How can I learn more about this kind of music? I'm a big fan of Mariem Hassan, Karmi Mint Abba, Ahmedou Ahmed Lowla and Mauritanian music in general. I'm a hobbyist musician myself, but this kind of music is really what makes me feel good. Do you speak Arabic?

I unfortunately do not speak Arabic and at the moment there aren't many resources available in English. There's a book called Shinqiti Folk Literature and Song but it's pretty limited in its discussion of the music, otherwise the liner notes to the compilation "Wallahi Le Zein!" and that author's blog thewealthofthewise.blogspot.com/ are the best sources. If you can read French there's a book called Musique, Honneur, et Plaisir au Sahara that's very thorough.
