amount. But i know that will never happen because of bs reasons so whatever, no vintage tournaments for us.

How do you know he’s leveraged? He’s never said this and he’s actually preached against leverage. He’s not selling any of his old stuff, so he’s not reliant on that income. Since he bought a lot of vintage years ago, his cost basis has got to be low enough that that the Rudy Vault would still yield a profit if he had to sell some stuff.

It's only going to keep getting worse. With the new CT scanning techniques that just came out for finding foils in sealed Pokemon, it's only a matter of time before they figure out a way to identify non-foils in the packs too. We will hit record highs with sealed versions of super rare cards that have been verified by scans, but anything without gold in it will be basically worthless. The future is coming for sealed product.

this reminds me of my fathers elvis collection, just not selling what is used to be worth anymore. Some of us know how big of a deal he was and the beatles are but this stuff might of just lost its collectible aspect. i personally never found myself ever ever playing these tcg but i love the art so much and people like rudy i just keep buying them like lotto tickets. Even if rudy acted like the federal reserve burns all this product its hard to know whats what. a wnew pandimic is all we need and some free money from the govt will be our only chance for that kinda bull market

Indeed. People who grew up with X will always think that X is inherently amazing and has a timeless and universal appeal. But then the next generation won't appreciate X nearly as much. Whether X is vintage cards or Elvis collectibles.

As a new player. There are only a few cards from the list that are powerful cards. Then we need to talk about prices that are high. I bought some still haven't bought others. I have no emotional attachment to these cards to raise the price even more. Older product like Dominaria is being bought. I assume to from mix of new and old to live in those older moment of magic. Can't really do that with the list products without breaking a arm and a leg. New products are coming out with better or equal versions of cards from the list. My 2 cents. Also how can i buy that damaged Dominaria box from you. Also i do have some cards from the list but they are like cents but look nice.
