Swifty, with all that expensive equipment, you should consider a UPS. It's a power supply that acts as a battery when electricity fails but more important, it catches the fluctuations of the electricity, so high peaks from lightning does not harm your equipment.

I'm also in Florida, I unplug eveything during a thunderstorm ever since my pc got fried back in 2007. I had a surge protector and everything including the network was routed through it. Lighting traveled through the coax to the cable modem through the patch cable and fried my mobo.

Oh Merc, regardless of surge protector you should always turn your electronics off during storms!! They have tornados in Florida as well, double scary.

Swifty if a lightning bolt strikes close enough having your computers off won't help they'll still get fried. Just make sure you have surge protectors and there are also some 30 minute batteries you can get for your computers so you can finish what you're doing if you happen to lose power.

Some of the surge protector manufacturers give their product lifetime warranty. For example if a thunder breaks your computer when using the surge protector they compansate up to 50k worth of devices broken.

To clarify, each brand of surge protector can absorb a certain level of surge--but their absorption power fades both over time and as they absorb surges. So if your surge protector gets hit by 100 small surges, its absorption may be totally depleted. If your surge protector gets hit by 1 massive surge, its absorption may be instantly depleted. TL;DR: If there's a storm in your area, just unplug your computer. If the comp is plugged in at all you are risking it.

Swifty if u are worried about lightning damaging ur computers, u can buy special power packs that will completly protect ur tech from surges or "dirty power"

Swifty, you need something called a UPS. It is like a backup battery for your computer so if the power goes out you can save whatever you're doing.

I live in Missouri, Tornado Valley. My computer has been hit by lightning a few times, surge bar melted real bad every time. Comp still works. Rawr

This is for Hotted. After the lightning strikes you have to count 3 seconds for the lightning should be around 1 kilomenter away, cause the sound travels 343 meter per second :D

What he's saying is you start counting as soon as you see the lightning to determine how far away it is and since light travels so fast you don't really need to take into account the time it takes for you to see the light from it.

Count as soon as lightning strikes until the next one strikes and it will tell you how close the strike was to you. The more seconds you count the more miles it is away. For example Lightning strike - 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10, lightning strike sound again. It was a total of 10 miles away from you.

I will say this. I had a surge protector many years ago during one of the nastiest lightning storms i've ever seen and my computer still got fried... :( so do they work.. it's 50/50 I've had some pretty bad ones where i live now and the surge protector saved my computer countless times.. I think it really depends on how old the surge protector is.. but then again i'm not 100% really sure how it works - lol that's my two cents!

Yah it was crazy that day. Right after I tossed down my money for the xbox one at gamestop it came down while we all stood outside and watched it strike the trees across the parking lot. Was mad crazy!!!!

1 second 1 mile lol, seriously if you assume that light travels instantaneously, which you can as the time it travels can be easily skipped, then what you're left with is the speed of sound, which is roughly 340 m/s, so when you hear the thunder 1 second after the flash, it was 340 meters away from you.

When you see the lighning you count and when you hear it you multply it by 0.343. For example you heard it after 5 seconds its 5x0.343 wich is 1.7 kilometers from you that is 1.07 miles from you..

One time i was sleeping, and in my sleep my eyelids turns bright neon blue, so i woke up, my room was filled with light, then i heard the loudest thunder ive ever heard, it was crazyness made all kinds of alarms go off, and even my friend from a mile away woke up from it, next day, the tree behind my window had a part of it cracked and falling off
