Bad typography has ruined more than just the Oscars

How bad graphic design changed award shows, elections, and your medicine cabinet.
The 2017 Oscars ended with a pretty shocking mix-up. Announcer Warren Beatty incorrectly named La La Land as the Best Picture winner, and the mistake wasn't revealed until crew members had already started giving their acceptance speeches. A lot of things went wrong for the snafu to happen the way it did. But what if typography was one of them? A better announcement card design could have made for a very different Academy Awards show - not to mention a much less embarrassing Miss Universe show for Steve Harvey back in 2015. But the implications of bad typography don't end there: poorly designed ballots in the 2000 presidential election arguably could have swayed the outcome, and illegible type on medicine bottles could be causing nearly 500,000 cases of drug misuse per year in the U.S.

Hey Vox, love your video but, it was mostly bad layout/grid rather than just typography. There's a diference, Typography is more the type of font that you use (in simple terms), and layout is how the text is displayed in the object, like a magazine cover or the card from oscars.

turns out graphic design IS important. Sadly it’s rare that a client is whiling to pay for this kind of thinking. A key thing to understand for designers watching this: the answer, the solution isn’t the whole story. you have to be able to sell that solution (often before you’ve made it) to a client who is very likely more interested in saving money or impressing their boss. Ways to do that is fully understand the clients problem and business (it may have nothing to do with users or the design), get in early, don’t wait to be picked and finally, learn how to be interested and listen *mic drop*

I work in design, and frankly I wouldn't blame the designers. Often times brands/organizations become so obsessed with emphasizing their brand that they don't consider what they risk. For example, the original Oscar award card had the logo on top, which was obvious because they wanted to emphasize their brand over the actual information necessary. The same is with the original Target Pharmacy bottle. I've dealt with brands who become very touchy about their logos and how they are represented, down to the size and color you can make their logo and where they want it placed. It's really annoying to deal with.

Hi, I would love to have this content captioned in portuguese so I could show it to my students. KZbin has a tool that allows any community member to contribute in such translations and I could do it myself, but you have that feature disabled in this video. I understand that you may have concerns over the quality of such translations, and that's probably the reason why its disabled. But is there any way that we can make that possible? Vox's content is always very well-researched and useful. It's a pity that we don't have this content available for wider audiences, such as non english speakers. There are many cases on youtube of big channels that use this community translation feature with great success. thanks

Where did you that it was design by committee? It appears the Academy was cutting costs this year. They nixed the costlier formal press conference and replaced it with an online announcement. Then they discontinued outsourcing the envelope design and did it in-house with a committee where no one on the committee had graphic design experience. Technology is great when it saves time and money if it is in the hands of someone with the proper knowledge and experience. But when it is in the hands of rank amateurs who think they know what they are doing when they really don't, you get atrocious results like this god-awful-looking website. www.faceslappingnatural.com/ Several different fonts, bad grammar, outrageous claims, underlining, out-of-aspect ratio pictures, insulting language ("Warning: Sell to right person only, If you don't have money, don't buy it!! because it is expensive. It is designed with love and understanding.") The webpages just hurt your eyes. This store got news coverage in local and national television. It was permanently closed within months.

Medications can be very expensive in the U.S.. It can cost up to $15 or more per pill. So the physician prescribes only the exact number of pills needed for treatment. Insurance companies will not pay for extra pills that may be discarded. It's more cost effective for pharmacies to acquire medications in bulk and then dispense them in custom amounts to suit the prescription.

Warren Beatty was given the wrong envelope. He was mistakenly given the Best Actress envelope with Emma Stone in _La La Land_ on the card. There are two sets of envelopes for each category. One set is positioned backstage at the left. The second set is positioned backstage at the right. Presenters can enter the stage either on the left or the right. One copy of the envelope is given to the presenter and the second copy on the opposite side of the stage is supposed to be immediately destroyed. The accountant was distracted and forgot to destroy the second copy. It was then mistakenly given to Beatty and he was confused after he pulled out the card and tried to read it. Faye Dunaway just looked at the movie title and read that out loud.

It's been known for decades that lower case (not capital letters) is easier to read - that's in english - I don't know for other languages/scripts! When I was training to be a graphic designer we were taught to make it look nice (and often used too-small text because it looked good) but we were never taught about readability (which is very odd because graphic design is to communicate - often vital information) - I hope this has changed, but according to the samples shown here: whole words in capital letters are still being used where it'd be far more readable in large upper & lower case = capital letters where needed (ever? But our habit is to use them for names and the start of a new sentence = a signal) and the rest in lower case.

Why do they keep saying Warren Beatty? it was Faye Dunaway who read the wrong name! ... I guess it was because he was the one who was confused by the typography. Answered my own question. Never mind. 😉

Indeed. Warren Beatty paused with the card, saw that there was something wrong and was trying to figure out what to do with it when Faye Dunaway jumped in and read the first word she saw.

Dear 2017, I am from the future. If you think reading out the wrong name during the Oscars is bad, just wait until 2022. Also, not Oscar-related, look out for 2020. You might as well just stay at home the entire year. Chances are... you will.

It's just marketing plan! This same thing happened in Miss Universe! It worked! Miss Universe received more attention after that. So Oscar copied this same plan. That's it.

The user of a prescription bottle certainly DOES need the Rx number if they reorder the prescription over the phone. The pharmacy will ask the user for the number when someone calls in a renewal.

The prescription bottle piece completely avoids the possibility of a pharmacy mistake, when they put a different drug in a bottle. Other countries do not have this problem because meds are sold in their original packaging, be it blisters or bottles or even ampoules. In the U.S. you can only buy non-prescription meds in the manufacturer's packaging.

The alternate card design at 1:42 is still not okay I read the 1st runner up instead of the actual winner first so...yeah there’s that. I think they should have put the winner first and in larger writing ✍️.

But the host still has to eliminate contestants, i.e., 2nd runner up, then 1st runner up, then the winner. Adjusting it so that all the information runs downward ensures that the host knows there's still information to give out, i.e., who to crown Miss Universe 2015.

Yup, I also told the same to my family, it was a bad bad designed card. There is no much need to have a huge logo of the oscars on top, is like signing a facebook comment with your name, unnecessary. And if you use the seme font, play with the sizes. Great great video!

People try to be different. To put their mark on things. Which is not usually ideal in moments like this when being able to glean information quickly matters most. I can't tell you how many times I see business signs or adverts that have tiny text, fancy fonts that are unreadable, or concentrate on a selling gimmick without plainly conveying what they're selling. And trying to figure all of this out as I'm driving down the road? Don't companies want business?

wow man this information is really important! My precious granny has a problem with her pills from time to time because of bad typography on her medicines and i always worry how she's dealing with that when i'm not there(( (also please don't blame Warren. I can see clear that he was confused and Faye was like "mehh whatever". And of course it's organiser's blame in general).

I work as a nurse in the Netherlands and here we don't use bottles for pills but the box it comes in. Much easier to read and most have a different design. Also there is now a system in which the patient gets prepackaged bags with all the pills included per day and hour via a machine. They are little bags containing every pill per intake in one roll so there will no more be a mixup that way.

2:01 it is absolutely ridiculous that people got this wrong. There's literally an arrow pointing at the dot for each candidate! Sure, it may not be the best design but if you can't figure out who you're voting for then maybe you shouldn't be allowed to vote at all...
@desertrose0601

Rhys welding I don't know what the actual ballot looked like, but the one they showed here had 10 holes and 20 candidates, so it's entirely unclear how that is actually supposed to function.
@rhyswelding3657

desertrose0601 it isn't at all, if you look at the form at 2:10 there is literally a arrow pointing to the circle. There aren't 20 candidates there's ten tickets each ticket has two people but there's only ten candidates for president. The other ten are VP. It says that on he form. I stand by my comment. If you can't work out how this form works you shouldn't be allowed to vote on something so serious

I was going to say a similar thing, for the average user the ballot paper seems obvious enough. For those with say a visual impairment, or other possible considerations, there ought to alternatives to voting at the ballot station anyway (postal ballot, proxy voting, perhaps online voting). The only thing I didn't understand is that each possible choice of vote gives a vote each to two separate candidates? What if you like one but not the other? I just assumed though that this was a weird quirk of United Statesian elections and that a US voter would understand this aspect.

For a high pressure event it would probably make you really confused and just blurt out what was given to you. Writing the winner in larger text would make this mistake more obvious and immediately says "you got the wrong card". (If my grammar is messed up, sorry English isn't my first language)
