The scene where Ripley threatens the eggs and the queen backs off was interesting. They formed a sort of non-verbal truce in that moment. All the queen cared about was her eggs, so Ripley and Newt could have retreated and left. And of course all the aliens (and eggs) would have been destroyed a while later in the explosion of the facility. But Ripley CHOSE to break that truce and escalate the situation. She burned up the eggs and then shot at the queen. She enraged the queen who then pursued them. All of the mayhem that followed was 100% Ripley's fault.

Aliens has a directors cut you maybe interested in. It shows additional scenes at hadleys hope before they find the Aliens. It also has some interesting scenes with automated gun turrets and a bit more with Hicks and Ripley. The biggest scene which shouldn’t have been cut IMHO is we learn Ripley had aN 11 year old daughter Amanda who passed away 2 years before Ripley was found. This scene directly sets up the quite good horror survival game Alien Isolation. Where you play as Amanda in her mid 20’s working for the company and trying to find out what happened to her mother. The game looks and feels like you are in the original movie. It even includes DLC where you can play as the original crew voiced by the actors on the Nostromo being chased by the xenomorph. Highly recommended if you are into that sort of thing.

@Move_I_Got_This those scenes were cut because the run time was over 2 and a half hours, and supposedly “no one wants to sit in a theatre for that long”. The ‘special edition’ is the version Cameron intended to be shown (that’s why he filmed those scenes), but the scenes that were cut, as you said, didn’t take too much away from the story, but they do give more context to the development of Ripley’s and Newt’s bond, and why the aliens are crawling through the ceiling to get to the group (they gave up trying to get past the sentry turrets).

Hey, Madison! This is one of the best sequels ever made! Unfortunately, you didn't see the superior SPECIAL EDITION version which has the Amanda Ripley scene, the functioning colony scene, Newt's family's discovery of the derelict ship scene, the automated gun scene, the Hudson speculation about queen ants scene and the name exchange scene. These deleted portions enhance the movie greatly and the Special Edition is the cut James Cameron and Sigourney Weaver themselves prefer! The future Ripley inhabits is implied to be a dystopic corporatocracy. The most pervasive and powerful corporate entity is the Weyland-Yutani Company, a 22nd-century version of the British East India Company of the 17th- to 19th-centuries. It is a multinational conglomerate involved in robotics, interstellar transport and terraforming with a stake in every colony world. The Company is the TRUE VILLAIN of the Alien universe. Ash and Burke were following a secret corporate mandate to obtain a xenomorph specimen in order to profit from research and weaponization. In the "AvP" films, you actually meet the company founders before their merger, Mr. Weyland and Ms. Yutani. Some trivia: The picture of Ripley's elderly daughter in the Special Edition is actually Sigourney Weaver's real-life mother! The late Al Matthews, who played Sgt. Apone, was a true-blue Marine who was the first black man to be promoted to Sergeant in the Corps during his service in Vietnam! The knife-trick scene was originally supposed to be performed by Lance Henriksen alone but he convinced director James Cameron to surprise Bill Paxton by involving him as they shot the scene! Paxton's wide-eyed terror is completely real! Fan favorite Vasquez is played by non-Hispanic Jenette Goldstein! She goes out like a warrior and enables Gorman to reclaim his honor. Ms. Goldstein now is the proprietress of a Los Angeles-based boutique that specializes in bespoke large-size bras! The motto of her company is, "At Jenette's, the alphabet begins with 'D'."! Bishop's programming to not harm humans or allow them to come to harm through inaction is ripped straight from Isaac Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics! Carrie Henn, who played Newt, never acted again but became a schoolteacher. She still maintains a correspondence relationship with Sigourney Weaver thirty-four years later. The late Bill Paxton, who has the distinction of being attacked on screen by an Alien, a Terminator and a Predator, will NEVER be forgotten for his reading of the line, "Why don't you put HER in charge?", referring to little Newt in her oversized helmet. Lol. "ALIEN 3" is a DIVISIVE film but it's an EXCELLENT entry in the series. ABSOLUTELY SEE IT!!! It's directed by David Fincher and features Charles Dance and Charles Dutton. It's brutal, fast-paced, has some extraordinary scares, provides new insight into the creature and concludes the story elegantly. I strongly encourage you NOT TO SKIP IT! Make sure you see the ASSEMBLY CUT (Special Edition with longer runtime). "Alien Resurrection" is the optional one because it's a hot mess except for one cool aquatic sequence. The ambitious prequels, "Prometheus" and "Covenant", mark director Ridley Scott's return to the series but they are mostly good JUST for Michael Fassbender's performances. Scott demystifies the creature and unsatisfyingly attempts to address who the elephant-headed pilot of the derelict spacecraft was. VIEWING ORDER: Alien Aliens (Special Edition) Alien 3 (Assembly Cut) Alien Resurrection (Director's Cut) [OPTIONAL] Predator (1987) Predator 2 Predators Alien vs Predator Alien vs Predator: Requiem (Unrated) Prometheus [OPTIONAL] Covenant [OPTIONAL] INTERNAL CHRONOLOGY: Predator (1987) Predator 2 Alien vs Predator Alien vs Predator: Requiem (Unrated) Predators Predator (2018) [SKIP THIS AWFUL FRANCHISE-KILLING REBOOT] Prometheus [OPTIONAL] Covenant [OPTIONAL] Alien Aliens (Special Edition) Alien 3 (Assembly Cut) Alien Resurrection (Director's Cut) [OPTIONAL]

Which is why Aliens had such great miniatures, sets, and special effects. He's probably the one of the most experienced directors, having worked in different departments for many years, and then using that knowledge to make highly successful big budget films. Many other directors are more specialized, and focus on camera work, while Cameron focuses on the various departments that are needed to make a film.

This is a great movie for the extras, you get more back story of Ripley’s daughter who dies before she Ripley makes it back. Which builds the strong relationship and need for a daughter figure in Newt.

It would add to it, but I can't see it being crucial. Kids are sympathetic characters, girls especially, so simple empathy suffices to create a bond.

In the Director's cut of the movie, a couple scenes that were deleted from the theatrical release were added back to the film. The first important scene is right after Ripley's bad dream and just before the scene where she is brought in front of the board of inquiry for destroying the Nostromo at the end of the first movie. In the deleted scene, Ripley has recovered from hypersleep and she's in the hospital solarium looking out a window at a beautiful forest. As the camera pulls back and Burke enters the room, we realize that Ripley has been looking at a giant high definition display of a forest scene while waiting for Burke. She turns the display off and Burke tries to get her focused on her upcoming testimony in front of the board of inquiry. Ripley's having none of it, she wants to know if Burke has any information about her daughter, who would be an elderly woman by this time, 57 years later... Burke gives her the bad news that her daughter Amanda was killed 6 months prior to Ripley's rescue. Burke shows her a grainy printout photo of an older woman and Ripley breaks down in tears at the loss. Amanda was only 10 years old the last time they were together and Ripley had promised her that she'd be home by her 11th birthday. It is a crime that this scene had to be removed for the theatrical release and such a joy to see it in the Director's Cut. The other deleted scene was interesting but not necessary. It showed the auto-guns in action, deployed by the Marines cutting through an Alien attack in "the tunnels" leading up to the MedLab face-hugger attack scene on Newt and Ripley after Burke betrays them... The movie works without the scene of Ripley finding out about her daughter's death, but with it left in, other storylines take on new meaning. I really enjoyed your thoughts and reaction to my favorite movie of all time. Because you're not busy enough, I'd love to see your reactions to new (new to you anyway) music and songs that you may not have ever heard .... So get on that right away, lol..... Seriously, thanks for having us over for movie night, and much success to you and your channel!

Amusing side story: When I was 20 (1988) and an advisor for my church's senior youth group (high school age), we had a lock in at our church. The kids got to choose movies to rent, and this was one of them. Those of us who were still awake started watching this at around 11 p.m. and I was one of three or four, and the only adult (the other two both being real adults who were used to the early to bed early to rise working life) who stayed up to watch the whole thing. I sent the remaining youth to go to sleep in their sleeping bags while I got ready to do my last task before I settled down: the patrol. Since these were high school kids the obvious concern was that they'd be doing naughty things at a lock-in. So my last task before going to sleep was to systematically and quietly search the building to make sure no one was off doing anything that they shouldn't be. This church was HUGE, say 5,000+ square feet, and the bottom level of it, where the youth room was, was underground. So, here I am, on a solo patrol, with only the dim red lights from the scattered exit signs to guide me, making my way through subterranean windowless passages with cinder block walls and exposed ductwork running along the ceiling, just after watching Aliens. My heartbeat was going like a triphammer as I carefully and cautiously explored each and every room, nook, and potential make-out corner as slowly and quietly as possible so I could surprise any miscreants. All the while with flashbacks of the "lights out" parts of this movie flashing through my mind and a continuous stream of swear words being very quietly mumbled by my mouth. But I did the entire sweep without having a heart attack or a jump scare (which is good because I wasn't wearing brown pants) and made it back to the 'safety' of the youth room where I sat up for the rest of the night because who could sleep in an environment like that? 😀 Good times, good times...

When this movie was about to be released back in the mid-80s, there was so much hype and fanfare, and it certainly didn't disappoint. Siskel and Ebert absolutely raved about this movie, and Sigourney Weaver made the cover of Time Magazine, who proclaimed her performance as groundbreaking due to her portrayal as one of the first truly strong female lead up to that time.

Character's development is crucial, I agree, no plot can work without interesting/likeable/relatable characters. A story is all bout what happen to characters in the first place, If we don't care about them we don't care about the plot. Great reaction, I can relate to your stress, watched this movie in theater when I wasn't even old enough to buy a ticket, total panic, but loved it, one of the more intense memories in theater ever, too bad they can't do this anymore nowadays, 80's and 90's are the best times for movies, IMHO. Brilliant reaction, that was fun. And thanks for not taking any chances with the new camera yet, haha! Having said that, I do have to say that it's downright criminal that no one suggested you watch the special edition/director's cut. Like somebody else said, it adds a lot of very important plot points. The most important of which relate to the loss of Ripley's daughter, which explains why she's so intent on doing everything she can to keep her promise and protect Newt. Additionally, it discusses the alien life cycle, where they discuss that there must be something that they haven't seen before that's "laying all these eggs" -- a queen. These two elements highlight the central theme of the movie, which sometimes gets lost in this theatrical cut -- motherhood. Aliens is the battle between two mothers, each willing to do anything to protect their young. I'm sure you'd appreciate it, given how you immediately picked up on the emotional resonance of the Ripley/ Newt connection. So I started typing this while you were still giving your review, and you just now called this a tale of "two angry moms," haha! You nailed it! Most people don't catch that even after several viewings. You'd definitely like the special edition. Regardless, thanks for the awesome reaction. And good luck with the new camera! 😀

I always have time for an Aliens reaction! I love this movie so much, and I hope you get a chance to watch the special edition, as it does even more to flesh out Ripley's character. I think you'll enjoy that more than moving on to Alien 3, anyway... it often pays to be suspicious of a third franchise instalment 😬... and speaking of which, I'd heartily recommend watching The Terminator and Terminator 2, if you haven't already seen them! Oh, and 15:50 "Ripley in the Batmobile" - your comment is super-appropriate, as the 1989 Tim Burton-directed Batman movie was filmed in part in the same location as the alien hive (Acton Power Station, where the Batman crew was surprised to find the Aliens sets were still standing)... but not only that; in Batman, the Batmobile drives along the exact same place as the APC does in the shot when you made the comment!

The Special Edition version of this movie reveals that Ripley had a daughter who had died not long before she (Ripley) was found. Obviously there is a connection between this and Ripley finding a new daughter in Newt. Their relationship and the movie still work without this and the other deleted scenes, but most fans feel that the Special Edition is a better movie overall, so you might want to watch that to see what you missed. To be clear, according to James Cameron himself, the original theatrical cut is the director's cut because it was the exact cut he approved of himself at the time. However, he also stated that had he had the guts and the clout back then, the Special Edition is the movie he would have made, had he not been under pressure from the studio to shorten its running time. When Cameron cuts a movie down for running time, he typically tries to remove entire ideas and subplots rather than trim a few seconds off of everything, and that's what he did in this case. So the Special Edition is sort of the director's cut, as well: the movie Cameron preferably would have made without time constraints that came from others. But at least the original cut was made by him, not someone else like an editor or executive shaving off minutes without his input. Running time was a bigger deal back in those days.

Madison, this was a real pleasure! I'm so glad you reacted to this amazing sequel and I loved your post-screening comments. As some others have commented here, it's worth checking out the director's cut of this one as well. Not all director's cuts are as good or better than the theatrical cut, but this one is just as good and has some interesting added scenes. Also, as some others have said, you can pretty much ignore the other Alien sequels and prequels. They muddle everything up. Now, please react to THE THING and other John Carpenter movies. Awesome scene! - I was so disappointed that you left out one of the most *awesome* lines in movie history that started-off a fight-scene ... "Get away from her, you bitch!" I mean that set off _major_ cheering in the theater at the time! (Justifiably so!) The cheering started when the door had slid about half-way up and you could tell that the power-suit was coming, but when she came out with that line, the cheers literally made my ears crackle from auditory over-load!
