My Grandfather was Irish. He came to live with us in his 80's. He mostly preferred to watch old movies on AMC and almost never watched or finished watching anything I tried to put on for him. One Saturday night before I went out with my friends, I put "Road to Perdition" on for him. My Mom told me later that not only did he actually finish the movie, he was riveted the whole time. I'm sure the fact that he was a young man during this era probably had a lot to do with it.

Tom Hanks was asked in an interview what films he is proud of, which is inexplicably unpopular. He said 'Road toPerdition' is the one nobody even remembers he was in. He said part of it is that so few people ever saw it. He, like you, also thought the acting, the story, and the direction and filming was just about perfect. It is also a tribute to Hanks's range as an actor. Just think about it for a moment; the same guy stared in 'Road to Perdition' and 'Forest Gump'.

Great pick. My favorite Tom Hanks movie and my favorite Paul Newman movie all in one. I've always seen it as if it is a passing on the baton of Mr. Everyman to a new generation. And it fittingly is passed by Hanks taking out Newman with a machine gun. Good on you for making this executive decision. Hopefully there will be more, as there are so many great movies that are not getting the attention they deserve. This one is a work of cinematic art, in the music and in the visuals that give you the impression you are at the Louvre when you are watching it. Be on the lookout for the painting "The Death of Marat. You will only get a quick glimpse before it goes off to the next scene. And yeah, Daniel Craig is the bad guy, But Jude Law is the Devil. Notice how the music becomes discordant whenever Jude Law shows up in a scene. Thomas Newman was once again robbed at the Academy Awards the year this one came out. Just finished listening to your commentary and I am heartened to hear you had the same impression. One thing though, It wasn't the ocean. It was the Michigan coast side of Lake Michigan a little north of Indiana. I don't know where they actually filmed it but it looks like it does around the Grand Haven / Holland area.

The graphic novel was based in turn on the great manga Lone Wolf and Cub by writer Kazuo Koike and artist Goseki Kojima. It’s about one samurai whose family is slain by a rival clan, except his son Daigoro. There was a series of movies about him.

Sorry I'm bombing your comments. I'm from Davenport, Iowa, part of the Quad Cities. One of the other towns in our urban orbit is Rock Island, Illinois, and that's where this takes place. Rooney was named after John Looney, who ran the Quad Cities in the 20s. He owned a paper lock, stock, and barrel and used it to batter his political and financial opponents. Looney is well known here and organized crime was part of our life back then: bootleggers in the 20s and 30s, Capone played cards in Muscatine just to the south of us. Does it kind of suck that this film is how we got known? Kind of. But practically everyone here is proud. Thank you for sharing your reaction!

Great choice. A very overlooked slow burner of a film. The story is originally from a graphic novel - written by Max Allan Collins, a prolific author of all manner of books, many of which are historical crime novels - like his series on Eliot Ness, and the Untouchable. This story is actually taken from the real-life gangster family of John Patrick Looney, and his son Connor. Many of the real locations exist today - look up "History & Architecture John Looney Legend Tour" - in Rock Island Illinois Max Allan Collins grew up, and he may still be there, just a few miles up the Mississippi River, from Rock Island, in Muscatine, Iowa. For some other Paul Newman films - Hombre is a great western, and another great, overlooked film - Absence of Malice.
