Badbury Rings is an Iron Age Hill Fort located in Dorset, UK. Archaeological excavations whilst limited have revealed that it was constructed in stages from around 800 BC although the site itself was inhabited for thousands of years prior to that. As time progressed the area became part of the Durotriges Tribe territory and a number of hill forts constructed by them are found throughout the Dorset countryside. The ditches and ramparts are impressive in size considering how they must have eroded over the millennia. You can see in some shots people walking their dogs and this gives a good scale for these defences. The need for defences also indicates what a troubled time it must have been. These are no sandcastles but large scale earthworks and must have taken a large workforce many years to construct. Were there such inter-tribal wars going on that necessitated such defences, or was it more a case of tribal chiefs making a proclamation or statement about their status and ability to lead so many people? Either way the concentric rings surrounding this site of ancient settlement make a statement today. Local to the site are numerous Bronze age burial mounds and barrows. There is also crossroads of Roman Roads that intersect nearby, a Roman/British temple ruin and the Roman town of Vincocladia.
Certainly the hill fort has strategic importance. It's the highest ground for miles in every direction.
