I’ve seen plenty of posters on buses here in Australia at the time. But I guess Fox was just too preoccupied with the Disney merger to properly market Bad Times to be the hit it deserved to be. And it makes me sad, this is my 2nd favourite 2018 film after Spider-Verse. Same thing happened to Widows with Fox giving up on marketing. Both of these movies could have been Oscar contenders, damn it!

I discovered this movie only last year. I’d never heard of it before then. I was visiting my parents when I found the blue ray, unopened and still plastic wrapped, near the bottom of a 5 for $5 bin at goodwill. I threw it in my cart because I collect movies. When I opened it I saw it had a blue ray and DVD copy so I left the dvd for my parents and took the blue ray for myself and forgot about it. A month or so later my parents called me and were like “Holy shit, have you watched that Bad Times movie? It’s GREAT!” Only then did I remember it and sat down to watch it. And if that story isn’t a perfect analogy for just how overlooked this movie is and was idk what is. This movie is so good on so many levels and yet it got nothing. No marketing, No notoriety, no recognition. I don’t even know if it broke even at the box office. Everyone involved with this movie should’ve been nominated for something. Actors, writers, designers, everyone. I recommend this movie to everyone, especially anyone who says Dakota Johnson can’t act.

What is god? My guess is that it's Will...and life, in all it's variety, IS that Will. You see, in my opinion, both the creator and creation is one in the same. I was so mad that this movie tanked at the box office. I saw it twice in theaters, and I really really love it. I hadn’t really thought much about what the movie says about God, but you make some interesting points. My take on the movie is that it is asking what is truth and is it always important. Father Flynn isn’t actually a priest, but that doesn’t matter because his forgiveness still meant something. The person in the tape did something bad, but ultimately it is deemed more important for society that the person be seen as a hero. That last point reminded me of The Dark Knight, which says that it was more important for Gotham to see that hero in Harvey Dent, even though he wasn’t actually one. I think the points about God and truth go hand in hand, because this movie also reminded me of Life of Pi, which says that whether or not God is real doesn’t matter, what matters is that the thought gives people something to hope for and cling to. I guess the great thing about this movie is that different people can have different takes on the movies themes and messages, and yet they can all center around the same principles.

I saw this at an early screening with some critics and the director. It was one of those movies that the audience didn't appreciate on their original view. I hope it grows over time, because this was such a fantastic film. Reminds me of tarantino's best qualities, yet a fresh twist with goddard's direction.

Thank you for making a video about this film! I thought that God was present in the film almost as a bystander. The people in the hotel are humanity. Billy is the devil (seductive, arrogant, and reminding everyone of their sins). When he is literally gambling people's lives, the power goes out as if to say "stop it!". The church are Darlene, Miles, and Father Flynn. Darlene and Miles are true humble believers (the only people who prayed in the entire film) and the preist who is there as a reminder of God ("because sometimes a man's memory is more important..." [because the preist has a memory problem, the inspiration a leader provides is more important than what they can physically do, Flynn cares about his brother's sacrifice]. What I understood from this film is that we need to help each other out. You cannot rely on family (Rose chose Billy over her sister), on the government (D.C. literally told Seymour not to interfere with a suspected kidnapping), on business (the hotel management couldn't care less for ANYONE except their gains). We must rely on each other's humanity and compassion for salvation. I believe Miles died peacefully because of a lie he was told out of compassion. Darlene, being the most oppressed person in the hotel is able to identify a desperate need for compassion and pushes Flynn to "help him!".

Also I believe Goddard concludes that a Priest is not necessary to confess sins to God. Darlene is Lutheran. The Lutheran Church was formed after splitting from the Catholic Church. Darlene understands that Miles just needs to confess. Ok, I'm done.

Loved this film, agree it was underrated. My favorite element/storyline from the film, which I wish was a bittt more fleshed out, was the Billy Lee/Rosie [and also of course bringing in Emily] storyline...Having just finished the screenplay for the first time, and hoping it might have some cut material from that part of the plot [which it did, but very very little, and nothing that really clarified], there's a few things I wonder if anyone else, having seen the film a few times, might feel a bit more certain about: So, okay, in a similar fashion to people obsessing over what 'real' historical figure might be on the film, which I felt was ultimately unimportant to the plot, what was relevant was only that you knew what TYPE of person they had on the film [along with his earlier mentioned "kindness" to Miles being the reason he kept it], I felt that people getting really into the idea that in this 'universe' Rosie was supposed to be the murderer of the Tate household was missing the point, in a way. First of all, they do specify in the finished film [though interestingly, NOT in the screenplay] that the murder victims were a local wealthy married couple. While Billy Lee does say things like "Did you tell 'em what she did?", to Emily, in reference to Rose, the implication is that she did what she did under the influence of Billy Lee. HOWEVER, an interesting, blink-and-you-miss it tidbit in the film (but again, NOT the script) is that the couple was known to run some kind of outreach program for 'homeless and troubled youths' (not a direct quote, and it's not in the script so don't have one). So that got me thinking that Rose had some kind of connection to these people, perhaps when she first fled Alabama to California she was... involved in this program? It seems odd to specify that detail without it having any meaning. The only other tiny piece of information I have in relation to it, this element being IN the screenplay, but as far as I recall, not visible in the film, is that when it describes the quick cut/flashback to Rose standing on the lawn, over the body of the murder victim, behind her we are supposed to see a 'Man' looking through the glass, observing her what she is up to...the suggestion, naturally, being that this is Billy Lee, checking her progress, because presumably, if it was the husband looking through the window at Rose standing over his wife's corpse, he wouldn't be so calm and still. OKAY, so...sorry, I realize this is a disorganized paragraph, but if anybody has actually read his far: Did you guys have any thoughts on the people Rose killed, why she did it, whether it was under the direction of Billy or whether his inspiring the 'violence' in her just caused her to run off and do it on her own? Do you think she was supposed to have a motive? What did you think of the Billy Lee/Rose storyline in general, and was I the only one who found that little cult "Who is God? etc aspect of the storyline so gripping, as it seems so many people focus more on other storylines, especially the one that for me was the most forgettable, that being Laramie Seymour Sullivan/Agent Broadbeck??

I kick myself for being unable to watch BTAER in the theater. I had a lot going on at the time with virtually no free time. But as I loved everything I’d seen/heard of the film- I knew I’d buy it on home video [which I did when it released]; and OMG- it’s SO good! 🤗 I was grinning ear-to-ear from start to end. It’s similar to how I felt my first time watching Pulp Fiction- reaffirming my love of cinema; BTAER is such an underrated theatrical masterpiece.

I've seen this movie and this video more times than I can count. This was a movie that has never left my mind since watching it for the first time in 2018. I also still to this very day believe this is Chris Hemsworths best role in film. I think he is a great Thor but this is very different.

Honestly, I was a bit disappointed in the movie. It has some really, and I mean, really good scenes in it. But the end just ruins it all for me. Now, I loved Billy Lee. He was a great character. Now, did I like him in THIS movie? No. I thought that once he arrived at the El Royale, the tone of the movie shifted vastly. He just didn't fit there. It made the movie into this "spectacle" thriller, that it wasn't. It had so many interesting things in it, but all of that was pushed aside once Billy Lee showed up. Like Roby, I love antagonists like Billy Lee. He made some good points, and while he may fit into the theme of the movie (which by the way, I didn't get while watching the movie. At least the one according to Roby), he just didn't fit the narrative. To me, he felt pointless. He felt like the character writer just put in because he couldn't invent enough interesting things happening in the hotel itself. All the scenes involving the "backroom" with the windows to every room, were amazing. They were easily the best ones in the movie, and the most memorable. The problem is, in the end of the movie, the room doesn't even play the role. The only role it plays is the mcguffin (very Pulp Fiction style, to the point of ad nauseam) as the video tape. Other than that, the most interesting and unique aspect of the movie is not utilized at all in the last hour of the film. Instead, it turns into this weird cult spectacle, while amusing and really entertaining, just did not fit in with the rest of the movie, which was much more interesting and unique. In short, I enjoyed El Roale, but I think it was overlooked for a reason.

Emily has a very little patience for Miles' El Royale "Two State"-speech. Maybe something about choosing a side given a strictly binary choice doesn't appeal to her. She then randomly picks a room and writes "fuck you" in the guestbook. Other religious references (probably coincidences though): El is "God" in Hebrew, Royale may be an allusion to Jesus, the "King of Kings" or "King of the Jews". Miles is stabbed in the ribs, like Jesus. The Line dividing the El Royale is made of wood. Miles dies while lying on it.

I think in a small way he does answer: the only character to ask for guidance instead of pretending to be God or begging for his forgiveness instead of just believing that God forgives and the character who doesn’t try to be a Christ like character and save someone is Darlene. Then the fake Father, whom she for some reason bonds with and trusts because the priest outfit makes people ignore things about them as he foreshadowed. She seems to represent Gods judgement in a way. She witnessed the old man do something selfless and which benefitted him in no way by offering forgiveness to the maintenance worker, which allowed him to die accepting forgiveness. Forgiveness is a two way street, God can offer it, but you have to accept it or else you never truly believe yourself to be forgiven.

I’d also like to point out the angel metaphor you came up with tracks also in the fact that angels in the bible aren’t just watchers and listeners, but gods soldiers also. Fun Fact for those who have come across this video and others like this as many lead the same way in the portion with the fake priest and Miles not having being absolved of his sins. In the Catholic religion it is possible in someone's time of need and emergency ( seen present in the film with Miles ) a person can in fact absolve someone of their sins ( specifically it dictates the person must at least be anointed to be able to provide communion to others yet that is here nor there) The case is, in someone time of dying need and a priest or Holy member cannot be present a follower of the faith can absolve someone of their sins.

Would love to hear your thoughts on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, there are a lot of bizarre similarities between these two movies. I really enjoyed this because it essentially expands on the religious allegory of redemption and the idea of "do you deserve to be redeemed" that Pulp Fiction and OUATIH explore with their characters.

I didn't make it through the entire film. I read a summary of the plot and thanked my lucky stars I had. I am not into fatalism, or nihilism. And by the time I had stopped watching the body count had reached the point that I had nobody to root for. I know. That's a terrible measurement to use for any sort of entertainment. But it is mine. 1) It is HIGHLY implied in the movie that John F. Kennedy is on the tape, in almost the same way it was implied in Pulp Fiction that the suitcase contained the holy grail. 3) The one listening to the guests beside FBI was _management_ obviously, duh. 2) _Management_ are a wealthy group of people that blackmail influential people like politicians and businessmen, what more do you need to know?

Loved this movie. I recognized the questions and themes related to God. I thought that the writer, Goddard, was a lapsed Catholic or was questioning his relationship with God. There is also the politics of the time period. Sullivan's dismissive attitude toward Darlene; was it because of race or gender. He was FBI under racist Hoover. It was not unheard of for the FBI to bug establishments where the politicians and the well known hung out. Hoover watched Bobby Kennedy, he could not stand Kennedy. I believe it was Bobby Kennedy on the tape. I also think that the "management" was the mafia; they were also after Bobby Kennedy. Plus many places in Vegas were owned by the mafia. In the first few minutes clues are given for the entire story. Sullivan's night time prayer foreshadows his death. Nixon talking about Vietnam which happens to be the source of Miles' pain and the story of the murdered doctor and his wife inform us of something foreboding. Both Darlene and Father Flynn are conflicted, one because of abuse the other because of illness. Darlene, who confronts Billy Lee, and Father Flynn, who confronts Billy Lee, both eventually find themselves. Darlene, whom the Father admires, forces Father Flynn into the role of an actual Priest thus giving Miles peace of mind. I believe Goddard is signifying the need to believe in God for peace.

I was totally with it until we get fully introduced to Chris Hemsworth, then it gets boring, repetitive, and begins to feel its 2 1/2 hour runtime. One of my biggest letdowns last year

I Love the movie, and I love Chris in that role. Contrary to you I did love the whole third act, it was a game changing moment and the movie just kept moving foward (straight line) when he appeared in it, until near the end with the last flashback from Miles... But you are making a interesting point that I've read from others too. I think Chris was great here and he wasn't the problem, in my humble opinion the problem for what I can see it was because the director decided to introduce Billy Lee too late in the movie and he appeared out of nowhere because he was there just because Rose called him, he wanted to take her back and he also wanted to know if Emily had told anybody about the homicide Rose recently commited. He was so used to toy people, and being the sadistic person he was he saw the opportunity to "play" with the rest of the characters... Billy Lee wasn't a character meant to scare or rather intimidate the audience like a serial killer psychopath, his character (Billy Lee) didn't had to much screen time or backstory in the movie to portray the character in that direction. It was more that he was evil because he had a god complex, he was this charismatic manipulative cult leader, that with his charismatic manipulative personality basically brainwashed his weak minded followers, and they were willing to do anything for him. Anything he told them to do, they were willing to do without hesitation, they were willing to kill for him, like Rose did. (same as Mason's followers or other cult leader's followers).And that of course makes him a dangerous man.. The scene from his backstory, where he's "preaching" to his followers, they showed his character doing something that Manson used to do on his hippie cult with the girls, some of them yeah underage girls and that's one of the creepy aspects of Billy Lee (in real life the actress that played the role of his girlfriend was a bit older than 21 years old but in the movie she looked underage I don't know if that was one of the reason the director chose her, but it could have been)... Billy Lee was multi-layered, he was charming, entertaining, and at times he was downright scary. Besides the reasons I mention above, what also made Billy a scary man it's that he was a "calm" guy on the surface, most of the time, but he did showed some fits of rage on the roulette table and when that happen we were able to see his true personality ... But you have your point of view and opinion and I completely respect that, everybody has diferent tastes😉 ✔English it's not my native tongue, I hope you were able to understand what I wrote, sorry if you didn't 🙈

Going into this video, I hated this movie. The plot felt contrived and there were way too many things that were set up that amounted to literally nothing, and the conflict resolution (SPOILERS: the bellboy's history as a sniper) came out of left field. But I'm here, with an open mind. Convince me.
