Metal is not a sound. Metal is not a production chain. Metal is not a fashion. Metal is an attitude to life.

Out of curiosity, how would you describe the metal 'attitude to life'?
@tradjick7 ай бұрын
@@sVieira151Facing the sometimes darkness and, if necessary, becoming it. Embracing the rage when it's warranted. Accepting and valuing raw emotions, all of them not just the shallow faux facades many hide behind. Facing up and not backing down. Appreciating the beauty in brutality AND the brutality in the beautiful. IMO anyways. The thing above all is rejoicing in excellence and the individual experience while joining in the similarities. This is why I personally have an issue with the "elitist" attitude and don't consider that attitude metal though it's subject often is. Purple is metal. Dio is metal. The Irons are metal. RATM are metal. Ot3p is metal. Jinjer are metal. Nightwish are metal. Lorna are metal. Opeth are metal. Dream Theatre are metal. Sleep Token are metal. Taylor Swift is not metal.

For me, metal and subgenres have always been about accepting the flaws of life and humanity. Growing up as an emokid, listening to mostly music about difficult emotions, whether that was anger in deathcore, political commentary or depression in emo, it was just all very different from pop at the time. Pop has changed a bit since and people overall value deeper lyrics now, but back then? 50 cent rapping about hoes and cars, britney spears and the other popgirls singing meaningless songs while portrayed as sex objects. The very essence of metal and/or alternative music is to be REAL. It's not strange that metal bands did all they could to differ themselves from pop back then. But now, emotional vulnurability and individuality is celebrated in pop, rap, r&b and what have you, so to me the evolution of metal mixing in genres that we historically have deemed "guilty pleasures" feels so good, and natural. Man I remember people shitting on us emokids for not being TOUGH enough, so clearly there were some issues in the metal scene too. OH and some swedish singers of metal bands have admitted that they wanted to sing opera but they were afraid of getting bullied for it so they went with metal instead. Singer of Hammerfall (power metal) is an example of that. Now power metal is deemed pretty dorky too so guy can't win, until now, hope he goes on to write an opera. Metal purists are a dying breed, as they should be.

I love this band. They are even better live! Fun fact: the melody for TDOPOM was created during the pandemic, when Noah plugged various sounds from his home, such as keys, the stove igniter, his roommate’s dog, and a funky, metal wall decoration, into logicpro. It’s so crazy to hear! My absolute favorite is Like A Villian. In the second verse, the note he hits on the word “page” and then again on “stayed” is the most perfect note I’ve ever heard. I also love Limits and IDWT$. Enjoy!!!

Also, I saw the birth of the Trip Hop scene with Portishead and Massive Attack. My dad introduced me to Nina Simone, Etta James and all the great Blues musicians. It's amazing to me to hear new bands like Bad Omens, Sleep Token, Ghost, etc... and realise that they all incorporate in their music some of the same stuff that I was listening to 40+ years ago. I also want to suggest a band you haven't listened to yet who have a ridiculously talented singer, and that is Fit for an Autopsy. Specifically a song from their album Oh What The Future Holds, and that song is In Shadows. The whole album is fucking incredible start to finish, but In Shadows shows off how talented Joe Bad is. His voice has such versatility in the distortions he uses, and has clean-er sections that he does using some layering that just are so very good. Check them out.

I’m a middle child lol, somewhere between the silvers and the cubs, approaching 49. LOVE Bad Omens. They are definitely based in metal, in my opinion. Some of their older stuff is a bit on heavier side, while the most recent releases have more electronic elements and production. Check out Dethrone, which is my fave (a slightly older song from their 2019 album Finding God Before God Finds Me. From the more recent album The Death of Peace of Mind, I think you’d like Artificial $uicide, or their big hit Like A Villain. Their most recent release is even more of a departure from metal, V.A.N. features vocals from Poppy, and Noah does not sing on the studio version (though there is a live version where he sings as well). I’m not a big fan of pigeonholing music into specific genres, and the whole debate about what qualifies as “metal” feels a bit like gatekeeping. I prefer to be open minded and listen to what is attractive to me, what moves me, what fits my mood. Some days that’s Sleep Token or Bad Omens, or Bring Me the Horizon. Some days it’s Ice Nine Kills or Motionless in White or Knocked Loose. And other days I’m feeling nostalgic and it’s back to 80’s Metallica, or 90s grunge, or 2000s numetal. Who knows where my Spotify playlist will take me next? Just enjoy what you like and let others do the same.

Another middle child at 41 I guess? Cut my teeth on Ozzy and Nazareth. Grew up with Metallica and Megadeth. Teenage years were Rage Against the Machine, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, System of a Down… I could go on and on. I fuckin LOVE Bad Omens. Noah’s voice live is just as good on album, even when there’s no vocal processing (I know sometimes they do live processing too). Much like Sleep Token it was the vocals that were the main draw to be completely honest. Noah’s got a killer range. His highs are angelic and can be very bell like. His lows sound like they’re from the pits of hell and are just brutal. Is it metal? I don’t know. Don’t care either. It’s some good ass music though! Next song suggestions: What It Cost/Like a Villain - they kind of blend into 1 song. I'm a middle child at 40 years old. Hahaha. This song isn't for me, nor would I say it's completely within the Metal genre. But, if you like it, you like it. There is something to be noted how you are exploring the Metal genre and have found very few songs you dislike. Perhaps next year you will be doing daily errands in a Cannibal Corpse shirt in public. 😅 As for songs you won't like; I am half and half with how you would feel about bands like Godflesh and early Pitchshifter. Heavy, slow, mechanical dirge with dissonant vocals that sound like they were recorded two rooms away in a tunnel. Try the songs "Like Rats" or "Brutal Cancroid". You can always try Gwar Fantastic band with less than fantastic musical skills.

I think if you really want to experience his voice as it is without all the distortion, you need to listen some of the acoustic stuff.

Are they metal? Dunno. Are they? I did not look them up in the Encyclopedia Metallum. My last goth metal band wasn't according to them. No joke, I know people who take this as the only bible to decide what metal is. Jerks. I could not care less about these definitions. What they are for sure: A great example how to do modern metal in 2024+. Because: - They know how to give a song a structure, so you can call it a song. - They know what a hook is. - They know what a melody is. - They know how to create an atmosphere. - They know when a song should end. - They know that not every song needs a guitar solo, but they would have one, IF it is needed. - They know how to use musical effects sparingly but in the right places. - They are not shy of production. Means - yeah, they put a ton of effect on the vocals and use of course pitch correction. "AUTOTUNE, AAAAAARGH!" (Uh, f*ck off, so what?) But they do it for a reason, and, as you said very accurately: A good vocalist still is a good vocalist after well done vocal production, no matter if there is pitch correction (which is done everywhere, more or less, except the producer is a totally dumb jerk like I was even a few years ago), compressor, shimmering reverbs and whatnot. So yeah, very well done piece of music. And the video has vampires in it. And fire. Hell, yeah. How am I not surprised, that you even know who Souxsie and the Banshees were and like them for the style and authenticity? You are born in the wrong time, musically, right? I know that feeling... Have a wonderful end of the week and a great evening, my dear dudette and soulmate. Best regards and ... "Law-abiding citizen"? How many outtakes until you got that one without laughing?

Why am I not surprised that you just get it when it comes to vocals production! It’s just not a substitute for talent and these kinds of new bands to my mind have it in spades. It’s so impressive the amount of thought that has clearly went into these tracks. Yeah I haven’t had any grumpy purists in my comments yet but I’m sure they’ll come at some point. I do wholeheartedly believe I was born in the wrong era and not in the clique way of looking at the 1950s and thinking god the fashion was amazing more a sort of, I would have been much better served by being born in the 70s or even 60s so I could be adult enough to enjoy some of my most favourite artists. Siousie and the Banshees are a seasonal staple in my listening for a whole bunch of reasons. I recorded in too many times saying terrible things KZbin would almost certainly flag me for so I settled with that (begrudgingly) hope you are having a cosy evening and a relaxing lot uneventful week 😊💜💜
