I saw BR in the theater in '82. It wasn't that the audience needed the 'man-splaining' of Ford's voiceovers-- But what they DID accomplish was firmly establishing this piece as "retro," before "retro" was a thing. And THAT was very cool at the time

You're right but Nielson was immitating the deadpan narration style of a million serious detective TV shows and movies. (Jack Webb as Sgt Joe Friday on Dragnet was so deadpan you might check his pulse.) Before he was a comedy actor, he played dozens of such straight parts himself. That was the brilliance of Airplane! which came before by the same film-makers, using actors like Nielsen, Lloyd Bridges, and Robert Stack, actors who had rarely done anything but somber drama, doing wacky comedy with the exact same delivery they used in serious roles. Even Mel Brooks' very cinematic film spoofs coming a few years before like Blazing Saddles, the closest comparison to Airplane!, used all comedy actors, not dramatic ones. People like my Dad who grew up on those actors couldn't believe it, today that would be like Daniel Day Lewis doing a Will Ferrell movie. Nielson of course made a whole second career out of that.

It wasn't necessarily Ford's relationship with Scott that made the voice-over weak. It was simply that Ford didn't want to do it. When he received the script (that had a voice-over in it), he said he wanted to strip it out to let the ideas form more organically in the audience. Scott agreed. He was contractually obliged to do the voice-over by the studio because test audiences were essentially expecting another Star Wars.

Okay, when I first saw this movie, with these voiceover, I didn't think much of it. Then when I many years later heard that Harrison Ford and hated it and thought "Why, what's so bad about it?" Fast forward a couple of years later when I got my hands on the Final Cut and after seeing that, without the voiceover, I get it now.... When we get those scenes with Deckard just staring at the dying Roy Batty, it's zings more through the heart because we only have to imagine what Deckard is thinking and at that point, he is much easier to identify with!

Even great movies frequently give exposition a good portion of the audience doesn't need. Or invented jargon is reinforced with repeated use, but can't be in Blade Runner, the dialogue is too minimal. In 40's film noir the very common narration emulates the prose in detective novels like Sam Spade & Phillip Marlow (both played by Bogart.) Explaining was the function, there's nothing unusual about that for the genre, and Blade references those movies and their era throughout. If nothing else, the "you're either a cop you're little people" comment is very oddly phrased, and if it was meant to convey a clear threat on his life, is just poorly written; it sounds more like a play on Decker's ego, if you're not a cop you're just another schlub. So that definitely needed to be more clear as to why M. Emmet Walsh's shabby desk jockey could make Ford, who displays no need for new work to get by, come back to a job he hates. "I'd rather be a killer than a victim" is possibly the clunkiest line of several, and I'm not arguing it's very well written, but I wonder if they're trying to convey that Decker is neither eloquent nor self-reflective by nature. He seems like grunt worker paid well enough to take it easy awhile, drifting along, only wants to stay out of trouble - in which case, as great as he is to watch, Ford is actually kind of miscast. He'd previously played Han Solo and Indy Jones, people expected a crafty, take charge type, another thing that probably threw audiences off at the time. He's strangely too passive even to be an anti-hero, just a cog in the machine, and that's a very unexpected thing for almost any top lead actor. IMO the VO makes it a little more clear this is not the Ford we're used to.

Kalle Mattila It was in notes from their screenings that the audience didn't understand what the hell was going on. It wasn't that they were stupid, it's that no one really knew what to make of it as a film. They weren't in tune with the beat of it. It was too meticulous and thick. As cliche as it sounds, it was ahead of its time. It's the kind of film that leaves you cold after an initial viewing, but a part of it burrows into your psyche. On repeat viewings, it's not just that you catch more of it, it's that you're watching it with more intuition of the setting, the scope of it, etc., which gives a greater feel of the characters. It's not such a bizarre thing upon a revisit. That wasn't necessarily a beneficial quality when it was released. Didn't see the home video sales that we do today.

I totally agree, I think hindsight is 20/20 once everyone knows it's a beloved classic and highly influential. It would have been jarringly slow-paced and oblique to audiences EVEN IF they weren't coming off of high-energy sci-fi movies like Star Wars, Close Encounters, and even Ridley Scot's preceding Alien, is far more accessible, relatable, and plot-driven. Critics didn't get it either - they were wrong, but it's understandable in context. Also home video was still very new and expensive, so the idea of rewatching movies at home a mere few months after theater release to get more out of it wasn't even a thing. There are plenty cases of studio bone-headed changes but IMO this isn't really one of them. Personally, as detailed in an earlier response above, I STILL like the narration.

I actually quite like how the narration harkens back to older detective noir films. Ford's voice is perfect for it, no matter how "bored" he sounds. That, combined with the film's setting, makes its identity all the more special in this regard. That said, in the context of being proper cinema, the narration does still dampen the film down in that it doesn't allow the audience to think, something that this kind of film requires in order to be good. Also... I don't believe I need to tell you how well the ending works with the story, no matter which way one looks at it.

It was put in there to offer a possible explanation as to why Batty, who's been shown before as being willing to kill without hesitation, and who's relationship with Deckard up until that point has been one of enemies, would suddenly save Deckard. Deckard also killed Priss who was one of Battys closest (and last remaining) companions, so the logical assumption would be that Batty would have every reason to simply let Deckard fall to his death. Without a possible explanation offered it feels like Batty saving Deckard is in there just because the script dictates that as the hero Deckard has to survive. It feels (at least to some) very out of character for Batty. Like if at some point in RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK Belloq suddenly saved Indys life for no particular reason.

I know a lot of people prefer "show, don't tell" but a lot of hard-boiled detective stories are set in the first-person POV and that is often reflected in adaptations other works influenced by them. Examples: -Farewell My Lovely -Gone Baby Gone -Spenser For Hire -The Rockford Files -Philip Marlowe: Private Eye

I have a love/hate relationship with the voice over... I think it adds to the film noir feel of the movie and Ford being bored about it really seems to work in favor of the overall feel. Plus it is useful to people who have trouble following (kids, non-native English speakers, neurodivergents, etc), but it's also nice to just watch the film without having it constantly explained to you... both cuts have their merits, and all of the various endings do too...

I may be the only one, but I never thought the voice over was that bad. Yea Ford didn't seem exactly enthusiastic while doing it but some of it is unforgettable. After Hauers Tears in Rain. Fords voice over saying maybe in those last moments He loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life, anybody's life , even my life. That still resonates in my mind as I grow old.

You won’t feel it if you weren’t there in the theatre in 1982. I saw this with the voice over and that’s what I expect. Not only does it belong in a film noir, Ford’s voice has always been his strong point. A kind of world weariness and, more than his looks or acting, the reason that he will always be that character, regardless of which one we’re talking about.

Exactly. It's really just elitist people trying to make themselves feel better by pretending like this is terrible. Harrison Ford does not even sound "bad" - I've heard plenty of narration in my years and this sounds fine: the "narration" is supposed to be Deckard's inner-voice, not some over-the-top stuff. I kinda love & hate the voice over at the same time. Its cool because the narration gives it the film noir detective style, but at the same time you really don't need it. Especially in the tears in rain scene because the meaning is there on screen you can see Roy loved life to the very end & the narration has to spell it all out to us. I also remember in high school in my TV pro class i made a blade runner inspired short film & i added narration to it & i literally read it like Harrison Ford did here like i didn't care, gave reference to my favorite movie.
