While that is true, Badlands second album was just as awesome as this one, a lot of bands went the grunge way to make it easier to turn on them. My 20 year old dumb ass owned this album in 1989 and didn't have the sense to give it a chance, it quickly fell through the cracks as I was getting very into thrash bands like metallica and anthrax. Here I am in April of 2023 sitting at my desk in my home office with this album open on a tab as my background work music. In hindsight I can really appreciate that at the peak of bubblegum hair metal these guys had the balls and integrity to dig down deep into their roots and release a bluesy 70's infused masterpiece while most bands were selling their soul for a quick buck. Respect.

This album is without a doubt one of the best hard rock albums of all time. And it's definitely Jake E. Lee's best work. And it just goes without saying Ray was just a phenomenal singer. The vocal melodies on this album are just unbelievable. This band should have been WAY bigger. I've often thought hard about why they weren't bigger and I think it comes down to two reasons. One, the musical landscape back then was just jam packed with rock bands. This was when Guns N Roses and Metallica simply ruled the rock world and there was just simply so many bands and you also had the transition from 80s rock to grunge. And two, I think this is almost a more mature form of hard rock that not everyone can appreciate. This is not "Unskinny Bop" or "We're not Gonna Take It." It's almost like a painting you would see on Night Gallery. Almost morose at times. And I love the hell out of it. I have all three albums on my phone and I keep coming back to them and just marvel at how good Badlands was.

Jake is very underrated....glad he’s once again active. Brad Gillis delivered after Randy’s passing. I saw ultimate sin tour in San Francisco...killer show.

This album was Atlantic Records biggest selling debut album up til that time- it did initially what it should have. The second album never got promoted properly and no one heard of it. These albums should be remixed and remastered to fix some of the imbalances- and rerelease them. Good music will always have an audience. These albums have a chance of doing better in a time when there is a huge vacuum of nothing; they would have no competition
@bobjoe7508 Жыл бұрын
Wait, this can't be right. Artists like Ratt who were on Atlantic had multi platinum debut albums. This album sold about 400,000 records by 1990. I see on the credits that Titanium is also listed as a record label, so I wonder if this was Titanium's biggest selling debut at the time.

Can't re-release them cause Ray gave a ton of women AIDS knowingly so they are never getting remastered

I don't remember all the details but Badlands music is under some type of lien 'cause Ray Gillen gave HIV to a few people.

Man this guy has some pipes! RIP Mr. Gillem. You really had a great thing! I never understood why this band wasn’t one of the biggest bands of the 80’s & early 90’s. Promotion & marketing problems? Bad management? Band creative differences? Or they came along just a bit too late when “alt rock” had already developed momentum? Probably a combination. Too much saturation(?) with too many rock bands trying to be too similar?! These guys stood way out to me though. They have that Led Zeppelin sound with just a bit more metal but enough melodic bluesy grit to make them a good fit between Zeppelin and Whitesnake (or similar). This is one of my top 20 favorite rock albums ever.

This album sounds so damn good. It has that nice, dry no bells and whistles type production that is damn near timeless. This is when a lot of other albums from around that could have stood up musically, but production got in the way. Bulletboys for example.

Once in awhile I play this album… I cannot even describe how High Wire is the most perfect way to open an album!!! Everything about this album is why I’m a music fan! At a time when frills & fluff were all over the place this was a grass roots work of art! I was always miffed at how they didn’t go over the way I felt they deserved. But, I feel lucky to have listened to this band!!! They were a gift! Thanks to them!!!

This is one of my top 5 absolute favorite albums in the world. I wish I would have been at an age to have seen them in concert but at least I have the music and videos. Ray did indeed leave us far too soon, but he left us with some incredibly awesome, magical music to enjoy. I hope his spirit journeys well and happiness is ever within.

purrdeekittee got the chance to see badlands when their first album came out. It was at the palace in Hollywood, and got there not long after the doors opened. The band kept getting better as the night rolled along and Rays vocals were superb. Being in the presence of Ray's vocal's live was to say the least enlightening, and turned many a head with amazement as he wailed away. Would have loved to hear his voice grow old throughout time.

Badland - Dream in the Dark lyrics I remember you, baby Like a sweet summer song Said you'd love me forever Nothing could ever go wrong Time's gone by I'm just a memory scarred I'm lost in a shadow Don't know where you are 'Cause yesterday's gone Dreams carry on Will you return my way, no Sing me a sweet, sweet song Turn out the lights And my love will burn on and on Hold me until tomorrow Dreams in the dark Dreams in the dark You pushed me, baby A little too far Turned your back on my lovin' Lick my wounds in the bars Story's been told And a lesson is learned I know where your love lies And I know where you've gone 'Cause yesterday's gone Dreams carry on Will you return my way, no Sing me a sweet, sweet song Turn out the lights And my love will burn on and on Hold me until tomorrow Dreams in the dark Baby, I know that you're leavin It's over, it's over, I know Now that My heart now is bleedin' Don't know which way to turn Run home! Dreams in the dark

Always loved this album. Even when I started listening to punk and “grunge” I would always go back. It is much more than hair metal. Gillen was incredible and Jake’s bluesy style really was stylistically different from what he did with Ozzy. Love heavy music of all styles. Could never understand why friends and hipsters were so myopic when it came to music. So called open minded. This band was great and there hasn’t been a true elite singer like Ray since.
