It's funny how many of the comments are coming from NZ'ers. I listened to Spike on Sunday mornings when I was a kid and this brings back some fantastic memories. Thanks Spike Milligan for your amazing story telling and wild imagination. Kids these days have truly missed out

I listened to this magical story often on the radio back in the 70s in New Zealand as a youngster. I was SO fixated by the late, great, absolutely brilliant Spike Milligan's storytelling! I didn't know until years later that I share my birthday with him, the 16th of April which makes my recollections even more special. RIP Spike, a true legend of stage, screen & radio that will forever live on in our memories & imaginations. 😆💟

I don't know if this sounds silly or not but when I was little this used to scare the crap out of me when I was little. I believe it was because of Spike's over emphasized narration and the intense music. Listening to it now it's quite funny XD Yet I still have chills if I listen to it at night.

I grew up in Romania and China and had this on cassette from my...New Zealand friend! (Thank you, Kate, wherever you are...) I absolutely loved it and yes, knew it practically by heart and now about 40 years later, on a whim, I finally looked it up on KZbin. I owe so much to this recording, in many ways it taught me English better than any class could have. And even after living in the States for close to three decades I still have a core of deliciously wonderful weirdness inside me that feels more English than American (or maybe New Zealander?) and, well, Spike Milligan has something to do with it.

This brings back memories was only telling my children about this story I too use to listen on the radio when I was a young girl. I can still see myself up at the crack of dawn to hear the story in the kitchen possibly was on a Sunday going by everyone's review. Does any of your remember flick the little fire engine. I am going to see if that story out there. Use to know the stories of by heart. Also from NZ now living in Ireland. Those were the days stories on the radio and Cartoon comics tintan and all no IPADS or Mobile phones and we didn't know any different.
i was 6 years old in in 1978 one of my older sister's brought this for me as a birthday present because they know how much i love Reading and Listening to tapes but half way though the story i was so Terrified i started crying all of my sister's ruched in the Lounge to see what was wrong one of my older sister's picked me up so fast and took me too her room sat me down on her Lap and asked me what was the problem and then i told her what happened half way through the story and at the end they though the book and tape in the Rubbish Twenty years later i asked one of my older sister's what happened to the book and tape they got me for my birthday and they said i was so Terrified of the story you ended up crying so at the end we Threw it in the Rubbish simply as that and i started Loughing i said to my sister's you should have took it back to the shop and got your money back but they said back to me what at 7pm everything closed plus we couldn't wate but we did pay the shop Owner and explained what happened at the end because we had you on our back fast asleep and i was told the shop owner just took one look at me and told my sister's don't worry about it one of my sister's said we should have brought me Little house on the prairie instead or (jack and the beanstalk) Those were the days I'll never forget
