As a teenager there was a legend about bad Religion, that they recorded a weird ass prog rock synth album sometime in the 80s after how could hell be any worse and before their first real epitaph punk rock record “suffer”. It was always said to be terrible and unlistenable. I never met anyone that owned it. I always wanted to hear it. Today I finally looked it up on you tube and I must say it’s a fucking great album!

so funny that this was their sophomore album, when suffer blew everyone away (rightfully) and this got swept under the rug... reading their biography now and Brett Gurewitz did a ritualistic burning of all of the returned vinyls. somebody has gold in their attic!

In Anarchy Evolution, Greg mentions this era. They made the album at a time when punks became disgustingly violent as a kind of response that Bad Religion didn't want to be part of that. At least that's what I remember from reading it. Basically a "fuck punk" album.

It would be interesting to see how many listens this album would get per month if it were put on spotify, I think that would give a good indication of what their fans really think of this album overall. Personally, I don’t mind it. It’s certainly not as bad as it’s made out to be, especially when you consider their age at the time. Just a bunch of kids messing around, experimenting with music and developing their song-writing skills.

The drummer on this album, Davy Goldman, was the music counselor at my summer camp in 1983, when I was only fourteen. Me and my punk rock pal would interrupt camp gatherings and sing-a-longs with our own loud singing of songs from the 1st Bad Religion LP. Davy was sort of embarrassed and tried to tell us that this album was "different" (which it is!). I didn't get it at the time, but yeah, it is new wave / beach punk / power pop / prog / metal...with that cool voice and guitar. Thanks!

I know tons of punks hate this record because of its progressive rock sound, but since I love progressive rock more than any other genre, I absolutely love this record. Songs have a good dance tune to them, and it sounds like a Yes or Genesis album. Fantastic work, I don't see how it can be hated.

Meh, I've always loved this album as part of their collected work. I certainly enjoy it more than any post Process of Belief album until True North. As an old punk rocker, I think thou dost protest too much, this album is weird, either you got it or you didn't. I got it and loved it and when I heard others ostracise me for that belief I only liked it more. Like I was justified because they didn't get it, but I wasn't really because all music is subjective. You can play all of these songs in a punk style and get everyone to love them, but you lose the soul of this album when you do. It's a weird album and only the weirdos truly love it, but that's something. You fucking weirdo.

I'm a lifelong BR fan, and a huge music fan overall (going from the Platters to Bad Religion to Cardi B). Since first getting my hands on a cassette of this, I always wish they would go back and have another take at recording this. Some songs are really good as is, but a few could use a little cleanup. I have wondered if that was because it was such a big departure and they were really at the early stages of honing their core sound.

The punk scene is where freedom is preached, but when it comes to someone trying to do things their way is where that freedom ends. This proves that most punks are just sheeple. You can piss them off really quick by being yourself and not the version that they draw what is like to be yourself. Not just Bad religion proved this point, but many other bands that just were loved by punks and all of a sudden they were called sell outs because they had different ideas. With this on sight I have to agree with the line "Punk's not dead it just deserves to die"
@SirJoelsuf1
@SirJoelsuf1 Жыл бұрын
Word. Bad Religion made a song about that very observation called "No Direction." It's on Generator. The last line in it LITERALLY says: "I don't believe in self-important folks who preach/no Bad Religion song can make your life complete/Prepare for rejection, you'll get no direction from me." This is exactly why Bad Religion is one of my favorite bands but I detest the Punk "scene." Bad Religion KNOWS that the stuff their lyrics are just their dumb opinions on the world. They've known that for a VERY long time. The Punk scene? No different than the tradcon Fundamentalists they claim to dislike. If you don't agree with 100% of their dumb opinions, then your dumb opinion is "a threat." I'm good on all that nonsense, I'll think for myself. George Carlin said it best: The ONLY thing Americans are good at is waging war on stuff. No matter who you are. Punk scene is no different. Even HIPPIES were warlike.

This is from the vinyl and it sounds a little off center or warped. You have to understand the influence of the Damned on these bands. Check the Vandals or TSOL (Beneath the Shadows) and you can see how this fits in with the other psych goth punk stuff.

I absolutely love this album. I never understood the hate by critics and fans, nor the Band disowning this record and never championing this album live. It was ahead of its time and as much as they wanted to ditch the keys and acoustic guitars on future albums, I found that without this album and their first record “how can hell be any worse” they wouldn’t have the skate/pop punk sound they would later be known for. I think BR should reissue this and own that they made this album. This is more punk than the bands of the time regurgitating the same songs and sounds over and over, and all the sound alike bands.

The first song reminds me of a cross between Van Halen and Bad Religion. I'm a HUGE fan of the band and proud to call some of them personal friends. I was talking to Jay and Greg after a show one day and asked them where I could hear this album (back in 1996ish) and they were totally embarrassed they had ever released this. Now that I'm hearing it, I get it. But it's still part of their history.... and for that, I think it's awesome.

most of the comments are positive, so it's funny to note that the first narrow minded people are BR members themselves, since they always bash this album for not being "punk" enough, when instead it's actually quite good.

They were ambitious in their early years. I always enjoyed hearing hardcore bands with a hint of striving toward a bigger and more complex style. This was a huge departure at the time that may have been unrecognizable but now it undeniably sounds like Bad Religion. Past the dated synthesizers you can hear the evolution of what they would become and this album as a whole is better than some of the albums of their later years.

I think I spent much of my youth searching for the elusive second BR album. When I finally played it I lived it so much! Don't understand why the band disowns it so much. A very different direction yet so very well written/performed. Happy 30th year ITU and myself!! Listening to this now! Tempting to open my ltd edition BR boxed set to give it a spin!

Because first album HCHBAW sold better, and this happy rocker album doesn't fit in the hard/ aggressive/tortured idea they shaped when playing hardcore; which sold better... Money, money... Anyway, it's a good album. Very good. Maybe should have stayed in the psych rock mood.

This is incredibly good, ambitious and daring for what was a young band at the time. What’s interesting is prog was dying because of punk surge of the late seventies. Genesis even tried their hand (and failed) with a song called “whodunnit”

@Christopher Bingham or maybe they realised cheesy synths uninteresting lyrics and using the exact same delivery for your space themed prog rock album wasnt very smart. This is not a pinkerton this is a father of all
@JohnDoe-le7ml
@JohnDoe-le7ml Жыл бұрын
@@guyfauks2576 uninteresting lyrics? The lyrics are about substance abuse that was taking place in the band. What do you think "Chasing the Wild Goose" means? Lyrically it reads like a guy who gave up everything just to get drunk. Billy Gnosis is literally a story about Brett Gurewitz's drug use with Billy Gnosis being the alter-ego that he would assume. Sure, not every song is a banger, but you can say that about most BR albums or even just albums in general. Yes, the spacey prog rock sound is very dated even by 80s standards, but listen to the more recent versions of Gnosis and Dichotomy in their shows from the 2010's that aren't buried in synths, and those songs really don't seem out of place at all.

All these views, all these likes, all these comments and no one is showing any love for Losing Generation, which is the best track on the album. So sad this hasn't ever played live, it would kick ass with their modern sound. Imagine a shredding Gurewitz guitar solo at 27:50! Special mention to The Dichotomy, the second best song on the album, but that's already got a lot of love.
