listened to this album while tripping on liquid LSD on the beach, years ago. Actually the day I met my girlfriend of 7 years. the love of my life. I peaked during this song and I was like spiritually climaxing throughout the whole thing, straight up felt like my soul left my body on an escalator to the heavens...like a full on passage from my being to the most high..I must have loooked wild to anyone else cos I had tears rolling down my face and my hands raised to the sky gyrating and shaking in ecstasy. This song will always mean the world to me

You really only listened to the hook on this one, didn't you? The boys play cool, work wonderfully with dissonance and close tones, and varied tempo. Is it the kind of overly technical jazz that takes endless years of studied theory that is impressive to only jazz players? No. It's something that is technically impressive, and still great to listen to. Oh shit, they have a refrain in a jazz song. How dare they! How dare they I say!

would you stop critizicing a point that i didn't even raise, please? horrible discussion behaviour. i never said anything about refrains or hooks, so stop that nonsense. my point was that BBNG is only 'technically impressive' to the casual contemporary music listener who is not really acknowledged to jazz, classical, -in general- instrumental music; which is exactly BBNG's main target group, right? in reality, this is average at best. if it wasn't for this niche, i doubt they would make it .
@staxstix11 жыл бұрын
i came off a little rude in these comments, my point still stands though. i don't doubt they have a great future, people like their stuff and it's not unoriginal. my point was just that i don't get people jumping on the hype train of 'impressive jazz execution' while i don't get what's impressive about mediocrity. they are the only known ones covering this sort of combination though, which is the sole reason anyone has ever heard of them if we're brutally honest.
@Rigby12025 жыл бұрын
i wish people like you were still around on YT today, everyone's so rude and never apologizes or anything and never explains their point, hats off to you
@Phaleel5 жыл бұрын
Only ones? This is a classic Jazz "Trio." It's almost always Piano, Bass, and Drums. What are you talking about?!
@staxstix11 жыл бұрын
what i was trying to say was that people listen to it solely because they know the original tracks and then compare it to them. in that comparison, BBNG might seem special and talented, when in reality -to me- it feels like a poor mans version of the real deal. like not being good enough for proper jazz and therefore targetting for a less demanding audience that only knows its pop/hiphop genre and is easier to impress with this mediocrity. maybe i'm being a bit of a douche here, i don't know.
@edwinbeta28063 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you are being a douche, mostly. A technically proficient cover of a jazz song would be awful, impenetrable to anyone who wasn't into jazz, and to the average listener would sound nothing like the song they covered. So this approach was perfect. That being said BBNG's forays into originals really /werent/ that great Regardless of that, calling essentially all other music that isn't technically proficient even less than mediocre is pretentious as hell and completely ignorant of the talent and creativty especially that goes into (some) of it. I know you didn't explicitly call everything else mediocre, but when you call this mediocre, and this is far and away more technically proficient than the songs its covering... well.... thats a pretty clear implication to me. So yeah, a little douchey.
@staxstix3 жыл бұрын
@@edwinbeta2806 Wow, 8 years! that's some grave digging. Crazy how times have changed and I still have the same yt account haha. Interestingly, BBNG had some decent pop entries in the meanwhile - I like what they did. I was indeed being douchey, but in hindsight I wouldn't even call this album jazz. It's more about instrumental versions of popular songs. I guess that's why I was commenting the way I did, I guess back in the day I missed all the technical nuances that actually define jazz. Which doesn't mean it's bad - on the contrary: it's just something else and it's unique and just as valid.

@staxstix11 жыл бұрын
well, pulling off something more complex would be good execution. but they 'remixed' pop and hiphop music, which extremely simply layers and composition is revealed even more when played on acoustics only. any talented random musician (even amateurs i'd say) can play this stuff. i'm not saying it's bad. i just find it funny when people praise this sort of stuff and at the same time don't care about thousands of classical or proper jazz musicians, which requires way more skill than this.
@sevsthepokey10 ай бұрын
I know you’ve gotten fried plenty on this man. And it was 10 years ago. But I hope you’ve learned it’s not about “simple” and “complex,” it’s about GOOD and BAD. I know plenty of technically gifted musicians that couldn’t make a decent song to save their lives. So yeah, definitely massive douche comments.
@staxstix10 ай бұрын
@@sevsthepokey This is indeed some impressive gravedigging. And no, BBNG still doesn't do much for me, I think I like them even less now. They didn't develop any further. It's jazz for people who don't listen to jazz. The comments they made somewhen the last few years kinda disqualified them for me, and many other people, too. Zero respect for the roots and craft of jazz. There are tons and tons of many young jazz artists and bands today that go in a similar direction and do it much better :) Music is in good hands!
